And make them change all my details to Dr Trillian?

(not Dr Trillian of course, actually Dr Realname, but you know what I mean )

Or is it too unbelievably poncey?

enjoyed this thread - just to add my voice to those who say get down the bank and do it! I was down there in a flash with mine - although my dad still writes to me as 'Mrs [DH's first name] [DH's surname]' which gets right up my nose...

Habbibu · 30/07/2009 19:40

God, MN is awash with medievalists! I'm an ex medievalist, and DH is a current one...

You could always have told MIL that her son's was only a courtesy title, jumpjockey...

slng · 30/07/2009 19:51

Only read a few posts, but I got the Mrs DH's-surname nonsense from FIL once too often and told him that my friends call me by my first name and the rest of the world addresses me as Dr my-own-surname. Don't think it made a blind bit of difference to him, but it made me feel better ...

Do it! I did. I worked bloody hard for mine; lots of tears and pain. I use the Dr shamelessly for everything!

Hey look, even my name here! Grin

It helps a lot with things like school, flights etc.

DH is a Prof as well. Wink.

Congratulations by the way.

Sakura · 09/09/2010 01:25

I'd do it! You definitely should.

SeaTrek · 09/09/2010 07:17

If you want to, then do it!

My ex only ever used his 'Dr' title at work and I know he thought it was poncy to use it outside work (maybe because he was a medical doctor?) - I know a lot of his Dr friends were the same, view it [using Dr outside work] as quite old fashioned.

I not 100% sure about my phD friends. I know that one of them will use her title when someone else uses theirs outside work, so I assume that she doesn't use it normally.

Bank may not even need your degree certificate. A Barclays employee just changed his title from Mr to Dr (actually 'Doctor'!) once after a conversation! It was changed back Wink.

LabMonkey · 09/09/2010 07:21

I didn't need to take my certificate and they were happy to update my details.

Regardless of what anyone else thinks you worked hard to obtain your qualification and you are legally entitled to use it.

It definitely makes the banks more helpful once they see the title. I only use it on official stuff and I don't insist people use it (although I suspect if I insisted on being a Miss, Mrs or Ms nobody would think that poncey).

Pheebe · 09/09/2010 07:28

My mum insisted I use it (I kid you not) so its on my personal bank account. Apart from that I only use it for work-related things but have found it very useful on occassion to backfoot people. She's right though, I did work blimmin hard for it, I am an intelligent, emancipated woman and I deserve to use the title...

Annoyingly, people often assume its my husband who's the Dr. I take great pleasure in setting them straight

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies · 09/09/2010 09:21

When I had a UK account and got my doctorate I had to bring them the certificate.

Being able to ponce about with my title was one of the things I was most looking forward to once I'd finished the bloomin thing'!! Grin

Nowadays, the novelty of being a doctor has worn off a bit and I live in a country where nobody uses any kind of titles on official stuff (including Mr or Mrs). Oh well...

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies BSc(hons)Ph.D [ponce emoticon]

TrillianAstra · 09/09/2010 09:23

How bizarre - this thread got reactivated by a completely random post! (it's over a year old!)

BiddyPop · 09/09/2010 09:27

My boss (just moved to another area) has a PhD but almost never uses it. Although, as I had to mind her post for a couple of weeks at the changeover, I noticed that she DOES use it on her bank accounts.

Education mad family though - her DH is a PhD also, and for FUN, she did a Masters in a completely different subject last year.

(I admit it - I am jealous because I worked bl**dy hard to get my Masters, and DH has one too, but he is a failed PhD student and I am only vaguely considering the upheaval taking on one would mean to me). But one day, I will!!

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies · 09/09/2010 09:35

Ooooooh - that IS weird!!

TrillianAstra did you end up changing everything to dr? Has the novelty worn off yet?? Grin

JaneS · 09/09/2010 09:37
TrillianAstra · 09/09/2010 09:39

Bank cards do say Dr now yes :)

ChippingIn · 09/09/2010 09:46

Trill - comletely bloody random post as well, I'd read pages before I realised HUMPH!! So, did you change everything or not?? If you did, how has it been? Been asked to resuscitate anyone yet??

Oops, sorry, didn't see this was a reactivated old thread.

But hope you are enjoying your Drness, Trillian. Smile

drfayray · 09/09/2010 10:02

I also say that I am a real doctor Wink not a medical doctor.

Took me a long time to get here: BA, Masters and then PhD.

ndavy · 09/09/2010 10:14

Do it! Agree with drfayray....lots of blood, sweat and tears so the least you deserve is a bank card with your proper name on it!

I also love the "I'm a real Doctor, not a medical one" too - my SIL is a medical doctor and once dared to say people with PhDs weren't real doctors. Ten minutes later she swiftly retracted. You don't get through a viva without being able to pull someone else to shreads!

Congratualtions by the way!

jenny60 · 09/09/2010 10:16

I always feel poncey using mine and honestly don't care about it much anymore (though was when very excited I got it 12 years ago), but there is no doubt that it is useful. I like the gender neutrality and the way I can say 'actually Dr.' to sexist pigs who make assumptions. But, like some others have said, the sexism doesn't stop. So many students write/refer to me as Miss or Ms or by my first name and the men in my department (mostly my junior colleagues) as Dr or Prof. This really happens all the time. Or, as dh is not a Dr, people take the credit card with my name and title on it to him for payment in restaurants EVEN WHEN I GAVE IT TO THEM. Or ring and ask for Dr Jenny60 and when I say that's me, inexplicably say, or you're Mrs Jenny60 Angry

saintlydamemrsturnip · 09/09/2010 10:21

I'm a Dr. When I get my second one I am going to insist on Dr Dr :o

saintlydamemrsturnip · 09/09/2010 10:23

Oh yes weird about the ssc thread. What is ssc that costs over 3k?

StormyTeapot · 09/09/2010 10:26

Poncey or not, I'd do it! Grin

TrillianAstra · 09/09/2010 10:36

I am real doctor. I have a doctorate.

I get annoyed now when filling in forms and there isn't a box to tick 'Dr'. Grin
