Really angry that the postman delivered a BNP election leaflet this morning

He handed it to us with the rest of our post (included a parcel so he rang the bell). Why is this racist cr*p allowed to be delivered with the post? Obviousy they're too spineless to put their hatred through people's letterboxes themselves. Am thinking of complaining to the post office.

We got one today too - or at least I think it was today. It may have been there weeks without me noticing and visitors probably think we are supporters. Unbelievable.

surrofab · 14/05/2009 21:13

YABU.
I read the leaflet the postie bought me this morning, agreed with a lot of their points did not think them crazed racists and have a feeling they will win a lot of votes. They almost certainly have a great deal of our local votes.

missyhissey · 14/05/2009 21:17

which points did you agree with surro?

LobstersLass · 14/05/2009 21:18

YABU. It's called freedom of speech and part of living in a democracy.

I agree with you that their message is vile, but I'd rather put up with the odd flyer than have no freedom of speech in this country.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 14/05/2009 21:24

Racial hatred is not a valid part of democracy so yanbu.

duchesse · 14/05/2009 21:26

Are doctors even allowed to be registered BNP suporters? Teachers, police officers and civil servants aren't afaik.

duchesse · 14/05/2009 21:31

I suppose the postmen in question could "deliver" the leaflets straight to the nearest rubbish bin as they start their rounds. Thank god for honest to goodness working people willing to stand up to their management and NOT do what they are told ("We were only obeying orders", anyone?). I would love to see this one stand up to the scrutiny of the law. I bet the management can't force their staff to aid and abet racial hatred... which is a crime in itself.

EvilRustyBear · 14/05/2009 21:33

I remember the first time the BNP/NF/whatever they were calling themselves at the time had a party political broadcast on TV - they had a cosy litle family scene, with a small child reading a picture book.

The picture book was 'Mog the forgetful cat' by Judith Kerr, who fled with her family from Nazi Germany in the 30's.

I often wondered what she thought of that one....

wannaBe · 14/05/2009 21:34

"Yes but does free speech mean you are allowed to talk bull?" Well talking bull isn't reserved only for the bnp.

I personally believe that it is actually a good thing to find out about the policies of these parties so you can be informed about who you are, and aren't, actually voting for, iyswim.

I despise everything the bnp stands for, but these leaflets do seem to generate discussions on places like this, which does reiterate the fact that the majority do not agree with their policies either..

HolyGuacamole · 14/05/2009 21:37

HERE is a pic of the blurb from the back of the BNP leaflet with the doctor

HolyGuacamole · 14/05/2009 21:40

Oh I should have posted THIS which goes on to explain about the people in the photos...from stock apparently.

solidgoldSneezeLikeApig · 14/05/2009 21:59

Now that would be an interesting thing HG: just supposing that one of the models in one of the stock shots saw the leaflet and kicked up a great big fuss about his/her image being used to represent views that s/he doesn't hold at al.
Unfortunately it's not that likely as (according to that blog) the pics are from US stock... but it would be entertaining if they'd been dumb enough to use a UK picture, wouldn't it?

I do think though that a belief in free speech means accepting the right of other people to talk absolute shite.

mariemarie · 14/05/2009 22:04

We have an asian family living next door to us. Our postman lives a few doors down. He told us this morning that he is going to have the BNP leaflets in his post tomorrow.

He also said that although it is his job to deliver them (irrelevant of his views), he felt totally embarrassed putting one through my neighbours door and was not going to do it.

Please have some sympathy with the postmen, they have a terrible job to do and I have no doubt that many of them will bear the brunt of many peoples anger over this.

WinkyWinkola · 14/05/2009 22:13

"Well talking bull isn't reserved only for the bnp." Too true Wannabe.

HolyGuacamole · 14/05/2009 22:20

Oh yes solid, that would be most amusing! I see on the blog, it says the pics are royalty free as well, tightwads as well as thinly veiled racist scumbags...grr!

KayHarkerDoesNotSimper · 14/05/2009 22:23

Well, I reluctantly concede that they are allowed to spout whatever shite they want to within the law.

Because I do appreciate the associated freedom I have to say that they are bunch of fuckwitted hate-mongering fascists and anyone who votes for them can look forward to my unending contempt.

