Following on from yesterday's "shit dog" thread, I've decided that you should buy a dog that SUITS you. Don't come on here saying "I'm a ballet dancer and my DH is a ballet dancer as well adn we have 14 rottweilers with studded collars" because you w...

We chose a labrador.
We live in the cuntry.
We own guns .
We wear Hunter wellies and Barbours on dog walks.

If we'd bought a little fluffy dog it would have been ridiculous.

If you don't suit your dog, maybe we could start a dog swap thread?

Do you find your dog or your children need to be exercised more?
And if you have more than one- how do you deal with the scrapping, sibling rivalry, fairness etc?

Furiousgeorge- The Shooting Gazette?
There's a publication called that which people read?

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 08:10

no furiousgeorge, most of the posing for the shooting gazette takes place in my dog's imagination - he just likes to arrange himself into various poses that he thinks would make a nice cover for his favourite magazine

aren't dogs silly!

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 08:12

plumandolive - there are some great magazine titles out there, the Crafty Carper often catches my eye and there's a Smallholders Monthly which can advise on keeping alpaca geldings with sheep and that sort of thing

tries not to want an alpaca

plumandolive · 14/01/2009 08:13

Do you shoot pheasants or partridges?

Do you eat them all?

HeadFairy · 14/01/2009 08:16

Small Spanish man living down the road from me in a tiny flat has a Rhodesian Ridgeback!! Makes me chuckle every time I see him out walking it, the dog comes up to his nipples I kid you not!

We used to live in the country and had a border collie (and barbour jackets, Hunter wellies and a gun) so I guess we didn't break any rules there, but part of me would like to break the dog ownership rules in the manner of tiny Spanish man with huge Rhody!!!

plumandolive · 14/01/2009 08:17

I just read the whole thread again too.
mystery-I'm interested in the green lane organisation The off roaders, hunt followers and motorbike scramblers that use them can upset horse riders and peaceful moorland places. They also create huge ruts and pits- obviously fun to drive on, but quite inconvenient for people working in the countryside, like farmers etc.

plumandolive · 14/01/2009 08:28

Crafty Carper..... I'm interested....
and I thought you were having a dig
I try not to carp too often

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 08:33

I haven't tried actual green laning yet - would like to have a go but need someone with me in case I get stuck and haven't found anyone yet. Don't think we've got many lanes in my immediate area anyway.

TheMolesMother · 14/01/2009 09:03

Live in semi-rural France where I run a B&B in a huge late 18th/early 19th maison de maitre surrounded by fields. Am owned by a rescued fox terrier cross (don't know what with but suspect kangaroo from the way he can jump) who thinks he's in charge.

He's stubborn as hell and only comes when called if he feels like it but in many ways he's perfect for a B&B dog. He's incredibly friendly, gentle, good with kids, and clients are always trying to steal him when our backs are turned.

Motorbike scramblers are a real pain, they have caused bad damage to the moors near us in Yorkshire.

minxofmancunia · 14/01/2009 09:38

I used to have a whippet, skinny and trembling full of nervous energy, alternating between hecticness and lethargy,

looks appealing but can be irritating at times, with an abnormally large appetite for its' size.

plumandolive · 14/01/2009 10:50

Mrs Tweedy- yes- exactly. And they make a really horrid nosise in a beautiful peaceful unspoilt place.
But the hunt followers are bad too, they churn it all up.

HelenBurns · 14/01/2009 10:53

But a lot of people DO choose a dog that is right for them. Or at least looks like them!

There is a woman near where I used to live. She had one of those little tiny boxer type cross things. It was the fattest most chesty little pudding you had ever seen. Dark brown, slightly stupid looking.

She had dark brown hair and clothes, and was built exactly like the dog. I mean, totally top heavy, she even walked like him.

I had to stifle a smile every time I saw them. It was bizarre.

Debs75 · 14/01/2009 11:45

Sunnygirl I have a bassett and she is just like me
stubborn
loyal
a bit freaky and looks like a barrel on legs
We live in the city but have access to country walks. She soes look out of place as almost all the other dogs nearby are horrible staffies

mysterymoniker · 14/01/2009 11:50

poor staffies

it's not their fault is it?

Marne · 14/01/2009 12:02

Staffies are lovely dogs, they just have a bad name as so many turn violent after being in the wrong hands and treated badly, my staffie is my autistic dd's best friend.

HelenBurns · 14/01/2009 12:05

Oh that's what it is, it's a staffie I think.

I am rubbish with dog breeds!

Marne · 14/01/2009 12:10

My Staffie is on my profile page (she's not very staffy looking though (her ears shouldn't be stuck up)

LittleB · 14/01/2009 12:22

What about dogs of different breeds, do I have a split peronality? I have a beautiful elegant working Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and a scruffy little black Border Terrier cross! I think I aspire to be like my gorgeous NSDTR but know I'm really just like my scruffy terrier! But both are working breeds, I do live in the country, and have a pair of Hunter wellies(black with red bits), my dogs are working and come to work with me 3 days a week - I work PT as a Countryside Ranger!

TwoIfBySea · 14/01/2009 12:22

Old English Sheepdogs are fine if you like grooming I grew up with one and she was lovely.

I've never met a Dalmation that wasn't daft!

I've had German Shepherds, I currently have a guide dog pup (who will be leaving in June when I'll get another) and he is a lab/retriever cross. I live near enough in the country and near lots of country parks. Why did anyone think having a light coloured lab was a good idea I don't know as he comes home tip to toe in mud!

FuriousGeorge · 14/01/2009 12:48

MysteryMoniker,Ah,I understand now.

PlumandOlive,I don't shoot,but do beat for a small local farmer's shoot.We eat all the birds shot,whether pheasant,partridge,or woodpigeon.I have a well stocked freezer..

LucyEllensmummy · 14/01/2009 13:32

I have a JRT X. I used to have a rotweiller (he needed a whole lot LESS exercise than the JRT). We live in a seaside town that has a higher than average proportion of beden wearersper capita. Don't have any wellies wear horse riding boots (non welly type) on dog walks, used to have a barbour and hankering after another. DP thinking of getting gun license. He wants a new dog.

LucyEllensmummy · 14/01/2009 13:33

boden wearers

FfreckleFface · 14/01/2009 16:00

Oh lordy...I have just added a picture of the dogs, Bloke, and little Ff to my profile. Please have a look. As I uploaded it, it occured to me that Bloke is wearing a sports shirt, and the baby is wearing a hoody...therefore we look exactly like rottweiler owners!

chilli223 · 17/01/2009 08:59
