to expect that my dc should be able to play outdoors without being subjected to porn?

Dc & other neighbors riding bikes & scooters Sunday afternoon. I looked out to see that an older boy (12) was shoving a book in my dd's face (she's 8), forcing her & others to look. Dd covered ds' & neighbor girl's eyes with her hands (they're both 5), saying 'don't look, don't look'. I rush out, grab the book & see that it's an erotic comic book with drawings of naked men & women on the cover. Two other boys of around the same age are standing nearby, laughing. I shout at the boys, calling them dirty little perverts, where did you get this, how could you show such a thing to little kids, you should be ashamed of yourself, etc. Marched up to one boy's home, ready to blast the parents into orbit. No answer. So I call the police, who refer me to the child protection agency (closed on Sunday, of course). Meanwhile, dh is having more success locating parents who get a stern warning to keep their kid away from our dcs.

Should I contact the child protection agency or am I over-reacting? Other parents with little ones involved have now forbidden their dcs to leave their own gardens but it seems such a shame to keep them practically chained to the house.

We live in a hamlet, btw so no access to local park or playground without taking the car.

If it was manga or similar then they often have depictions of rape S&M and other sexual violence. They can be very graphic.

Not just pictures of breasts.

Of course i don't know what sort of "comic" it was but just wanted to point out that some of these publications are definitely XXX.

littlesilversnowbeetle · 22/04/2009 13:02

see Sidge I think early exposure to pornographic representations of sexuality gives children a warped perception of the human body

littlesilversnowbeetle · 22/04/2009 13:02

nudity and porn are not interchangeable!

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:06

oh COME ON dont go on about the dirty perverts bit

what was the kids intention - NOT natural curisoity
the were DELIBERATELY trying to uspet other kids

BitOfFun · 22/04/2009 13:07

I thought it was our generation that used to find pages from pornos floating randomly across school playing fields etc? You don't get that much these days. Kids are more at risk mollycoddled up in their rooms in front of the computer.

does that sound like natural curiosity

the kids were saying NO adn they were being harrassed.

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:08

oh fgs
you lot are missing the point totally with obsessing on the perverts bit.

Littlesilversnowbeetle - I totally agree that porn gives a very warped representation of the human body. I was seeing it more that the OP had mentioned a comic book with drawings of nude people on the cover, which to me isn't necessarily pornographic and for the OP to storm in, snatch it away and refer to the 'holder' as a pervert could indicate to her children that nudity is perverse.

But of course if it was a really explicit magazine with diagrams of penetration etc then that is a different kettle of fish.

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:09

THINK BACK to those bullying boys the toher week who are charged wiht attempted murder, do you think their victims said "No " too?

as women we should respect the right to say no.

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:10

oh god I'm assuming it's erotic fiction with porny drawings - not Claire Rayner's "body book"

The porn we found floating around was pretty innocuous though really.

Children are naturally curious, yes, and will seek out material as and when they want to, or be shown it by friends in a giggly way.

Forcing little tinies to look at it when they don't want to is different - they didn't have the curiosity in the first place. The intention was to upset and that is horrible.

Also quite a lot of "cartoon" stuff is way more hardcore than the average playboy, an if that's what it was I would be really pissed off. Potentially it could have been really nasty stuff that I woulnd't want to look at myself.

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:11

how is it not bullying

they were harrasing the girls showing them something they didnt want to.
If they had done this as adults they would be charged

Sidge · 22/04/2009 13:12

And I agree that having anything shoved in your face is inappropriate and could be upsetting for the younger children but it doesn't necessitate the actions of the OP IMO.

NO
adn we all sometimes overreact
but to think that calling a kid a pervert will harm them for life is stupid.

OrmIrian · 22/04/2009 13:13

The 'tinies' weren't objecting. The 8yr old was. I'm not saying it's ideal to show children of those ages porn but I strongly suspect that the the overreaction is going to make the children either terribly distressed around the subject of sex and nudity, or fascinated.

littlesilversnowbeetle · 22/04/2009 13:13

I think there may well have been a bullying element to it - 12yo boys forcing littler children to look at something they know is inappropriate (and they knew, otherwise why do it?) is potentially quite threatening IMO

VinegarTitsThePorker · 22/04/2009 13:14

I found those pages too BOF! i also found my dads stash of porn mags when i was about 10, i was fasinated to say the least, it did me no harm, i turned out quite normalish

GracieGrace · 22/04/2009 13:14

Totally.
Do not dismiss my opinion as hysterical.

atigercametotea · 22/04/2009 13:14

WAAAAAYYY over the top in terms of your reaction to and your language used in this situation.

The boys showing your childdren the comic are bound to be as 'traumatised' as your dc by being called 'dirty little perverts' - shocking language to use to 12 year old boys. So inappropriate!

Agree with other posters that a knock at the offenders parents doors should have sufficed here. Am only glad the child protection was closed, so that you didn't waste their time with this.

Have a sex talk with your children now if you haven't already. Now these other children know how angry you were, children being children, will only try to do it again, either in your bubble hamlet or at school.
