We chose a labrador.
We live in the cuntry.
We own guns .
We wear Hunter wellies and Barbours on dog walks.

If we'd bought a little fluffy dog it would have been ridiculous.

If you don't suit your dog, maybe we could start a dog swap thread?

ahhh

nice

(mine is a green 1998 hardtop 90)

(with an orange light on its head)

iggypiggy · 13/01/2009 16:51

Green is nice - I nearly sold it a year ago to someone I know and then they asked what colour and said 'oh - it has to be green' gave up bothering to sell it after that

orange light sounds nice - I got big floodlights on the back - and silver tread all over the bonnet - which is quite funky I think

iggypiggy · 13/01/2009 16:52

we have gone off topic haven't we... oops...

dogs - yeah...

plumandolive · 13/01/2009 17:07

NotBig- and great looks obviously... cuddly, charming, but not to be argued with- they know their own mind.

sleepyeyes · 13/01/2009 17:24

Ok dog owners choose me a dog that will suite my lifestyle.
We live in a large town but moving to a small village surrounded by countryside. I like to walk can walk for hours and hours. I like hugs so would like a cuddly dog. I'm a sensible person and I dont like anything wacky be that clothes or people. I'm short and stumpy.

I really really really want a Dachshund as I have looked after one before (was nanny for the family) and adored it, the dog was very keen on long walks and very affectionate. But we lived in a city not a village. Is a Dachshund suitable? Any other suggestions?

We had a cross bread Dalmation with a Whipet when I was a child, it was like a very stong mini pony a bit difficult to handle but I wouldn't mind a Dalmation. Would a short stumpy woman look daft with a slim tall elegant Dalmation?

sleepyeyes · 13/01/2009 17:28

Forgot to add our car is a Lexus. Not sure how relevant this is but it might help.

NotBigJustBolshy · 13/01/2009 17:29

plumandolive - you have almost convinced me to create a profile - just so I can post a pic . Yes, real characters! (Trouble is, ds is also a terrier-type. Whereas dd 10 is more of a border collie. Agilty training seemed to work for all three, though!)

Ronaldinhio · 13/01/2009 17:34

we have a minature long haired daschund

we are both very tall
but I have long hair

he is very curious, thinks he's a big brave dog, plays endlessly with the children and is immensely patient.
He's also very affectionate, clean, loyal and totally low maintenence

Things I'd like to be....

sleepyeyes · 13/01/2009 17:41

Ronaldinhio the one I look after was great with the kids which is why I think they are fab family dogs it also though it was an alsation! On the down side it was a very naughty dog.
LOL your hair, my own hair is dark and poker straight mid-lenght so might suit a long haired but does get a bit wild and messy looking maybe I should get a wired hair.
Does your dach travel OK in the car? The one I looked after always got car sick.

tootyflooty · 13/01/2009 17:51

not allowed a dog, (dh will leave !!!) only have 6 guinea pigs, 1 hamster and a cat. (one dog would have been less work!) if I was getting one would like a working cocker (nice size for sitting on lap) or a lab.
I do have posh wellies, but no wax jacket, also no tattoes.

smudgethepuppydog · 13/01/2009 17:58

I live in the countryside, I don't own a gun or a pair of Hunter wellies but I do own a Labrador/collie cross (he looks like a lab) he is the biggest tart of a dog known to mankind.

Ronaldinhio · 13/01/2009 17:59

what about a long haired red?
Ours loves the car and will merrily sleep for hours...
Ours was a bit naughty until we sent him to stay with my friends very wise old dog and he returned a much more mature individual.
They're fab fab dogs and I'd recommend them to anyone

GrimmaTheNome · 13/01/2009 18:23

Oh, Sleepyeyes, you've pretty much saved me doing a description of myself! I alreadly live in a village, within easy distance of Lakes and Dales. Love cuddles. Love long walks (but sometimes dont get out for days at a time). Am short and stumpy but have lovely glossy hair.

I have a dachshund! Perfect - he can do long walks, but can do with just running round garden some days. V. cuddly. Moults less than I do. Very suitable for the country - its a hunting breed, after all, and the short-haired ones are excellent for muddy conditions, very easy to wipe off. (Pity folk with those big hairy spaniels and labs...most unsuitable for mud! )

We do have wellies, but are really walking boot types.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/01/2009 18:25

PS - my dachs (and the one before) travelled fine.

sleepyeyes · 13/01/2009 19:10

Grimma you have convinced me I getting a Dach even if DH leaves me.
So I guess if I have a dog and living in the countyside I will have to get wellie boots. Can you tell I'm a city girl?!

pointydog · 13/01/2009 19:20

Is this just for dogs?

We own a cat and it is stoopid. It doesn't suit me, I'm sure.

Vulgar · 13/01/2009 19:26

If we are doing cats, my British shorthair girl cat is just like me; old and saggy with rounded edges no matter how fat or thin , dodgy bowels and easy going - but doesn't take any crap from anyone.

pointydog · 13/01/2009 19:29

You've made me think, vulgar. My cat is also lazy and thick round the middle and really can't be arsed with much. I should just accept facts and keep her.

Vulgar · 13/01/2009 19:51

I think cats PRETEND they are stupid.

Booboobedoo · 13/01/2009 20:08

Poledra: I have no idea, tbh. Generally speaking, dogs need to be with others, so working full time isn't great.

Maybe call the rescue centre. They might suggest you take in two dogs...

differentID · 13/01/2009 20:19

my own darling dog has to live with my mother where I grew up because both of us work full time and we have a postage stamp sized yard. Miss her so much as it's not the same just visiting her. If we ahd a huge garden she would be with me.

FuriousGeorge · 13/01/2009 20:23

I live in the country,we own 2 guns but no dogs.I do not wear fancy coloured wellies as I wear them for work & also help out on a shoot and would look stupid in flowery/pastel coloured boots.

What dog would suit me?

FuriousGeorge · 13/01/2009 20:38

Just read the rest of the thread.Mysterymoniker,do you know Martin from the Shooting Gazette? He's a lovely chap.

GrimmaTheNome · 13/01/2009 20:44

Not wellies, sleepy eyes - WALKING boots. wellies are crap for walking in and your toes get cold. Only useful if your walk definitely includes wading in streams (which most dachsies will do, but reluctantly. Another advantage... no big wet smelly dog in the car or house , just nice smallish dry one.

The only difference between country and city is, you need a standard dachs for the former and a mini for the latter. Any other breeds only worth considering if you're actually needing a gundog or ratter

sleepyeyes · 13/01/2009 23:32

Grimme I will probably get a standard wired hair.
Boots a good idea! Kicking myself I gave away a pair last year, ahh well any excuse to go shopping.
