I have one DH bought me. It is not obscene. What a strange way to describe a numberplate unless it involves offensive language.

I must also confess to sometimes buying other things that don't 'do' anything or 'contribute' to anything. Not that I agree that buying a personalised number plate doesn't contribute anyway - people are employed making them and administering them.

Am waiting expectantly for the year BI64RSE is available. Will require creative work to turn the 6 into a G but I'm confident it can be done.

Lol @ soupdragon's xmas present!

My DP's ex has one on her flashy car which she sometimes swaps with DP for his more sensible 4-seater when she needs to do more than pose, i.e. take their son and a friend somewhere, fit something in the boot, you know the kind of thing...When I get out of hers and think people reckon I must be the bearer of her daft name tag, I cringe inwardly every time...I must be a snob too!

Lulumamawanker · 02/12/2008 15:49

they do contribute..

not just by putting money into the economy, supporting jobs in the DVLA and most importantly, providing something for you to get your knickers in a twist about!

see, everyone's a winner!

kkey21 · 02/12/2008 15:50

I got mine for my 21st birthday-still love it 8 years later! Mine is fairly good i think-its as close to my name as we could get without costing £39,000 like one i liked

I know someone who has their house number and letters of street name
eg: 154 SHL (School House Lane) Strange!?

Lulumamawanker · 02/12/2008 15:51

i;d also like to know if i am allowed to have one, as i give to charidee and do volunteering, thereby counterbalancing my wankerishness....

Snaf · 02/12/2008 15:52

Not obscene. Definitely wanky though.

Sorry Lulu

Aren't PNB's the equivalent of 'bling' though, in that pretty much their sole purpose is to say 'Look, I can afford to buy this useless item, so I will'.

I waste money on needless things all the time so I can't claim to be frugal or the arbiter of taste, but when I buy more expensive things I do it because they are qood quality, they look nice, or they suit/fit me better than the cheaper equivalent.

Isn't there are argument that none of that applies to number plates, which are just a way of brazenly demonstrating wealth - kind of the driving equivalent of having BURBERRY or other brand written in big letters on your clothes? 'LOOK WHAT I PAID FOR THIS' etc, which is tacky by any definition?

A car itself can be very expensive, but that money buys you performance, reliability etc. You are paying for quality, not just show.

I'm not saying people can't spend their money how they please, they can of course. I'm just saying why they may be seen as tacky.

TheSeriousOne · 02/12/2008 15:53

Agree with Lulumamaloves latkes.

We have them (though not those shoddy ones where you have to put stupid dots to try and make an 8 look like an O or similar.

My dream number is on the market but costs £35K

stillstanding · 02/12/2008 15:54

Think they are generally ghastly.

UnquietDad · 02/12/2008 15:55

They are ridiculously unnecessary and expensive.

W4N K3R5.

coolma · 02/12/2008 15:55

I'd love one, but the only way that will happen is if I change my name to T576VEB (made up number plate, but you know what I mean!)

Snaf · 02/12/2008 15:57

Although, a friend of mine has M1D W1F3 (or similar) which is amusing. Ish. For about 0.3 seconds.

chocolateteapot · 02/12/2008 15:57

Not my cup of tea but did have to smile when parked behind one at DS's nursery. I think it is supposed to be a name but it wasn't completely obvious what it was supposed to be so it had her name printed in small letters underneath.

UnquietDad · 02/12/2008 15:58

T055 3R5.

stillstanding · 02/12/2008 15:58

The ones that are not awful are those where the message is significant to the owner but not to anyone else.

Like kkey21's example (the house number and letters of street name). That's quite good but the rest .. Ghastly.

Gateau · 02/12/2008 15:58

They're not OBSCENE, but I think they're really, really sad.
I agree, what's the point?
Do the people who have them really think they are so important that other drivers will recognise them - or care if they recognise them?
WTF??!

mayorquimby · 02/12/2008 15:58

ha ha we don't get them over here (ireland) as it is just done in sequence of when you register the car, so the 5th car bought in dublin next year will be 09-D-5 except you can guarentee that 911 has been reserved by someone buying a porche. and my dad is a huge bond fanatic, so when he bought his aston martin a couple of years back he got the number plate spaced out by a cunningly placd screw so it was so the number was "32 . 007"

BitOfFunUnderTheMistletoe · 02/12/2008 15:58

When DP sold his last car to a dealership, they found it used to be registered as
B16 B0Y - there is no way I'd have gone out with him if it had been that when we met!

Snaf · 02/12/2008 15:58

Oh yes, I love those ones, chocolateteapot. Pointless, much?!
