but AIBU to think that if you live in a council flat you shouldnt be able to afford a brand new land rover with personalised number plate and full leather interiour

its just so frustrating when we struggle to pay our rent and have a crappy car and a man living in the council flats opposite us can afford brand spanking new car

so aibu????????????????

hey expat - probably not much help to you - doubt you have Asda close to you - but they do a baccy "bayside" - 50g for £5.95 - it's blended one - but if your DH ever hasn't got access to the Eastern European one there's that one too (not found anywhere else that sells it yet)

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:44

mu hubby also smokes rollies, his inlaws get for him from holland- very cheap there

have feeling that family i was talking about also work for cash, as there is NO way they could afford to smoke

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 20:45

thanks, FAQ. not to worry, Radislav always keeps him well supplied. He's very organised and keeps his customers happy .

FAQ · 21/09/2008 20:46

that's ok - thought I@d mention it anyhow as I nearly fell off my chair doing my main Asda shop the other week browsing through all the baccies looking for the cheapest one and spotted it - thought it must have been a mistake.

.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 21/09/2008 20:50

Oh for God's sake. What a stupid post. I haven't got a pot to piss in and could never dream of affording a house. But my parents have bought me a car to get children to school.

People are so nosey and so judgemental, and so begrudging it would bring tears to your eyes sometimes.

Some people want other people to suffer. So that they can feel comfortable, or feel like they aren't quite the poorest level of society, I don't really understand it. But it's a nasty little character attribute.

Imnotok · 21/09/2008 21:01

If all you have to worry about in life is your neighbours new car then I envy you .

timewaster · 21/09/2008 21:02

Combustiblelemon you are getting on my tits. social housing is NOT subsidised. Infact a recent report from our social housing management commitee stated that council tenants in our area are paying millions into the governments pockets as an extra form of 'tax' income. (something to do with limitations on how they can use the revenue generated from social housing rents - so it ends up going to central government).
And FYI lots of council tenants work and pay rent. It is not free or subsidised - got it? Am sick of this kind of ignorance. If you want to get angry with someone blame thatcher.

lilysmummy2007 · 21/09/2008 21:02

YABVU, i live in a council flat which we just purchased, my neighbour who own his council flat has a great job and his partner also works, has a 2007 BMW, and she also has a fairly new car. he got his flat at the age of 21 when he was an unemployed student, but after 19 years, finishing uni and getting a well paid job, he was smart enough to keep hold of his council flat and then buy it for peanuts compared to what you would have to pay for a decent 3 bed flat these days, and my other neighbour downstairs drives a brand new lexus! i hate that some people are so judgemental that they automatically think someone who lives in a council flat is unemployed, sponging of the state, claiming benefits or is going to attack them for their mobile if they walk close to them. clearly you are just jealous

Janos · 21/09/2008 21:02

Hear hear NaughtiestGirl. Was about to post something similar but you've said it better than me.

Why on earth do some folk get sooo bothered about the minutae of other people's lives.

Live and let live! Gawd.

timewaster · 21/09/2008 21:03

By the way only got to 2nd page before began getting irate with combustiblelemon, so did not read through whole thread. Sorry if someone else had made any similar points.

geordieminx · 21/09/2008 21:04

I orginally wrote this - Anyone can buy a fancy car... its paying for it thats the problem.

But then thought - hang on a second...My mum lives in a council house, although she bought it 8 years ago (and is now mortgage free) They have a brand new bmw with a personal plate, conservatory and at least 4 holidays a year. People probably think exacltly the same about her. She was a single parent when she moved into that house 24 years ago - we had nowt - no furniture nothing. She has worked so hard to make things better, met her partner 12 years ago, who now has a great job - they can afford to move to a "nicer" area but they like the house, the neighbours and the area.

Whilst I agree that council housing should be for those who need it and there should be more checks in place to make sure the system isnt abused, thats a whole different debate.

You could be one of my mums neighbours (but arent as she doesnt live in a flat) so feck off and mind your own business.

Bitterness and jealousy only make you ugly on the inside and out.

knockedgymnast · 21/09/2008 21:04

Easy option...make yourself intentionally homeless, apply for 'social' housing and then you too can have your dream car!!

gabygirl · 21/09/2008 21:05

DH has 2 friends who had a flat each in Bermondsay. They moved in together and sublet their flats for several years - long enough to qualify for right to buy. Then they sold their flats and bought a house with the proceeds.

We had dinner with them a while back. They were talking about their latest holiday (Greece) and the massive renovations they're doing on their home. When they'd finished talking about that they went into a rant about scrounging immigrants. I had to excuse myself to go and stifle my screams of rage in the loo.

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 21:06

it's worth asking, FAQ, if they go home often .

fedupandisolated · 21/09/2008 21:08

ah - flaw in the intentionally homeless plan is they'll tell you to "sod off".

Janos · 21/09/2008 21:10

Yep, if you're intentionally homeless I think the council say "tough shit". That's how it works up here anyways.

Combustiblelemon · 21/09/2008 21:10

Timewaster, it is subsidised. Go and check what it costs to rent a 2 bed house at market rate, then look at the council rent charge for the same area. Rents may cover costs, but they do not resemble the real value of the property in any way.

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:11

Housing law - intentionally homeless - no help, if you have kids they give you 28 days in temporary accom

if still homeless either the s/s take the kids and you go on the streets/into single homeless a/c or you find an alternative

you would have to prove it

timewaster · 21/09/2008 21:17

I'm sorry CL but you are talking bollocks. Who is subsidising it exactly?
