this woman, i am supposed to work with has barly been there in 6 years!

don't you think it's a bit out of order from the same employer to have to cover all that for 1 person?

Her prerogative and none of your business.

WilfSell · 21/09/2008 21:35

ethanchristopher, if your uncle loses all his 4 talented, experienced, trained workers, he's also fucked isn't he?

Better to allow and prepare for somehow the inevitable human choice to have children...

LittleMyDancing · 21/09/2008 21:36

why would your uncle's business fail if his employees all got pregnant, ethanchristopher?

the government refunds more than 100% of statutory maternity pay to small businesses, so he won't be out of pocket. He'd have to get people trained to do those jobs, but if his employees quit he'd have to do that too, right?

A business that fails because someone goes on ML is not a viable business.

bodybag · 21/09/2008 21:36

ec why did he just employ young woman?

OP posts:
pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 21:36

Yes but Quattro, that is not the fault of the woman who chooses to have more than the standard issue of children. Maybe bodybag should take it up with the Government.

hecate · 21/09/2008 21:37

It's still between her and her employer.

YOUR problem is between you and your employer. If you feel that your workload is unreasonable, or your conditions are unfair, take that up with your employer. But it's not the fault of, or problem of, the woman who is exercising her human right to have children and her legal right to take maternity leave.

now as an ex employer (small business) I know how crippling stuff like this can be for a small business, but I still say that you are looking in the wrong direction re this issue. Take your problems with your workload to your boss. If you are being asked to do things that are unreasonable, or not in your contract, that is down to your employer, not your colleague. It's not her problem how your employer manages the business.

WilfSell · 21/09/2008 21:39

bodybag, 'because it would have been illegal to discriminate against young women' will be the answer you are looking for, you arse.

naturalblonde · 21/09/2008 21:40

I see your point, as an employer, it costs a fortune, often we can't claim back mat pay, and then we have to find a temp staff member to cover.

Imagine a comany with only 5 employees, someone going on mat leave means the workforce is 20% down. There are cases where that hads been enough to men the company closes down, meaning 5 people are out of work.

I know it's her right to have children and take mat leave/pay but I can see the OP's point. And I understand why some employers don't want to hire women of child bearing age. Not saying it's right, but from a financial POV, it makes more sense not to.

Althogh as I'm on mat leave at the moment I can't complain too much.

Quattrocento · 21/09/2008 21:40

I acknowledge it is not the fault of the woman on ML and that anyone is entitled to have 2, 4, 6 maternity leaves. But the reality of many of these happy events is extra work for workmates. And it is certainly NOT the fault of the workmates who are getting extra work for no extra pay.

bodybag · 21/09/2008 21:42

its my business because we all have to cover her sick leave to as she gets allday sickness in pg too.
there is no money to pay for more staff im afraid.

im not saying its not her legal right.
but morally i think its very wrong to do that to your workmates and 1 employer.
ffs go somwhere else.

OP posts:
WilfSell · 21/09/2008 21:43

If employers are not providing adequate cover for maternity leave it is THEIR problem. Contingency plans are very useful in this kind of situation. Small businesses could lose 20% of their workforce for many many reasons. I hope those who choose to discriminate against women because of this end up closed down and with big fines because it is ILLEGAL. That would be a bit of a blow to productivity too wouldn't it?

ethanchristopher · 21/09/2008 21:44

wilfsef - i agree entirely, he was stupid to just employ women

littlemydancing - i didnt know that! he just complains all the time that if that happened he would lose all his money and go bust e.t.c

well in that case i think op is bu cause the employer wouldnt be out of pocket

naturalblonde · 21/09/2008 21:44

Littlemydancing, the govt doesn't refund mat pay to all companies. It depends on how much in NI contributions have been paid each month.

If you have alot of employees who all pay NI contributions then you cannot claim back MP.

pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 21:44

Tell you what, have another baby, then you can have some wonderful time off from work. Or is your conscience that good that you wouldn't dare let your workmates have to cover your maternity leave.

Tough titty lovely, it you don't like it, find another job. Nowt you can do, moaning won't change it.

MrsMattie · 21/09/2008 21:44

How dare she procreate! the bitch!

Get a grip.

WilfSell · 21/09/2008 21:44

You're a bloke aren't you bodybag?

bodybag · 21/09/2008 21:45

last time she was pg she had 4 yes 4 months off sick.
with sickness.
there is no money to replace her

OP posts:
ethanchristopher · 21/09/2008 21:45

sorry not stupid just to employ women

stupid just to employ them BECAUSE they are women

WilfSell · 21/09/2008 21:45

No ec, you are stupid: you have misunderstood me. He might just as easily lose 4 talented women for being an outdated, sexist, illegally discriminatory employer with poor maternity provision. Was what I actually meant.

LackaDAISYcal · 21/09/2008 21:46

If you don't like that fact that your employer won't get cover in, why don't you go somewhere else, ffs?

you sound like a nasty piece of work, you really do

pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 21:47

Liking the sisterhood on this thread. Lets all feel sorry for the wealthy employer who could well struggle if all his staff fall pregnant. Maybe women should revoke their right to vote as well.

pgwithnumber3 · 21/09/2008 21:48

{hmm} was to ethanchristopher.
