To be highly irritated about the Twin thread - school trip fees

I can't understand how people think that having two children close together has a similar financial impact as having twins (or higher multiples) .

As a mum of dearly loved DTs, this makes me annoyed because parents of twins have to buy two lots of baby equipment (double pram, two cots, highchairs, nappies!!) at the same time and as they grow nothing can be passed down. Also have to pay two lots of childcare/nursery fees, when they want to do activities they can only do them if you can afford to pay twice (mine have to do exactly the same things as I'm not having either of them miss out). When they start school, two lots of uniform, coats, shoes not to mention trips, then there's beds, larger car, university fees etc, etc.

At least parents who have kids close together can reuse a lot of stuff and anyway, it is their CHOICE to have them close together, you have no choice over whether you have twins and I don't believe that anyone who decides to get pregnant thinks 'oh, better wait until I'm sure I can afford 2 in case I have twins'. People who have children close together can plan to space out their children if they can't afford it.

Therefore, I think schools should help out parents of twins, triplets etc and they should not have to pay the same as singletons!!

Haven't read the whole thread - but schools don't get extra money for twins on roll either. SO that would mean other children were penalised wouldn't it? Just a thought...!

However, other posters are right, the school cannot penalise you if you cannot afford or are unwilling to pay.

Good posts madmarg and tigger.

yesmynameisigglepiggle · 12/01/2009 12:45

this thread si just ridiculous
aren't twins 2 people?? Or do you see them as one???

sarararararah · 12/01/2009 13:15

That was to the OP by the way not anyone else - as, as I said before I haven't read the whole thread.

onager · 12/01/2009 13:29

Just want to add that I think all these trips and other demands for money are unnecessary. They harp on about how everyone must wear the school uniform so that no one will know who is poor and then seperate them up into those who can afford all these extras and who can't.

They should only be doing this stuff if it is essential for their education and if it is then the school should pay out of its budget just as it pays for teachers wages and heating. "Trips abroad, Raffles, gardening days, buy a cake, sponsor a teacher" I doubt any of that is essential.

In truth they'd probably be better off spending the time in a classroom learning stuff. I'd sooner they found time to learn to read and do simple arithmatic before they leave school.

The only educational trips I went on were when we walked to a very old local church (it fitted in with a history lesson) and to the park to examine trees and leaves etc.

MadMarg · 12/01/2009 13:49

Oh no, Onager - I remember my school trips with great fondness. I went to almost all of them (but they sound a darn site more reasonably priced than the 100s of pounds that people are talking about here) and occasionally reminisce about them with some old school friends.

I think day outings can be really educational and fun at the same time. Camps can be a great way for children to learn to socialise and get out and about and try things that otherwise they would never get the chance to do otherwise. And really, true education is more than just learning to read and write, but also about broadening a child's horizons.

juuule · 12/01/2009 13:56

School trips of the kind that seem to be being talked about on this thread were/are too expensive for us so none of our children have gone on them.

MadMarg · 12/01/2009 14:03

True, but Onager seems to think that only essential education trips should be allowed. That would just be so sad if that were the case.

violethill · 12/01/2009 18:45

'this thread si just ridiculous

hear hear!!

I cannot believe that this is still going on!!
Some parents of twins will find it tough financially.
Some parents of singletons will find it tough financially.
Some parents of 3 or more kids will find it tough financially.
Anyone who has had children with very close age gaps will have to double up on equipment, buy a double pushchair etc etc.
As for University costs, if you have 3 or more children close together you're probably gonna be stuffed! I'm fully expecting that! We're likely to be paying for 3 at the same time.
The school trips thing, if we're talking about actual, educational school trips during school time - well for years now, no child can be excluded from these on financial grounds anyway. The reality is that other parents or the school have to subsidise other kids anyway. If we're talking residential trips/ski trips/blah blah blah then get real - loads of us have never paid for those anyway because they're too pricey.
As for buying equipment, someone further back suggested that parents of singletons can afford new whereas parents of twins are expected to buy secondhand or wash the babies in a bucket... FGS since when have babies needed everything new?
We had to double up on everything with our two with a 14 month gap, and we begged, borrowed and bought second hand.

Honestly, having read this thread I have to say I'm delighted I haven't had a multiple birth, not because of financial reasons but because most of the parents seem to be such whingers!

Shock
juuule · 12/01/2009 19:00

Yep have to say that I mostly agree with Violethill's post.

pamelat · 12/01/2009 19:22

Not read the twin thread????

Just shocked at Thecrackfox's friend. I cant believe that someone would have sex within 2 weeks of giving birth. Ouch.

I wonder whether she meant to get pregnant. Blimey.

TheLadyEvenstar · 12/01/2009 20:44

Pamelet,

The twin thread was from me here is the link

this is what this thread is about

blueshoes · 13/01/2009 08:43

violethill says it like it is.

FAQtothefuture · 13/01/2009 08:56

"You chose to do the deed,it was your choice. "

~Oh that old chestnut again - yes of course we all acknowledge that when you have sex there's always a chance you could fall pg.

However, life that doesn't work that way (have a look on the pregancy topic on MN see how many fell pg while using precauctions/after taking the MAP) - are you saying that people should just abstain from sex ........

Half of MN would fall silent if they couldn't talk about sex in one guise or another

TheLadyEvenstar · 13/01/2009 10:22

FAQ lol the sheer thought of that!!!! Silence on MN lol.

I did fall pg while on the pill BOTH times....in between that I was on the depo jab for a long time...no scares there thankfully.
