Agree wih EachPeach, the whole idea makes my toes curl. dh and I wanted a marriage, not a wedding, we pitched up at the registry office, booked the next available date and got married 4 weeks later with a handful of close family in attendance. I wore black.

My Dad still tells me I'll regret not doing it 'properly'.

belgo · 06/05/2009 07:05

When I was a child I did dream of being a bride and having a dream wedding.

But when I actually got married, no way did I want to pay and orgnanise a huge ridiculous wedding.

I did get my dream wedding in the end - red wedding dress, 10 guests.

Umlellala · 06/05/2009 07:08

No, I have never dreamed of being a bride and the whole wedding day thing. Had a great wedding day though (and got to wear a great dress... though might now renew vows at some point so I can do the big meringue thing... slightly envious now, not sure why )

IrritableGrizzly · 06/05/2009 07:33

PinkTulips That's what we did! Hated the idea of spending so much money on one day, hated the idea of worrying if everyone else was enjoying it, if some obscure aunt was annoyed over her placement, all that bollocks.

So, dh and I had three weeks in Mauritius, just us. We got married ten days into the holiday, had two of the hotel employees as witnesses, got the photos done and then carried on with the holiday and had the best time in the world.

kitbit · 06/05/2009 07:40

I have to confess I was never a girly girl and didn't dream about the big white fairy wedding. However, even though I had already chosen my dress (red satin jessica rabbit style ) my friends took me out for some lunchtime cocktails pre-wedding and we ended up in a wedding shop. I put on the biggest meringue they could find (keeping straight faces) and....oh dear. It was fab. It made my waist look tiny and my legs look long. The cut of the bodice made my neck look long and graceful and it swished.

So for about 30 mins I was all caught up in the floofiness of it all and I can see how someone might want to look like a fairy princess for a day even though I was convinced I didn't!!!!

(I got my own back - my red headed friend was made to try a fuschia voile number and my very tomboyish blonde friend was made to try on all the tiaras - heehee)

oh...and before anyone gets cross that we wasted the sales assistant's time she knew we had no intention of buying cos we owned up before we started but she said it was a slow day so we were welcome to come in and try on

TrillianAstra · 06/05/2009 08:16

I do want a nice wedding (not sure of details) and wherever it is I definitely want a dress, but I do not want to be a princess.

at the whole princess thing. I had to have harsh words with a friend at a university ball for saying that we were like princesses in our pretty dresses. What are you, eight?

NervousNutty · 06/05/2009 08:19

I would love a big wedding and to be like a princess.

It won't ever happen though as my parents don't speak to each other and having them in the same room together would stress me out too much. So i'd have to elope.

Oh and i'm single which is a bit of a barrier too lol.

Morloth · 06/05/2009 08:23

We were a bit "gothy" so black featured heavily.

SummatAnNowt · 06/05/2009 08:26

I had the wedding my mil wanted, which made us both happy, I didn't have to give a crap and she got to arrange the wedding she thought she never would because she didn't have a daughter.

Besides, we'd already been legally married 3 months earlier in the county courthouse by a judge on his lunch break, with just two witnesses.

The reason for this is I wanted to get the immigration paperwork out of the way.

i have never wanted to be married or be Mrs.
find idea of frou-frou weddings and all the accompanying parp reallly schmaltzy

WowOoo · 06/05/2009 08:45

MrsBlanc -I bloody didn't dream about it for years or want to be a princess either.

But I did have a lovely day and enjoyed the party.

Ours was slightly alternative and everyone said it was much more relaxed and nice to go to a wedding that was a bit different.

halia · 06/05/2009 08:48

I had a big white dress in the end, possibly because I was the 'tomboy - you'll never be pretty' one when I was a kid and felt the need to make up for it. Actually I'm a full on OTT romantic but my taste runs to country romance so I had a full skirted cream wedding dress, veil, garden roses and rosemary to carry, homemade fruit cake and 16 people attending!
DH wore a cream linen suit, pink tie and handmade OTT gold embrodered waistcoat.

We drank copiuos amounts of bubbly, real ale and whisky; played rockabiliy and irish jigs on someones boombox and let off fireworks when it got dark.

Big party YES
great dress/outfit YES
feeling happy and a bit teary YES

frou frou -hopefully not
stressful - only when we got caught in a thunderstorm on our way up the day before with our cat suffering severe travel sickness in the back of the car ;)

mrsblanc · 06/05/2009 08:51

I hope noone thinks I am knocking big fat I am the princess white weddings .

I am knocking the idea we all want one. Or any variant. Or to be a bride of even to get married.

My dh's ex used to carry a bit of material about in her handbag that was for her dream wedding dress wtf! Apparently she was a bit like Monica in friends with a wedding book that she had since she was a teenager!

Cicatrice · 06/05/2009 08:53

I didn't want to be a princess. Didn't even try a meringue dress on. I had a nice small wedding though not as small as I would have liked.(30+)

And I never dreamed of a big wedding.

scottishmummy · 06/05/2009 08:54

i have also been to wonderful weddings awash with white and organza

just me.dont fancy the whole bride thang

too stingy.too pragmatic i think that is dishwasher money, building works money etc

smeg products and poggenpohl kitchen excite me much more

alicecrail · 06/05/2009 08:59

scottishmummy we actually made more money out of our wedding than we put in!! Fil payed for our conservatory for our present and people gave us vouchers and cheques (we didn't ask for anyhing) which totalled more than the wedding cost!Fabulous investment

scottishmummy · 06/05/2009 09:01

well aye that is canny
i'm still more animated about redecoration than nuptials though

Meglet · 06/05/2009 09:14

mrsblanc I saw that programme last night and I can think of nothing worse than having a big white wedding. The expense, hassle and stress just don't seem worth it. I have no desire to dress up like a princess. And I would faint with terror at walking down the aisle. And as much as I love my very wonderful father (he is taking ds to nursery even as I type) I am not an object to be given away.

However if I could afford a christian lacroix couture wedding dress I might change my mind .

We got married in a reg office and had some bubbly afterwards with our parents and siblings. It was great.

I've never dreamed of blowing huge amounts of money on an identikit 'special day'. The very thought brings me out in a cold sweat.

notsoclever · 06/05/2009 09:24

We are getting married later this year - just the 2 of us and dds as witnesses. Various family things have made us feel that we want to be married. We have been thinking about it for a while and have been waiting until dd2 was old enough to be the 2nd witness

It is in a location that means a lot to us both. I am not having a new dress because I am going to wear one I already have, which I really love and hardly ever get to wear. We are having lots of flowers. It is just what we want.

SarfEast · 06/05/2009 09:25

I agree with you Trillian why princess? I want to be a bloddy queen. The princess thing makes me want to puke too, why just aiming for that, now a queen has real power

On our wedding day standing at the door of the church and seeing all of our friends was the loveliest part actually, not scary at all

Kewcumber · 06/05/2009 09:26

no thanks, can't imagine much worse than spending hundreds (or thousands) on a frock to be worn once.

All in favour of a nice party though.
