And make them change all my details to Dr Trillian?

(not Dr Trillian of course, actually Dr Realname, but you know what I mean )

Or is it too unbelievably poncey?

If you send off your PhD certificate to the passport office, they will re-issue your passport with the title 'Dr'. You then use that to change everything else.

There's a fee for the passport. If you're due to renew it soon anyway though it's the best route probably.

It's your title now. Well done.

Don't be too hard on yourself - when my ex got his Dr. he made me call him Dr in bed!

What's the difference between a Dr (non medical ) and being a Professor ?

I'd be Professor Grin

LRDTheFeministDragon · 26/07/2011 18:21

Congratulations Dr Trillian! Smile

I have been wondering (not there yet by a long shot!) about this too - I used to think it was too poncey to be 'Dr' but then realized far too few women use their titles, so I think I will go for it and I'm glad you are.

Avantia - in the UK, a Prof. is a much, much higher-grade academic than a Dr. In the US and some parts of Europe, there's little or no difference.

Avantia · 26/07/2011 18:25

Thanks :)

Well done DrTrillian.

In the UK 'professor' is a job title. You don't have to be a Dr. A Dr is an earned research degree.

Most lecturers, senior lecturers, readers and professors do now have doctorates; but some don't.

A professor in the UK is usually 'Chair' of something, like Chair of Ancient History and Classics. It is a big deal.

In the USA virtually everyone who lectures at a university is known as a 'professor' of some sort, so it it means fuck all really.

Dr for bank/insurances/passport/GP/conferences. Ms for all other correspondence/social dealings etc.

Have benefitted from upgrades on transatlantic flights on a number of occasions when travelling with well-known slightly famous pals or U.S Embassy staff Hmm

Upgraded on recent solo business return flight from States and, as far as can recall, behaved with decorum and grace in face of veritable deluge of alcohol.

Well-spotted activate

Wishful thinking on part of Awre?
