Really angry that the postman delivered a BNP election leaflet this morning

He handed it to us with the rest of our post (included a parcel so he rang the bell). Why is this racist cr*p allowed to be delivered with the post? Obviousy they're too spineless to put their hatred through people's letterboxes themselves. Am thinking of complaining to the post office.

Who are you addressing Nicky? I don't think the BNP are harmless at all. Far from it. That's one of the reasons why I find it so objectionable that they are allowed to legally deliver this cr*p. They allege to be something they're not to win genuine votes and play on people's fears. I don't think that's not dangerous at all.

'Seriously, the BNP are dangerous. If you cannot see this I can only assume you live in a non-working class area. ' was that me or nametaken Nicky?

I live in a mixed area but until 30 lived in a very WC town (bridgwater). I can see that but still feel that freedom of speech within the law is an important thing, I am grateful that we have those laws but seriosuly doubt that many peopleuse them or complain where they could do so.

I think the BNP are very clever in their evil, rank and shitey ways sadl;y as yes many people do seem to misunderstand what they are actually saying, a lot of double meanings and thinly glossed over bullshit. But if you ban it you strengthen them and their claim to be increasingly marginalised. You might even horribly risk creating some kind of folk heroes from their ranks which could be disastrous

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:28

MissM, I am not addressing anyone on here - just ranting!

I've been fuming about it since the leaflet arrived yesterday and now the flood gates have opened.

One of the reasons I love mn is because it is entirely devoid of bigots!

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 19:30

hhmmmm! not sure nickytwotimes, I've been shocked a few times!!

Makeda · 14/05/2009 19:30

While I disagree with the BNP and loathe everything they stand for, I do think we have to be careful with censorship because it can often draw more attention to the abhorrent views (see Michael Savage episode - I'd never heard of him before, now know lots about his opinions).

I have a nasty feeling that the BNP will do well in the elections to come, but hopefully will be a wake-up call for the non-voters (like the Le Pen thing in France).

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:30

Oh no Nicky its not

keep this thread bumpe they'll be along sooner or later, once they've had a glass of wine to get the nerve up anyway

BillSilverFoxBuchanan · 14/05/2009 19:31

Our postman was nice enough to just litter the floor with them as opposed to putting them into the letterboxes.

I've still not had a swine flu leaflet though

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:32

No, really, I am ranting.

I hear people describing them as a joke (in RL) and it worries me. They are not a joke - they are a threat.

YanknCock · 14/05/2009 19:33

I'm still trying to decide if this glossy thing delivered by the post office is more offensive to me than the hand-delivered BNP crap I got while living in London.

Then, I was quite worried because I was an immigrant married to a black man, and none of our neighbours seemed to have gotten the very explicitly racist crap. I was scared we were being targeted, and was sickened that these people had been on my doorstep.

But also hate the idea they can pay Royal Mail to distribute this nonsense.

tribpot · 14/05/2009 19:33

Gosh between the Human Rights Act and the Magna Carta I'm not sure what specific laws govern our right to freedom of speech and the ability (if not requirement) to challenge our government. Clearly we do have those rights and should.

I had thought that the BNP would stop short of incitement to racial hatred although that - to me - fundamentally is their SOP. But what MissM quotes is way beyond what I think they can get away with.

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 14/05/2009 19:33

THey probably will do well at the next election, some people will believe their claims to only care about the poor working man etc etc, and to have left racism firmly behind them. They've just got wise that's all.

I have SEEN it with my own eyes in Ireland. Sorry to draw parallel with Sinn Fein again, but they have really done some RE-Branding in the last few years. They have stopped going on about the 32 counties blah blah, now they go on about the plight of the working man and so on and so on (all fair enough), but a LOT of people have swallowed their rebranding hook line and sinker. A lof of people are thick and shouldn't have a vote.

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:34

Oh God, really Peachy?

I will hide this thread then.
I do not need my bp any higher tonight.

Tinker · 14/05/2009 19:35

I'm guessing the BNP will say that Muslims are not a race therefore they can make those statements and not be racist.

I did hear Nicky Campbell interview Nick Griffin the other day. Didn't hear it all but pretty good interview frorm what I heard. Good by Campbell, I hasten to add.

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:35

Oh but they dont think they're bigots of course

they say things like

I'm not racist but it is true that in some places in the UK you can't get a council house / job / benefits form / hospital appointment unless you are an asylum seeker / muslim / illegal immigrant

They can spotted in particular by their inability to distinguish between illegal immigrant, EU citizen and asylum seeker, constant reference to others in the form of 'as we all know / anyone with sense knows.....' and their constant call for the Government to release figures of illegals in the country (erm excuse me? how would we do that then? when they're, like, illegal and all?)

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:35

Yes, MsMaggie, the rebranding has been worryingly successful.

I will hide this thread soon, honest.

cockneydadtobe · 14/05/2009 19:36

Sadly, the BNP (which to me are Nazi's by any other name) have the right to advertise / campaign as long a they don't break the law regarding incitement of racial hatred or such like in their material. YANBU to be disgusted by their policies. I suppose that their campaigning is just something we have to put up with and it illustrates the importance to use your vote as best as possible even if the alternatives are not always ideal. Just my t'uppenies worth.

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:37

I know the type sadly, Peachy.

They are perhaps thinner on the ground here than in RL. Certainly a lot of the i'm-not-racist,but types round where I live.

DM readers.

Peachy · 14/05/2009 19:37

I'd be pissed off though if I were a postie, dont think I could justify delivering them in any way but equally one has to eat

Puts them in a horrid position

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:38

..or should I say, DM believers.

Lilymaid · 14/05/2009 19:38

I saw the BNP party political broadcast last night - made me feel uneasy, but it is the price of a democratic society.

Worldsworstmummy · 14/05/2009 19:40

YABU. They are entitled to use to the postal service to deliver their leaflets.

All grist to the mill. The more people see how objectionable their ideas are the more people reject them.

Tinker · 14/05/2009 19:41

I watched it as well. Half of me thinking these people can barely string a sentence together and the other half thinking that 2 of the candidates didn't look like 'MPs'. Deliberately or accidentally clever, I'm not sure but can see how some people could be thinking "they seem like "

nickytwotimes · 14/05/2009 19:42

But worldsworstmummy, they don't reject them! Lots of people fall for their shit. I see it every day.

LackaDAISYcal · 14/05/2009 19:43

YABU it is hardly the postman's fault.

...and unfortunately (or really that should be fortunately) due to the democratic process in this country their election campaign material has as much right as anyone else's to be distributed, no matter how distasteful it is or whether you like it or not.

I live not too far from BNP supporter central in the N of England and it's quite scary how popular they are around those parts.

We haven't had anything from them yet though, but it'll go straight in the recycling when it arrives.

cockneydadtobe · 14/05/2009 19:43

Having just read said leaflet in detail (thanks missus for digging it out), I think the comments would possibly be deemed (at least by those of a certain intelligence) as possibly being either racist or capable of incitement of racial hatred. Now I'm wondering who to complain to.... not impressed.
