AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 10/09/2009 08:42

Yes, he is, Moomin!

Have you recently moved house?

Stuck on everyone else's, as ever... more clues please!

Pogleswood · 10/09/2009 09:16

Ah,so does that mean you're in the 15th century and your name is Nicholas,Treacle?

...My DIL is american, and probably a gold digger to boot...

Pogleswood · 10/09/2009 09:21

Actually reading my last post I think that still covers a multitude of possibilities!
And more clues all, please, still pondering CJ's kitchen maid, and Moomin's is driving me mad!

Pogleswood · 10/09/2009 09:29

And finally, before I go to the dentist ,your boy's imaginary friend sounds a bit alien to me,Moomin - but it could be worse -you could be under attack from nasty plant things,or creatures from the deep....whew!

llandb · 10/09/2009 10:32

Hello all! Big wave! Been spending far too much time offline and neglecting AIBU books

Dentist, Pogle, most

Off to do lots of catching up....

Poledra · 10/09/2009 13:13

Pogle, is you son overly (indeed obsessively) interested in clocks? Hope the dentist goes OK.

Welcome back!

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/09/2009 17:27

Hooray, Treacle, and very well done indeed, Pogle! Hope you got off lightly at the dentist too.

And welcome back, Llandb!

Still uninspired on CJ's kitchen maid fancier and Pogle's MIL so please spell them out a bit more, you two!

AIBU to think my father's houses are really ugly?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 10/09/2009 18:05

Dentist was fine, not what I'd expected! So I am again.
Hi llandb, nice to see you again!

Pol,are you really asking me about the clocks,or was that intended for Moomin? No particular interest in clocks here..

...my sons are all dead now,but I had vowed never to see my youngest son again, after he told me he planned to marry an American girl...

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/09/2009 19:03

Hmm, are you a FIL rather than a MIL, Pogle, and might your snobbish, flinty old heart be melted by your grandchild's naive assumption that everything you do is for the best?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 10/09/2009 19:30

Yes,absolutely right,Moomin - so now I don't get to describe how he's a fine little chap,in spite of the golden curls and sweet nature, then?
Your father's houses - is he designing them,or living in them?

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/09/2009 19:35

And the lace collar, Pogle! Sorry!

...He's designing them and I am very proud of him, but they are hideous...

OP posts:
Poledra · 10/09/2009 21:42

'Twas indeed to you, Pogle, as I thought you might be the Dowager Duchess of Tintagel from The Buccaneers, but I see I was wrong!

No ideas on the others though.

CJCregg · 10/09/2009 22:09

Evening, all!

I'm no further on anyone's, I'm afraid. Thought I'd got Moomin's, but Pogle beat me to it (assuming it was the Chrysalids?!)

The new kitchen maid hasn't been around for a while and I'm missing her. Mind you, there's plenty to occupy me here, what with all the plans afoot. I wonder why she's so convinced we shouldn't go ahead with them - it's not as if she knows what's going to happen, is it?

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/09/2009 22:25

Chocky, CJ, but the right author so I assume it's a momentary confusion of titles.

I have no blessed idea on this kitchen maid of yours at all - grrr!

...They're made of red brick and the fronts are all flat, and they have horrible sash windows that are too heavy for me to open...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 10/09/2009 22:32

Oops, no, I just got it wrong! At least I got the author, but how embarrassing ...

Utterly stumped on your house designer.

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/09/2009 23:36

Oh, CJ, I know, I think we've all found there's nothing like this thread for highlighting deficiencies in one's reading/memory.

I suspect your kitchen maid is one of mine. Can you tell us anything about your plans?

...But my brother likes them. He wants to be an architect too...

OP posts:
llandb · 11/09/2009 10:12

CJ, would your kitchen maid be up for using an alias, at all at all?

And now, llandb, who has been terribly remiss on the AIBU Books front, has realised that her plans for a host of pirate-themed books on Talk Like A Pirate Day (19 Sep) have been derailed by an imminent aunt visit!

So, Avast 'n' Shiver me Timbers, it's time to start!

Disclaimers:

Llandb knows pitifully few pirate books so it will be a short list;

She will be forced to cheat slightly in the genre department;

She has never, ever seen any Pirates of the Caribbean despite thinking 'dishy' would not be out of place

and she would be most grateful if more pirate-savvy others added their own

So, to start (just before heading off for a day of land-lubbin')

Arrr IBU to wish I'd had more birthday parties?

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/09/2009 11:59

Morning, all!

Llandb, you do have more aunties than Bertie Wooster.

SO, umm, shiver my timbers and other piratical expressions, was the shortage of birthday parties due to the shortage of birthdays?

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 11/09/2009 16:55

ahoy me hearties!

moomin, does your architect visit holland and see a family living in a house alongside their cow?

llandb, did your family not mix with other people much?

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/09/2009 18:18

Yoho ahoy!

...We've never been to Holland, Polly, but we're going to stay in the country for my father's next commission so I expect I'll see a lot of cows there...

OP posts:
llandb · 11/09/2009 21:39

Avast, me hearties!

Arrr, yes, indeed, Moomin' there is a shortage of birthdays - well, 29 Feb ones. None of this namby-pamby getting 28 Feb and 1 March to make do!

(So many aunts that I have lost count, but some repeat! I should be grateful that they haven't run away to become pirate wenches.)

Polly, I'm ashamed to say that I'm not sure. Well I suppose my family of origin may have done but my co-pirates rather stick to the high seas, and as for my beloved, well, I suppose daughters of modern majors-general who live in Penzance don't get out much. So, I suppose, yes!

And now, AIBU to be handy with a needle?

Clues, please! (Begs)

And, 'night, all!

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/09/2009 22:16

Oh, I don't know Llandb, I like the sound of pirate aunties and if they were sailing the seven seas they wouldn't be visiting quite so often.

If your unusual competence with a needle means you get landed with the job of sewing other people's uniforms then it isn't you BU but your shipmates.

...I love it in the country but I can't believe my father and his client are planning to pull down the old hall. It's beautiful...

Time to shiver my timbers off to the neglected washing-up!

OP posts:
CJCregg · 12/09/2009 09:29

Down, down, down the dark, dark street they came ... stealing the front of houses, ooohhh arrrgggggghhh ...

(That's the limit of my pirate knowledge, I'm afraid!)

This kitchen maid is proving a bit tedious, sorry. She's telling me we shouldn't go ahead with the plot, as if she knows something - but how can we abandon the Queen?

No idea on anyone else's, BAH.

Off to get some pieces of eight.

MoominMymbleandMy · 12/09/2009 09:43

Ah, CJ, is it possible your kitchen maid's knowledge is the result of a spot of time travelling?

...My father's commission is delayed. He's going back to London but he's said my brother and I can stay in the country while he's away...

OP posts:
llandb · 12/09/2009 18:14

Ah, Moomin' and CJ, ye've lobbed me in the broadside for I know neither of the ones ye've mentioned. Me piratical knowledge be sunk! May I rogueishly beg that ye do these as AIBUs next?

As for sewing, it's not so much uniforms as shadows that I'm good at attaching.... (unless me knowledge be so pitiful that 'tis the same wench sewin' both!)

No idea about the others
