Following on from yesterday's "shit dog" thread, I've decided that you should buy a dog that SUITS you. Don't come on here saying "I'm a ballet dancer and my DH is a ballet dancer as well adn we have 14 rottweilers with studded collars" because you w...

We chose a labrador.
We live in the cuntry.
We own guns .
We wear Hunter wellies and Barbours on dog walks.

If we'd bought a little fluffy dog it would have been ridiculous.

If you don't suit your dog, maybe we could start a dog swap thread?

I was never particularly drawn to Golden Retrievers because like labs, I thought they were just a bit too predictable, like calling your child Laura or Matthew and driving a Ford! No offence, but just not my style. But having met loads of GRs out walking I've fallen for them. They are the most placid, gentle easy going sweet dogs ever. (next to mine of course!)

Actually, mine is gentle, sweet natured and easy going, but placid? No. He's loop the loop. ADHD dog.

OrmIrian · 11/03/2009 12:02

I don't have a dog.
I have rats.
And a cat.

dollius · 11/03/2009 12:09

Hurrah! A positive dog thread for a change!!

Another country-dwelling, posh wellies and Labrador-owner here. But, sadly no Barbour. DH has one, but no gun. We do own an estate car, but not a Volvo.

Are we letting the side down?

wotulookinat · 11/03/2009 12:15

I have a mad staff X mastiff. He has dodgy skin, so he matches my excema. He's also big and clumsy, like me.
I also have a staff x shar pei. He's lazy and old and overweight. Like me.

bratnav · 11/03/2009 12:23

We live in the outskirts of a large city with lovely walks close by.

We have a darling 10yo Dalmatian and a completely loopy but very affectionate 1yo Weimararner.

I work very PT (1 school length day a week) and we own an estate car, will we do?

TiggyR · 11/03/2009 12:48

I have one of these

I also have a lurcher-cross. I think my dogs perfectly suit my lifestyle because:

I live in the country, in a house that would be descibed by estate agents as 'charming and full of character' which means it's big, rambling, damp and slightly delapidated, embarrassingly fuel-inefficient, with an interesting line in wildlife residing in the roof. We have an Aga and more muddy boots than you can shake a stick at, and very posh neighbours. But then I completely let the side down by not having a gun, a pony, a paddock, a Barbour or any Hunters, or any proper serious country-set attire, or children at boarding school since they were embryos, or any family money whatsoever, and I say 'toilet'.

I go walking in a very Non-U bright red padded jacket and cheap pleb wellies, (though they are green) or fleecy lined snow boots. I did have a LandRover Discovery, (we recently sold it) but it was too posh and new and expensive to fill up with smelly wet dogs so mostly they travel around in my older, less posh Renault Espace instead, which makes me some kind of social leper in these parts I fear.

Morloth · 11/03/2009 12:53

We don't have a dog at the moment, just the cat. But when we move home to Oz we are getting a Blue Heeler, cause I want something to jog with, DH wants a "proper" dog and DS wants something to chase balls/sticks and wrestle with.

They are also extremely intelligent and good for herding toddlers.

Marne · 11/03/2009 12:58

We live in the country in a small house, i wear wellies. I have a Staffie .

mistlethrush · 11/03/2009 13:02

I've got a rescued x. She's probably got some lab or retreiver, a tiny bit of greyhound and alsation, but not really like anything in particular. I've got black wellies (bought in feed merchants') oh and we've got a skoda estate as its good for dh's double bass...

EmmalinaC · 11/03/2009 13:18

We've a got a lab/springer cross and we live in the suburbs.

We have wellies but no guns and a whole fleet of cars, most of which are 30 years old and a bit broken.

Aforementioned dog works part-time as a paper-shredder for a marketing company in Shoreditch (he comes with me) and enjoys regular walks in the parks and hills of Surrey.

Does that work?

PrammyMammy · 11/03/2009 18:51

I live in a flat on the outskirts of a small town.
We have three dogs, a toddler and another baby on the way.
My wellies are black with sparkles lol.
I work as a catering assistant and study childcare.
What are they?
Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Healthy so far. our Eldest is 7.

amazonianwoman · 26/11/2009 10:50

DH is 6ft 3, I'm 5ft 10, both stocky.

Live in town/village with reasonable fields, country walks near.