Makeda · 14/05/2009 22:30

Is it legal for them to have those photos with those opinions suggesting that those are real people (as opposed stock photographs - of course they exist as human beings!)? Is that allowed (I don't really know anything about this sort of thing?)

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 14/05/2009 22:34

should be illegal

Ronaldinhio · 14/05/2009 22:40

shurely not...
complaining at the post office...
where would one find one?

wobbegong · 14/05/2009 22:55

I support a no-platform policy for fascists and those inciting racial hatred. When I wrote to the BBC to say how disgusted I was to see them using the license fee to broadcast fascist propaganda, I got back this frankly very limp response. It came very fast so they obviously had it all prepared and read to go.

"The BBC and other relevant broadcasters transmit Party Election Broadcasts for registered political parties which qualify according to agreed criteria and by law are scrutinised by the Electoral Commission. Qualification normally depends on a party standing a minimum number of candidates in the election.

The editorial content of the broadcasts is a matter for individual political parties, though it must comply with the law and broadcasting regulations. The BBC's obligation to be impartial means that it does not take any stance on the views expressed within Party Election Broadcasts, nor could it choose not to broadcast a PEB by a lawful and registered party."

There is a difference between being impartial and inciting racial hatred, however they want to dress it up. Congratulations to the postmen, and shame on everyone involved at the BBC, from the continuity announcer upwards.

solidgoldSneezeLikeApig · 15/05/2009 01:08

Wobegong: Well I don't support the 'no-platform-for-fascists' position because I think that everyone has the right to express their opinions, however unpleasant, within the law. And unless the Government chooses to declare the BNP a prohibited organisation, then they do have the same rights to put out election propaganda as every other party.
I support other people's rights to disagree with their propaganda and politial position, of course, but only in the same way (ie through leaflets, speeches, adverts etc) not by destroying their material or beating them up.

GothAnneGeddes · 15/05/2009 01:36

I also support a No Platform policy.

They do incite hatred and having been on the receiving end of it, it is pretty scary.

The more popular the BNP get, the worse life gets for ethnic minorities and Muslims.

I was absolutely disgusted when I received my leaflet this morning. About 99% of our area is non white, we shouldn't be subjected to such vileness.

As far as I'm concerned, these people would kick my husband out of the country, think my daughter is an abomination and I'm a race (and religious traitor).

Unlike any other U.K party, their policies would have a devastating impact on a large proportion of the population.

They are too dangerous and horrible for public consumption.

Btw, I rang my local constituency and then contacted my local branch of the TUC 'Hope Not Hate' group to complain.

YANBU

SomeGuy · 15/05/2009 02:37

The BNP are not doing anything illegal, that's the point.

Lots of their supporters are violent thugs, but then lots of MPs are also crooks it seems.

As for the leaflet:

www.thestraightchoice.org/full.php?q=52#l69

'because it's not racist to oppose mass immigration' - this was basically the Tories 2005 election slogan:

www.amren.com/ar/2005/06/TORYIM1sml.JPG

British Jobs for British Workers - a concept espoused by Gordon Brown

The rest of it is basically Daily Mail rhetoric.

It's disgusting that people want to ban them on the basis that 'well, er, they aren't actually saying anything illegal, but they WANT to, honest, just LOOK at them'. Illiberal nonsense.

This one is slightly more offensive

www.thestraightchoice.org/full.php?q=80#l135

but again, foreigners 'swamping' Britain is straight out of the Daily Mail www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-479474/East-European-immigrants-cancer-swamp-NHS.html

a photo that could be in the BNP leaflet:
www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/columnists/article-489557/Britain-scarcely-recognisable-50-years-immigrat ion-deluge-continues.html

GothAnneGeddes · 15/05/2009 03:29

Right, I'm going to break it down, at the risk of getting flamed.

If you are white British, not Muslim, not Jewish, not any other minority group, then I think it's a bit rich talking about freedom of speech.

It's not you they're getting at, is it?

It's not you they're threatening, it's not you who they think is subhuman.

Increased BNP voting = an increase in racial and religious hate attacks.

People have the right to live in peace more then anyone has the right to spew hatred.

Phoenix4725 · 15/05/2009 08:05

we had ours through the door and I allowed myolderds to look at it and bfore flamed i totally disagree with their pov bu,t wanted to be open with my dc and it led into quite a open conversation about it bearing in mine another few years there be old enough to vote
