Following on from yesterday's "shit dog" thread, I've decided that you should buy a dog that SUITS you. Don't come on here saying "I'm a ballet dancer and my DH is a ballet dancer as well adn we have 14 rottweilers with studded collars" because you w...

We chose a labrador.
We live in the cuntry.
We own guns .
We wear Hunter wellies and Barbours on dog walks.

If we'd bought a little fluffy dog it would have been ridiculous.

If you don't suit your dog, maybe we could start a dog swap thread?

We live in countryside with loads of brilliant rabbity, pheasanty walks. So actually it is completely brilliant having a parson russell terrier -- though strictly I ought to be a 50-year-old slightly dodgy man-in-a-flat-cap with a penchant for shooting squirrels.

bronze · 13/01/2009 11:23

Isnt the point more you should look like your dog.
I wish I could show you a pic of my brother and his dog. They look identical. Dog is a greyhound now I'm sure you can picture my brother.

KingCanuteIAm · 13/01/2009 11:24

JulesJules, it does not matter what you do as long as you never get either of those dogs, they are an insult to the canine species. That kind of breeding is a symptom of all that is wrong with the world today - just like Froot Shoots (vague reference from other thread).

Sounds like your DH would get on well with an English Bulldog though

poshwellies · 13/01/2009 11:27

haha threadworm-that makes 2 of us then!

Parsons have attitude

Threadworm · 13/01/2009 11:27

They are fabulous.

JulesJules - a King Charles Spaniel is probably a no-no, because of what KingCanute says, but a Kingkong spanion sounds awesome...where can you get them?

mysterymoniker · 13/01/2009 11:32

I have a working springer, he poses in my defender 90 for the shooting gazette

I wear Hunters when it's warm and leather wellies/riding boots when it's cold, and yes I have and wear a Barbour or a lighter weight Dryzabone

mysterymoniker · 13/01/2009 11:32

(live in the country obviously)

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 13/01/2009 11:33

We lost our dog last year and are going to get a new one in Spring.

Going with the flow of this thread, which dog would suit us?

DH works full-time as a Gardener, we live in a 3-bed semi with a good size garden, surrounded by walkable fields! DD(10) and DS (7) willing and able to take some responsibility for caring/walking/feeding etc. Work part-time so pooch will be home alone for few hours each day. Not really 'outdoorsy' types but last dog was much loved, big part of our family.

Not keen on huge mutts or 'yappy dogs'.

Whaddya think?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 13/01/2009 11:33

I agree king charles spaniels are not the nicest of dogs. my parents one has a terrible overbite which can be quite common and they are worried he has heart problems, very common with such 'bred' dogs.

A friend of mine, very small, loud and very Japanese (iyswim) has a papillon

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papillon_(dog)

It is an awful dog but it suits her. The poor thing is bullied by the neighbourhood cats.

Threadworm · 13/01/2009 11:35

I think we need to decide what kind of dog Rev should have. I suppose a Parson terrier might be the thing. Or something more mellow and reflective, perhaps a bloodhound.

Threadworm · 13/01/2009 11:36

...for a reverend, I mean.

What do you think of dalmations? I think I'd quite like one but would prefer an old english sheepdog.

Dalmations are loopy mainly, alot of them are deaf too-so you need to find a honest and trustworthy breeder.

Threadworm · 13/01/2009 11:43

ooooh of course -- sheepdog for shepherd-of-souls, rev.

Luckily hedgewitch, most other people worked out that I was joking...

NutterlyUts · 13/01/2009 11:45

I have chickens, live in the country, don't shoot or drive a landrover ;) and have a border collie I also take part in most of the different activities you can do with a dog. I think i'm suited to my dog

I also have a papillon.. but we don't mention him as counting as he's very catlike

JulesJules · 13/01/2009 11:46

I know, I love the sound of a KingKong Spanion too! I think DH would rather have a lab or retriever...

I think dalmations are fab - supposed to be a bit daft, aren't they? I've also always loved boxers - my dad used to have one.

OrmIrian · 13/01/2009 11:46

Well we have no dog. If we lived a different life we would. But I'm not sure that dogs in towns aren't more trouble than they are worth.

But I want an Irish wolfhound. Not a good idea in a moderately sized Victorian terrace full to bursting with 5 people, 1 cat,3 rats and some fish. But as I also crave a castle with a Great Hall and a large fireplace, a wolfhound would fit right in.

DH wants a jack russel - so you can just imagine the scale of his aspirations! Huh...peasant!

mysterymoniker · 13/01/2009 11:47

I want to know if people's cars match their dogs

so, if you're out and about in your Hunters and Barbour with your pseudo-gundog are you letting them in and out of the back of a Freelander (snigger) or a proper 4x4?

mooseloose · 13/01/2009 11:49

I have flowery millets wellies for fannying around in the garden but propa green ones for real gardening and walking in muck. I don't have a dog, but ds age 6 and 9 live most of their lives in muck in the fields at the back. Up the lane the other day we saw a gorgeous sweet natured (working farm dog) jack Russell pup. We all came home and wanted one!
