but AIBU to think that if you live in a council flat you shouldnt be able to afford a brand new land rover with personalised number plate and full leather interiour

its just so frustrating when we struggle to pay our rent and have a crappy car and a man living in the council flats opposite us can afford brand spanking new car

so aibu????????????????

Yes, yabu.

ethanchristopher · 21/09/2008 19:21

no yanbu

if they want to spend their money on something that nice then maybe they should earn their own money

Tortington · 21/09/2008 19:21

maybe he has a good job

Tortington · 21/09/2008 19:22

council doesn't mean unemployed

Tortington · 21/09/2008 19:22

maybe its a company car

potatofactory · 21/09/2008 19:22

No - bollocks are you! Something obviously up there. Never mind being PC - they could obviously afford not to use council housing.

  • it's fun saying it like it is!
twinkletwinklelittledy · 21/09/2008 19:23

praps its nicked

DanJARMouse · 21/09/2008 19:23

Probably bought on credit.

Just because he is in a council property doesnt mean he is piss poor. Things can change.

I would easily say 50% of the families on my HA estate could afford to live elsewhere, but they arent daft. They know this is a lovely place to live, and because its an assured tenancy there is no need to leave if you dont want to!

Yanda · 21/09/2008 19:26

yabu, what has it got to do with you? He could have saved for years for his dream car, he could have inherited some money or it could have been bought for him. He might have won to lottery. Also, how do you know he doesn't own his flat? Just because some of them are council flats it doesn't mean they all are.

messageinabottle · 21/09/2008 19:26

you do realise people can buy (with their own money and everything) council propery don't you?

or maybe he's a drug dealer

rofl

nickytwotimes · 21/09/2008 19:26

There are a few fancy cars round here, all of them owned by the council tenents. They all work, so why shouldn't they spend their money how they see fit? Don't make aassumptions. We like to spend money on our house, some people on clothes and others on cars.

hifi · 21/09/2008 19:30

you can get them for £500 a month.

benbon · 21/09/2008 19:31

yes i know you can buy council propertys but he doesnt own this property as the whole block is council owned. it probably is nicked...

i mean how much to brand new landrovers sell for?

about 3 times what a deposit on a house would be

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 21/09/2008 19:33

ffs, maybe he doesn't want to buy a house but wants to buy a fancy car?!

I don't understand people's interest in cars, but fgs it is their choice how they spend their money.

findtheriver · 21/09/2008 19:34

a brand new landrover with personalised number plate is gonna be pretty easy to trace then innit! He obviously didnt think about that when he parked up outside his council house!!

wahwah · 21/09/2008 19:35

So what makes you think he doesn't deserve housing and you do? Once you start to make up weird reasons why people aren't entitled to something, then it usually comes straight back at you. Unless he's breaking the law, then he can do what he wants and jealous neighbours will just have to put up with it.

coppertop · 21/09/2008 19:36

I didn't realise there was a clause in council house tenancy agreements that said "Thou shalt not have a new car".

Tortington · 21/09/2008 19:36

maybe he has a good job

but bad credit - can't buy a house and therefore choses to live in social housing through lack of options

however he can now aford a new car from his earnings - good for him

Yanda · 21/09/2008 19:36

Hang on a minute, my parents live in a council house. They have a brand new car, do you think they nicked it too? Should everyone who lives in council housing buy a clapped out banger so you can feel better about yourself and your life? Get your judgy pants off, you look alittle green.

Saturn74 · 21/09/2008 19:38

Jealousy is an unattractive trait.

benbon · 21/09/2008 19:46

i am bloody jealous wish i only had to pay £85 per week rent rather then the extorcionate £1100 per month. oh how the other half live!!!

i just think social housing should be for those that need it.(there is a lack of housing round here) and if you can afford a car that cost about £40,000 you dont need social housing.

OP posts:
SpookyMadMummy · 21/09/2008 19:47

YABU. We live in a council house and both DH and I work.
We don't have a new car, but last I knew in order to have or keep a council house there were no means tests

benbon · 21/09/2008 19:48

if your both working surely you can afford to pay for private housing

OP posts:
LazyLinePainterJane · 21/09/2008 19:49

YABU....though land rovers are a different story altogether

Twelvelegs · 21/09/2008 19:49

I know a woman who lived in social housing and paid for a breast job, ffs. It's for needy people not an easy ride paid for by others. If you can afford a new car give your cheap housing and rent a fucking house, that's what I say. And for those that think it's okay tell that to the woman with her two children living in a bedsit because there's a shortage of social housing.
