but AIBU to think that if you live in a council flat you shouldnt be able to afford a brand new land rover with personalised number plate and full leather interiour

its just so frustrating when we struggle to pay our rent and have a crappy car and a man living in the council flats opposite us can afford brand spanking new car

so aibu????????????????

Twitching the net curtains is still alive and well, I see.

also, private renting sucks because it's never an assured tenancy.

you live most of your time wondering when you're going to be told you need to find somewhere else to live.

not fun.

The concept of social housing was to provide affordable quality accommodation, it was not intended purely for the homeless/those in housing need. And is still not.

Anyone can apply for social housing, priority is given for an number of different factors, and eventually depending one where you live and the housing stock available and the level of priority you are given you will be given an offer. Income is not considered a factor in the majority of councils, for good reason.

The councils and H/A's that run the estates know the devastation that will occur to the communities if people are uprooted because they earn too much.

You complete fail to understand social housing.

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:19

i see both sides of this - but sure i will get shouted at as well

the man might have brought his place from council, i live in an ex council estate, most of the houses donw my road are now privatly owned, so its possible he has brought it, and has earned /saved enough money from working and has brought himself a nice new car

on the other hand, some friends of friends live in a council houses, they are sooooooooooo much nicer than mine , they pay £350 less a month than me in rent (ours is mortgage) and they both smoke, have HUGE widescreen tv,have 2 children and yet neither of them work!!!

so yes it does piss me off that they scrounge of the state, some of my friends who work and have children would be better off if they didnt work, and lived off benifits, but they dont want to

there are 2 sides of every story, the goverment needs to stop unemployment benifit and then previde benifit/extra money to those who get off their arse and work, and help with rent etc

i have a friend who has 3 kids by 3 different dads, and has a 3bed house, she claims for everything she can and gets help with rent and council tax, and says she wont find a job as then she would be worse off - so again this pisses me off - if people want more than 2 children, they should pay for them theirselves

waits for rotten fruit to be thrown

all circumstances are different - there may be a reason why he has a nice car

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 20:20

'they pay £350 less a month than me in rent (ours is mortgage)'

you have an asset which those people don't.

in fact, an increasing number of people will never be able to have a mortgage.

so would you swap with them?

TequilaMockinBird · 21/09/2008 20:21

I live in a council house and have a lovely brand spanking new car parked outside!

I'm also a single parent and work from home a lot of the time so my neighbours probably think the same as you.

But, infact I work full time and it's a company car! I don't earn very much money at all really and certainly couldn't afford to buy my home.

So yes, YABU

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:23

in 2 years time they will be able to buy their council house at a reduced rate, so yes they will be much better off then me then

i do have an asset, but hubby and i work hard to keep roof over our heads

as i said i do see both sides, but it annoys me when some people twist the sysytem BUT thats not their fault - its the fault of the government

Tortington · 21/09/2008 20:23
misdee · 21/09/2008 20:25

i am not allowed to buy this place.

no right to buy on it.

i wouldnt anyway,

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:26

guess what also annoys OP is that the man must own his car if he has a private/personalised number plate - unlike a company car like yours tequilla

you have a company car as you work

lou031205 · 21/09/2008 20:28

I have friends who were in poorly paid jobs in overcrowded accomodation. She was pregnant, they lived seperately. They were housed initially on a dodgy estate in a flat, then transferred to a brand new 2 bed house.

Now, 8 years on, the man is a Regional Bank Manager. They still live in the HA house. But, they are allowed to, and probably could afford the cars you speak of.

FAQ · 21/09/2008 20:29

I'm sorry but I can't help but laugh people who say

"and they have their rent paid, council tax paid, have a TV and sky and they smoke"........like smoking is suddenly the worst thing a person living on benefits can do.

Some people may choose to have a takeaway once a month - I choose to smoke my rolies - cost roughly the same - depending on whether I have a bottle of wine to go with the takeaway or not.

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 20:29

most HAs have ended right to buy for all new tenants (which everyone becomes if the council transfers its housing stock to an HA) and many councils have put a moratorium on right to buy, which they can extend from now till the world ends.

many councils and HAs have also decreased the discounted rate, in some councils it's 10% under the market rate.

and people who don't work usually don't qualify for a mortgage.

TequilaMockinBird · 21/09/2008 20:29

I am allowed to put a private plate on the company car though (if I had one!!)

So maybe the plate was a gift from a family member? Or maybe his father was also called "John Freddy Smith" or whatever, and the plate has been passed on to him?

Not saying that this is the case of course, but I think the OP is being VU to make a judgment when the full story is not known.

fedupandisolated · 21/09/2008 20:35

Am awaiting council housing and a brand new car. The car is a lease car. On a nurses salary I can't afford to privately rent round here and I don't want to anyway - not enough security in the tenancy.

Don't earn enough to get a mortgage so no option but to have council housing. And I probably earn a good salary compared with many single parents.

YABU - you don't know the circumstances.

Ronaldinhio · 21/09/2008 20:35

FFS we both earn decent money and can't afford a mortgage.
I would do anything to be able to settle down and have a home for my kids rather than move from place to place as private tenants.
Given the way mortgages are currently being awarded we will never be able to afford one.

I say good luck to him and his fancy pants car and boo to you and your weird judgy ways!!

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:35

fruit

helps herself to a biccy

the people i was talking about smoke roughly 40 a day - cigs are about 5.50 a packet, so around £11 a day - thats £77 a week on fags!!!!

a hell of a lot of money for anyone, let alone a family which has kids and parents dont work

think OP will have to ask her neighbour about his car to ease her mind - as i said he may have brought his place and worked/saved hard for the car

imananny · 21/09/2008 20:37

pmsl - that was meant to say [ducks fruit]

FAQ · 21/09/2008 20:39

iamananny - I spend roughly £6.50 a week on my smoking - on a bad day I probably don't smoke that many less than the people you talk of

Plonker · 21/09/2008 20:40

You say "i just think social housing should be for those that need it.(there is a lack of housing round here) and if you can afford a car that cost about £40,000 you dont need social housing."

How do you know that he has bought the car?
How do you know that its not a company car?
How do you know that its not his cousins car and his cousin has gone away for a month and so has lent it to him?
How do you know that he hasn't just secured himself a fabby job/won the lottery and is just waiting for the solicitor to tie up the loose ends before he gets his new home>

The point is, how do you know anything about him?

And so what if he has bought it outright. People in council houses can buy things you know!

YABU. And very judgemental.

FAQ · 21/09/2008 20:40

was wondering what a duff link saying "fruit" was all about

expatinscotland · 21/09/2008 20:41

we're not on benefits, but DH smokes rollies and they cost him about £6/week.

he gets the baccy from an Eastern European colleague, a fiver for a 50gm pouch, and the skins and filters his folks pick up in bulk from a huge boot sale.
