Really angry that the postman delivered a BNP election leaflet this morning

He handed it to us with the rest of our post (included a parcel so he rang the bell). Why is this racist cr*p allowed to be delivered with the post? Obviousy they're too spineless to put their hatred through people's letterboxes themselves. Am thinking of complaining to the post office.

Anoys me too. Our postie delivered one along with the info leaflet for swine flu!

mummyhill · 14/05/2009 19:08

Sorry meant to say yanbu

SoupDragon · 14/05/2009 19:09

It's the postman's job to deliver it (and other non-addressed junk mail) unless you have opted out of the "at home" service (I think that's what it's called).

So it's probably your fault .

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:11

Aren't they entitled to one leaflet per election each (per party) or soemthing like that? As per election TV broadcasts

YANBU to loathe the leaflet but YABU to wish to deny them free speech, even if that free speech comes across to most educated people as 'I'm-a-bigot-hate-me'

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:12

Oh I find a handy trick with these things is to leave them in reach of a toddler

onagar · 14/05/2009 19:12

Because they are a political party like any other. I understand why you don't want them, but you can't expect the postman to sort through them according to your preferences.

How do feel about getting leaflets from the parties that have just been shown to be made up from thieves and swindlers?

southeastastra · 14/05/2009 19:13

i saw a huge bnp advertising lorry on the m25 earlier!

they must be upping their campaign

nametaken · 14/05/2009 19:13

YABU - we live in a democracy, it you don't like the BNP don't vote for them. They still have a right to exist and send out promotional literature.

It's my guess the literature was pretty tame anyway without any racist remarks.

MissM · 14/05/2009 19:13

I know they're entitled to their one leaflet etc etc but that doesn't make me feel any better! SoupDragon ha bloody ha . Peachy I hear what you're saying but I have such a problem with that 'entitled to free speech' stuff. I don't even want their filth in the house.

Poor postie really - imagine it being your job to post that.

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:13

We got one yesterday.

I find them appalling and abhorent.

They are anti-democratic and as such I do no think they deserve a voice.

Not the postie's fault though.

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:14

Onager I think you mean represented by thieves and swindlers

Most party members are bog standard average people no doubt immensely pissed off by the moat briagde

onagar · 14/05/2009 19:15

Peachy, oops, so I do!

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 19:16

You dont agree with their views, but at least they are a political party and not a terrorist organisation. I would never vote Sinn Fein in a month of blue moon sundays with pigs flying overhead, but when they come to the door with suits and leaflets not bombs and balaclavas like their grandfathers, then I'll smile back blandly and then stuff their leaflets in recycling.

Sorry, bit of a tangent there.

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:17

nametaken - "without any racist comments"

Only if you are totally unable to detect any subtext!

I particularly object to them using the battles in their defence. PEOPLE FOUGHT AGAINST FASCISM AND DISCRIMINATION IN THOSE WARS FFS.

Bigotted fuckers.

MissM · 14/05/2009 19:18

Actually I would argue that the leaflet did contain racist overtones (yes, I did read it because I hate their claims that they are not racist). I think that 'ensure that British soldiers are not abused on the streets of our cities by Muslims' and 'Oppose the dangerous drive ... to give 80 million low-wage, Muslim Turks the right to swamp Britain'.

I don't blame the postie, and obviously I'm not going to vote for them. I'm still peed off that they are allowed to get away with 'respectability'.

OP posts:
Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:18

LOL

I hear you guys about abhorrent and I'd certainly keep that shite rom my boys once old enough to read, but.... if you sdtart to deny them access to the same freedoms you will strengthen their campaign

The trick is to make it clear what they really are. And of course to make sure you vote for someone who is not in any way assocaited with them (instead of doing the incredibly annoying 'i'm angry so wont' vote thing)

MissM · 14/05/2009 19:19

Just re-read my post and realise I didn't finish my sentence. Basically I think the quotes I gave are racist.

OP posts:
YanknCock · 14/05/2009 19:19

I got one too, didn't realise it came with the post!

It wasn't tame (I didn't think) and it did include racist remarks.

Just one more reminder to vote for the Greens if you live in the Northwest---apparently they stand the best chance of blocking the BNP from getting in.

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:20

Isn't there someone you can complain to if it is racist? Inciting racial hatred etc?

hvaen't had ours yet so cant comment on this pile of drival leaflet

tribpot · 14/05/2009 19:20

They're not anti-democratic in the sense that they wish to influence change through the democratic process. If what they publish is openly racist it can be challenged but they are more calculating than this.

Unfortunately like so much rhetoric the only option is to throw it away. They have the right to voice their opinion. Their opinion is, in my opinion, a load of arse. Poor postie can't do anything about it, he has a job to do.

On a positive note, the BNP must be mad as hell that the USA has a president "of color [deliberate spelling in case Michelle Obama is reading]". Suck that one up toss features

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:21

But the problem is there are lots of people round here (and place like it) who are living in borderline poverty and believe in the BNP as a political force! They are scapegoating. They do not think they are racists and they are forgetting that most of us need only go back a few generations to find an immigrant.

Seriously, the BNP are dangerous. If you cannot see this I can only assume you live in a non-working class area.

meemar · 14/05/2009 19:21

I think it's actually more worrying that the literature was 'tame without any racist remarks' because it lets people believe that they are actually harmless and just sticking up for ordinary Britons.

They are too spineless to spout off on their leaflets the crap they really believe, because it would put people off voting for them.

MissM · 14/05/2009 19:23

Well I do wonder. I've seen their rubbish in the London elections and they were very very careful in their wording. But this I think is blatant - Muslims are explicitly mentioned in a negative way twice. This is racist. What evidence do they have that Muslims are abusing soldiers and wanting to swamp Britain?

OP posts:
MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 19:24

Absolutely Peachy and Tribpot. Let them deliver their poison in the form of a leaflet.

Deny them the opportunity to hand out leaflets who knows what their next plan would be?

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 19:25

btw, freedom of speech, is that an american idea, the right to question the government?

In Britain, it could still be regarded as incitement to racial hatred.

I think. Armchair observer here.
