to feel uncomfortable being served by woman with tourettes that kept swearing at me?

I went to a well known high street store and was served by a lady who had tourettes. I have no problem with this or any of her ticks BUT she kept saying cunt and wanker - i dont use these words in front of my children so dont expect others to AIBU in expecting that she shouldnt be serving customers?

It was rather disconcerting to be told "thats £20.00 please, cunt, wanker"

I think it's a touchy subject, they can't discriminate against her for her condition, but at the same time I know what you're saying.

I don't have any issues with people with tourettes, but to be served by one who was saying these words in front of me let alone my child, well I wouldn't be too happy about it.

It'd be unfiar to not let her serve customers, but at the same time I don't think it's fair to anybody on the recieving end of hearing those words!

Catch 22?

thisisyesterday · 30/11/2008 17:36

hmmm difficult one. i absolutely believe in giving everyone an equal opportunity, but as you say, it isn't really fair, esp if there are kids around, for them to be exposed to that.

mayorquimby · 30/11/2008 17:37

top notch

TackyChristmasLights · 30/11/2008 17:38

OH!
Yes to equal opportunities, but this is just so wrong in a shop!!!

Shocked.

Yes to children learning about all sorts of conditions but not learning this language at the same time.

thisisyesterday · 30/11/2008 17:39

i am not sure about the discrimination thing actually. if this is preventing her from doing her job properly then she should be working in other areas.
and I do think that customer services and not saying CUNT to small children IS a big part of your job when you are working in a shop.

racmac · 30/11/2008 17:41

My children are 3 and 19 mths - normally i would have had 8 year old as well. Ok 19 mth wouldnt have noticed but 3 yr old is just at point of picking up new words - thankfully he was distracted at the time.

revjustabout - i dont know she had tourettes butits the only condition i know of that makes people swear uncontrollably

Really quite inappropriate and thought the shop would think that this may put an awful lot of people off shopping there.
Commercial suicide surely.

babylovesmilk · 30/11/2008 17:41

YABU. Children need to leatn NOT to use such language by being told it is wrong and an explanation of the poor ladies condidtion. I am shocked that you would have a problem with this - you do know she can't help it?

racmac · 30/11/2008 17:42

Of course i know she cant help it - Im not for a minute suggesting she was doing it on purpose but i dont think my kids need to hear that language

OP posts:
needmorecoffee · 30/11/2008 17:42

the woman has a condition. Ignore what she says, your children wont melt. Anything else is disablist.
What next? OMG that quadraplegic is drooling????

racmac · 30/11/2008 17:43

How do you explain this to a 3 year old?

OP posts:
babylovesmilk · 30/11/2008 17:45

Tell them the lady can't help swearing but it is wrong for children to swear.

racmac · 30/11/2008 17:45

I did ignore it - i was just shocked to be greeted like that in a shop - i dont think im unreasonable in being shocked?

OP posts:
TotalChaos · 30/11/2008 17:46

agree with babylovesmilk. If your 3 year old picked up on the swear words - tell her they are not nice words/silly words so she shouldn't repeat them.

babylovesmilk · 30/11/2008 17:46

NU to be shocked no but your attitude worries me. Poor women.

babylovesmilk · 30/11/2008 17:47

I often hear people in public swearing in earshot of my DC (not people I know) and I ignore it.

Geepers · 30/11/2008 17:48

I don't believe the OP. Think it's nonsense to think a woman would be given a job serving members of the public if she has no control over her use of foul language.

racmac · 30/11/2008 17:49

Why? I didnt say anything to her - i was polite and thanked her and went about my business - i wasnt rude - i didnt make a fuss but i was shocked - not sure how that makes me have a bad attitude

OP posts:
racmac · 30/11/2008 17:49

geepers - i am NOT lying i promise - i guess thats why i was so shocked - ive certainly never come across that before

yanbu
maybe dd can get a job as a waitress when she is older. she has cp and loads of extra movements, so people will end up wearing their order.

CatchaStar · 30/11/2008 17:57

babylovesmilk I think you're being a touch edgy about this. The OP isn't saying she has a problem with the women or her condition, nor is she saying she was swearing on purpose. We KNOW she can't help it. And to compair this to a quadraplegic is silly, tt's totally different.

I don't care how old my child is, I would not want anybody swearing at me or my dd. Condition or no condition. What then happens if my dd picks up on it and starts running round shouting c* at the top of her voice? Sorry but I'd be mortified. I don't want my child learning and using these words, at least until she's old enough to know them but not use them.

moston · 30/11/2008 17:59

of course she shouldn't be working in a shop serving customers.

It's a shame she has a disability but there are jobs she will be suited to and customer facing is not one of those. And I can't believe that disability discrimination would go to that extreme to protect her. I am rubbish at maths, I have a blindness would it be discrimination to stop me being a NASA scientist?

moston · 30/11/2008 18:00

PC-nonsense from babymilk I see

racmac · 30/11/2008 18:00

Im actually quite interested to know a bit more - like why do tourettes (Im presuming thats what it was) swear? Why do they come out with those particular words and not "nice" ones ?
