AIBU Books Game Part 4

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/07/2009 19:54

Well, we made it to a fourth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to refuse to read aloud?

Pogle, I'm not much further with yours although it's ringing faint bells, so I'm wondering what type of trickery you have in mind?

Moomin, has your niece suffered some sort of trauma? (BTW, you are as ever uncannily spot on about my brain lapse - have been having far too much fun and distraction in RL)

I am a cat. My mistress complains that she's bored all the time, but if all her stories are true then I think she's got plenty to keep her occupied.

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 10:34

I seem to be being very slow this morning, still puzzled by everyone else's...

...I sometimes wish I could tell my new family about him, but I don't think they'd understand. They'd just think he was a monster...

MoominMymbleandMy · 25/08/2009 11:06

Morning all!

Treacle, does your offspring have an exclusive residence approached by a very unusual entrance?

And, Ms Cregg the Frivolous, my earlier observation about cats' descriptions of their owners still applies, but is your tame lunatic called Miss Amity.

Pogle, you sound a bit like a Wodehouse character.

More clues, please, everyone!

...But it isn't surprising she's so unlike other children because her upbringing was very old-fashioned...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 11:41

Um... I don't think so, Moomin. Although my memory of this book is slightly hazy!

...And I could never make the journey all the way back to see him. I'm dead to that adopted family now...

Poledra · 25/08/2009 11:44

Treacle, have you been cast out from your adopted tribe for behaviour inappropriate to a woman? [stab-in-the-dark emoticon]

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 12:08

Yes, Poledra, but at least I have a hunky man and variety of animals to console me now!

Poledra · 25/08/2009 12:16

I am still ridiculously excited when I get one of these right

Pogleswood · 25/08/2009 13:26

Small pleasures,Poledra!
I'm sure I ought to recognise Moomin's...

Well,my character isn't in the garden saying "Tea,capital,capital...tea!" No,not even remotely a Wodehouse character!
And it isn't exactly trickery I had in mind..perhaps manipulation would be a better word..

...He's giving this person marital advice - I think it's time to get involved myself...

MoominMymbleandMy · 25/08/2009 13:34

OK, my wild stabs in the dark were way off the mark there.

So what was your one, Treacle?

I think you would have loved mine, Pogle, so it's just a case of whether you came across it when you were younger and had time to read your head off.

...Her parents died and she was brought up by an elderly great-aunt who was kind but set in her ways...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 25/08/2009 13:44

If I'd known when I was younger that one day this thread would exist I'd have read much more widely!

...I am going to chip in with my own advice,to the wife...

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 15:02

I was Ayla, from the Clan of the Cave Bear series.

Still stuck... more clues please Moomin and Pogle!

AIBU to have two husbands?

CJCregg · 25/08/2009 15:42

I like the sound of yours, too, Moomin. No closer to getting it, though.

My owner isn't Miss Amity. She's a young girl with a very vivid imagination - possibly something to do with the mushroom she keeps eating?

Poledra · 25/08/2009 15:54

Ah, CJ, finally got you - your mistress needs to stay away from those White Rabbits

Cannot do an AIBU at the moment as I am reading Jamaica Inn after someone else did it (CJ, I think?). Had read and loved Rebecca but hadn't ventured near any of Du Maurier's other books (no, I don't know why!).

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 16:00

Ooh, try Frenchman's Creek next, that's my favourite Du Maurier - soo romantic!

MoominMymbleandMy · 25/08/2009 16:04

Oh, CJ, then you must be Dinah!

at Jamaica Inn, Pol.

Yes, CJ, I think my one would have been right up your street too.

...And her aunt taught her at home so she she really isn't used to other children. Our three are doing their best but she seems to want to stay out of their way...

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 25/08/2009 16:12

Oh, and thank you for clearing up your last one, Treacle. I've never read any of them. Should I?

And are the two husbands at the same time, which does sound a but U?

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 25/08/2009 16:12

...a bit U...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 25/08/2009 16:41

I think they're all a good, enjoyable read, although quite trashy - apparently the historical stuff is bang on, Jean Auel does a lot of research into the period. They are quite soft-porny in parts - don't know whether that's a bonus or not but I was GLUED to them when I was about 13

...Do I have two husbands at the same time? Well, there's a question. I'm a bit confused about that myself...

Poledra · 25/08/2009 16:45

Yes, Treacle, I remember avidly reading the sex bits too, though I was probably about 15. [late developer emoticon]

pollywobbledoodle · 25/08/2009 18:26

ooh a bit of soft porn...might read some to liven up the next camping weekend!

treacle have you discovered an earlier betrothal that you didn't know about?

steamedtreaclesponge · 26/08/2009 11:10

...No, Polly, I did know about both of them - but I didn't have much choice in marrying the second, the alternative would have been extremely unpleasant...

pollywobbledoodle · 26/08/2009 12:33

treacle, would you have been beheaded?

steamedtreaclesponge · 26/08/2009 12:54

...Not beheaded, no, but doubtless some torture or rape would have come into it. My former life seems very far away now...

pollywobbledoodle · 26/08/2009 19:13

have you been forced to marry bluebeard?

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/08/2009 23:13

Evening, all!

Still thoroughly stumped but your new one sounds pretty racy too, Treacle!

More clues all please, and in the meantime I'll plough on with mine.

...I was right. She was being haunted but not by her dear, old great-aunt. Instead, it was a thoroughly nasty minx who lived in our house a hundred years ago...
