I think they are embarrassing
A bit like wearing shades with D&G emblazoned down the arms in gold and diamante

They scream "I AM A CHAV"

MorrisZapp · 02/12/2008 16:29

Sunshine on Leaf

I'm still coming to terms with the fact there is/ was a shop halfway down the Walk that sold televisions and dart boards.

I mean... wtf? Only in Leith!

CountessDracula · 02/12/2008 16:29

they stand out in the crowd
Yes but in a sad way

lizandlulu · 02/12/2008 16:30

yup, thats me. sad.

samsonara · 02/12/2008 16:40

It's their money, their car and it's not really something I'd describe as obscene , showoffy and attention seeking yes, but then most people do that in one way or another, even over a few hundred quid expensive buggies can be seen in the same way, each to their own as long as it's not harming anyway.

rislip · 02/12/2008 16:43

My old boss when I worked at a hedge fund had one he sold for £90k. I kid you not.

elmoandella · 02/12/2008 16:48

depends on what kind of personalised plate. one where by you have no idea what it actually means are a bit pointless and dont cost alot (can be a great cheap but thoughtful gift for someone)

however. my dp has one. which is very obvious and is his exact name. exactly right. he has 1's for "l"'s so his looks exactly as his name is. it cost him a fair bit when he bought it. but it was an investment. as it's worth alot more now.

to him it is an investment. and it's his surname. and will be passed down to his son one day.

tiredsville · 02/12/2008 16:50

YABU, what people buy with their money is none of your business.
Saying 'why not donate the money to charity?' is a bit of a naff comment too.
I think Personal number plates are tacky. Where I live, practically every other person has a personalised plate, it's like they are little clones of one another. The fact they are so common, makes them appear tacky. But I don't get offended and find it obscene [sigh]

lol @ this thread! Some people get worked up about daft things!

AlanPartridgeInAPearTree · 02/12/2008 16:59

for what my humble opinion is worth, I do not think they are obscene, people spend far too much money on many other things which i find much more obscene.

What irritates me however, is that many of these so called personalised numberplates are actually ILLEGAL, due to the messing around with the spaces and the cutesy scripts they get written in, to make numbers look more like letters and vice versa. Those numberplates are there to help ID a car not to entertain other road users or as a status symbol.

Lulumamawanker · 02/12/2008 17:10

whoingodsnameami · 02/12/2008 17:11

I saw a personalised number plate the other day, it was....

P4 ERT

CountessDracula · 02/12/2008 17:12

what does that mean?

whoingodsnameami · 02/12/2008 17:13

Only one word springs to mind for me, maybe it was an enreged wife who ordered it gor her DH

BusyBeeWithThree · 02/12/2008 17:17

There is a couple in our village - she has one that spells out orgasm and he has big boy!!! It makes me lol everyday!!!!

tiredsville · 02/12/2008 17:17

I always get irritated when a person preaches what someone else spends their money on.
My family member donates tens of thousands of pounds to charity and has a personalised number plate. Their is nothing wrong with being a little indulgent on yourself as long as you give a little back.

donnie · 02/12/2008 17:19

oh yes, strictly for 'new money, and those people who have lots of cash and very little taste. They are a chav's paradise.

I bet Coco Chanel never had one.

Lulumamawanker · 02/12/2008 17:21

yes, am a sad chav wanker, with no style, taste and am nouveau.

would rather be that , than as judgey as some people on this thread !