Spend most weekends on beach on Anglesey.

We've got a little miniature schnauzer (not fond of water).

Have Audi estate that dog can't even jump up into boot of. And looking at getting bigger Volvo next month - he'll never be able to manage that one.

Have enough outdoor/camping/sailing/cycling gear to open an outdoor shop.

I think we got it totally wrong

Our only defence is 2 small DCs...

ChilloHippi · 26/11/2009 11:01

Goodness me, this thread has been resurrected from MArch!

amazonianwoman · 26/11/2009 11:26

oops my fault

Thought I picked it up from "Last hour"

But obviously not

Now just remembered that I was doing a search on a good waterproof coat for walking my dog

ChilloHippi · 26/11/2009 23:15

that's a really random search to be doing

Vallhala · 26/11/2009 23:23

I live on the edge of a small town which is surrounded by countryside. I am owned-- by own a GSD and a Lab X. The GSD is a quiet wimp and the Lab X a stroppy git (just like me).

I have the wellies, the "decent go to the shops with the dogs" wind/waterproof jacket, the Barbour and the muddy waterproof for helping in my local rescue, where I get my fix of lovely dogs which, as gorgeous as they are, wouldn't suit me or my lifestyle.

Have I got it right?

PS Whats the "Shit Dogs" thread all about?

Vallhala · 26/11/2009 23:24

Whoops, sorry, didn't read the whole thread and realise the date. Am tired and stupid!

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/11/2009 23:37

i have a wimpy effeminate cavalier king charles spaniel who is a lurve machine and who likes to rest his head on fluffy cushions

i have another cavalier rescue who is a bit paranoid and scared of hoovers.

i think they suit me perfectly!

VengefulKitty · 26/11/2009 23:45

OK -

I live in the 'burbs and grew up with:

A fucking vicious chihuahua
A King Charles Spaniel (gentlest dog ever and we rescued her from a breeding centre after she had had 10 litters at age 8, sadly died 2 years later )
A Dobey (on his last legs, died within months, but owners were not interested, hence we took him on)
A Jack Russell Terrier - MY first owned dog at 11
A GSD (going to kark it soon at the age of 13.5 yrs )
A staffie x boxer and her son - both still living very healthy lives.

I and my mother have loved each and every one to the death and I don't care what others think, they had bloody good lives.

sb6699 · 26/11/2009 23:54

Judging by this thread I suppose I suit my dog

I have a black lab.
I live in the c*ntry.
I dont have guns (cos the farmer who owns everything around here wants to save the pheasants for himself).
I have green wellies (although am aspiring to Hunters because just so I can have matching welly socks).
I drive a Volvo Estate and Mondeo.

Morosky · 27/11/2009 00:02

I totally suit my dog, have a springer.

Live in countryside
Have Hunter wellies and Barbour
Am learning to shoot
We walk for hours every weekend

I have not always lived in the countryside but have always been an outdoor person.

I had to chuckle at him before he was in the garden with his bone growling at a pheasant that was sat a few yards away because he thought it was going to pinch his bone. It did not seem to enter his head that the pheasant was actally more tasty.

I don't get why people get dogs that don't match their lifestyle - it is hardly rocket science.

timelordvictorious · 27/11/2009 00:11

Two adults, reasonably countrysidy location, one toddler, two rottweilers.
I could go into why rotties are great with toddlers, but no one ever believes me...

I think they suit us.

daisydotandgertie · 27/11/2009 00:30

I have Aigle wellies and a Barbour that leaks and smells
We live in the c*ntry and have 2 guns
I have 2 much loved black labradors and pick up with one of them
I drive a volvo and a tractor and sometimes a quad bike.

MrsVik · 27/11/2009 05:27

I have heels and a 3/4 length wool coat. I love to be pampered and live in a large house in a small town. I have no idea what a Barbour is. I don't work and resent having to get out of bed before 9am. I don't drive, my husband drives me.

I have a cat.

(this post was partly mainly a joke)

CheerfulYank · 27/11/2009 05:46

We live in a rural town but plan to build in the country within the next 5 years. Husband owns guns but keeps them at his parent's farm. I love wellies (with wellie warmers naturally ) and we fish and hike and all that.

We have a golden mix. Stupidest dog alive, but couldn't be sweeter.
