to expect that my dc should be able to play outdoors without being subjected to porn?

Dc & other neighbors riding bikes & scooters Sunday afternoon. I looked out to see that an older boy (12) was shoving a book in my dd's face (she's 8), forcing her & others to look. Dd covered ds' & neighbor girl's eyes with her hands (they're both 5), saying 'don't look, don't look'. I rush out, grab the book & see that it's an erotic comic book with drawings of naked men & women on the cover. Two other boys of around the same age are standing nearby, laughing. I shout at the boys, calling them dirty little perverts, where did you get this, how could you show such a thing to little kids, you should be ashamed of yourself, etc. Marched up to one boy's home, ready to blast the parents into orbit. No answer. So I call the police, who refer me to the child protection agency (closed on Sunday, of course). Meanwhile, dh is having more success locating parents who get a stern warning to keep their kid away from our dcs.

Should I contact the child protection agency or am I over-reacting? Other parents with little ones involved have now forbidden their dcs to leave their own gardens but it seems such a shame to keep them practically chained to the house.

We live in a hamlet, btw so no access to local park or playground without taking the car.

er
read the thread

BigBellasBeerBelly · 22/04/2009 13:16

Has anyone here actually seen any 18+ manga?

They're the only type of comic books that I can think of which feature nudity and sex.

Would people still be happy if that's what the boys were trying to force them to look at?

People seem very keen to imagine that the images were drawings of naked people, which I agree is pretty harmless.

I am trying to point out that many publications contain content that would be illegal if it were real people doing it.

Nancy66 · 22/04/2009 13:16

Blimey - what an hysterical over reaction.
A pubescent boy looks at a wank mag and you call the police !

spicemonster · 22/04/2009 13:18

My and my friends knew where all our dads kept their porn stashes

It's not very nice behaviour certainly but it's the sort of thing kids do. I'd speak to the parents and leave it at that. I can't believe you called the police tbh.

Gracie - drawing any parallels between this and what happened to those boys the other week is frankly absurd

If a man went up to a woman and showed her "indecent images" ( say as we don't know what these were) he would be charged, if his intent was to scare someone and it was as they protested AND they were in a position of authority or a LOT older than the victims, he would be in serious trouble.

VinegarTitsThePorker · 22/04/2009 13:19

I agree that the op has over-reacted

spicemonster · 22/04/2009 13:19

I have seen Manga Nancy and agree that some of it is pretty dubious. But you're assuming that's what it was and there's no evidence of that. I'm sure the OP would have mentioned it if it had been hardcore S&M!

OrmIrian · 22/04/2009 13:20

DO we know it's manga?

Nancy66 · 22/04/2009 13:20

Wot? i've no idea what the mag was...

JosieMiller · 22/04/2009 13:21

A lot of sex offenders (not saying this is the case here) start with many minor offences before they act on their impulses.

Kids need to know what is right and wrong. and if we are too scared to tell them..

Eve4Walle · 22/04/2009 13:21

If the cartoons were 'hentai' then they were very likely to depict rape and abuse of young girls and not just be 'nudey pictures'.

I'm with BBBB on this one, forcing a 5 year old to look at ANY kind of material containing nude images is too much IMHO. Some 5 year olds might be able to shrug it off and may indeed not be bothered about it, by my 5 year old certainly isn't ready to see this kind of thing and I'd also be worried about the way porn in general demeans and degrades women and that is definietly not something I want my DD to think is right.

I doubt I'd have called the police but I'd definitely be asking the parents involved to keep their kid the hell away from mine.

VinegarTitsThePorker · 22/04/2009 13:23

If it were me i wouldnt have made a huge scene infront of the little ones, i would have confiscated the mag and told the boys i will be speaking to their parents, then let the parents deal with them and leave it at that.

Calling the police/CPA and shouting 'dirty little perverts' at them, was way over the top

VinegarTitsThePorker · 22/04/2009 13:25

'Kids need to know what is right and wrong' i agree, but it is down to the boys parents to tell them that, the op should be speaking directly with the parents on this one

BigBellasBeerBelly · 22/04/2009 13:25

No we don't know that it was manga/hentai (whatever that is) or anything as dark as that.

I am just trying to point out that assuming the pictures were "harmless" ie just nudey drawings may be off the mark.

We don't know either way, but the content could have been really awful.

MintyyAeroEgg · 22/04/2009 13:26

"Blimey - what an hysterical over reaction.

Why can't people read the thread? Or read the OP propertly, at least, if you can't be arsed to read the whole thread.

Nancy - A pubescent boy looked at a wank mag and forced an 8 year old and two 5 year olds to look at it and the younger children were upset.

That is what was in the OP.

JosieMiller · 22/04/2009 13:26

Im with you minty

MrsTittleMouse · 22/04/2009 13:27

I agree with minty too.

OrmIrian · 22/04/2009 13:28

If the 8yr old just said something like' don't be so silly, we aren't interested in that' and they carried on playing, I think the boys would have stopped. I doubt very much it was truly malicious in intent, just mischevious, stupid and misguided. They wanted a reaction.

But as soon as people start getting overheated and hysterical something that could have been dismissed harmlessly gains much more importance.

Hentai magazines are sexually explicit comics popular in Japan.
