I don't find them obscene, I just think they might as well say 'wanker', which is what they mean to me.

My BF's DP recently got a personalised numberplate and I felt sorry for her having to tell me about it - she know's I'm a total snob about things like that. I managed to restrain my desire to shout 'What the FUCK did he do that for etc etc' in favour of saying 'wow, right, ok' etc.

Apparently he told her 'It's an investment'

MorrisZapp · 02/12/2008 15:34

'Know's'??

Er, knows, obv...

nancy75 · 02/12/2008 15:34

my dad bought his for £50 years ago, its worth thousands now, i doubt if he cares if people think he is tacky.

VinegarTinselTits · 02/12/2008 15:35

YABU its up to them and none of your business

LulumamaLovesLatkes · 02/12/2008 15:35

why does anyone have a handbag that costs more than £3 ?

why does anyone spend more than £1 on a pair of socks?

why does anyone have a car at all, when there are buses?

we've had our plates for 8 years now, so it is not like you have to buy a new one every year, DH and I work hard to earn our money, don;t have to justify what it is spent on

chacun a son gout

buying number plates contributes to the DVLA employees incomes and puts money into the economy, it is just as much a reasonable thing to spend on as anything else, if oyu like them

and why the presumption that

  1. they all cost £1000s or obscene amounts
  2. that those who have them do not give to charity

i presume you are not buying anything for oyurself and family and DCs for xmas and are giving all hte money to charity..?

LulumamaLovesLatkes · 02/12/2008 15:36

ooh, morris, shall i change my name to lulumamawanker

OneBoyOneGirlWithBellsOn · 02/12/2008 15:37

I dont think there is a point, just an accessory like any other. I don't see them as tacky though, they don't really bother me. I'd have one - if i had any more, oh and a car, and could drive.

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 02/12/2008 15:37

YABU

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 02/12/2008 15:38

OneBoyOneGirlWithBellsOn · 02/12/2008 15:38

MorrisZapp · 02/12/2008 15:39

YABU

i would like one, but never found what i would like

people spend their money on what they like, whether nice holidays, handbags or number plates

have sevaral friends with them, and i live in an area which LOTS of the cars have the towns name/initalas their number plate and then other letter/numbers

also in my last job, my work car and many of his school friends cars were their name and private

SoupDragon · 02/12/2008 15:44

Everyone should only buy "value" ranges - anything else is an obscene waste of money.

VinegarTinselTits · 02/12/2008 15:46

Just ordered 'G3T 0V3RIT' for you Christiana

There are lots of things people buy that dont contribute to anything, whats your point?

Wallaroo · 02/12/2008 15:47

Obscene - no unnecessary - yes
