but AIBU to think that if you live in a council flat you shouldnt be able to afford a brand new land rover with personalised number plate and full leather interiour

its just so frustrating when we struggle to pay our rent and have a crappy car and a man living in the council flats opposite us can afford brand spanking new car

so aibu????????????????

I'm sorry CL but you are talking bollocks. Who is subsidising it exactly?

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:18

I mean you would have to prove that you could no longer afford it, that you hadn't got a mortgage out of your price range, knew you weren't about to lose a job before you got the mortgage etc

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:19

CL - the council don't have mortgages to pay off,

why do you thinking private companies are so keen to take over housing stock?

It's subsidised because the state aren't charging the going rate, it's done as a social benefit. The people who are living there don't have to pay a realistic rent.

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:28

you are making me giggle stayfrosty!

and your second post is bang on

noonki · 21/09/2008 21:29

Combustiblelemon - who subsidises housing assocations? -

Megglevache · 21/09/2008 21:30

Do you know all of their business? For all you know it could have been a gift? Prize?

Tortington · 21/09/2008 21:30

if a HA takes over council stock, they can mortgage the council houses - who pays you ask

the tenants. through their rent.

how to HA's do this? the tenants vote for it becuase councils are not allowed to raise reenue this way.

this is why most councils have arms length companies to do this. This way they can raise the revenue and impliment decent homes standards - y'know a kitchen with cupboards that actually function as such.

jealously is a horrible colour!!

timewaster · 21/09/2008 21:38

'a realistic rate' = 'a piss-take rate'
You are being ripped off - we are not ripping you off.

smeeinit · 21/09/2008 21:45

o my goodness!
what a ridiculous and short sighted view..

i live in a council house and have done all my adult life, i have a massive widescreen t.v,a wii,top of the range surround sound,a pool in my garden, and buy lots and lots of designer clothing and handbags etc i also have a nice 53 reg car and am going to be soon buying a little sports car to go with it......
i proberly could afford a mortgage but not in the area i currently live in.
ive been a single mum for 11years and was left with nearly 30k worth of debt when my delightfull exh left me with 2 small children.
ive always worked full time and have paid off all the debt.with not a penny from the state or my exh.
i continue to work full time and now earn a good wage.
wtf i do with MY money is my buisness and couldnt care a shit what my neighbours, who incidently are all privatly owned, think.
i pay my rent justa s im sure your neighbours do.
keep your nose out and stop the specualtion or go round and knock and ask how they can afford a nice new car!!!

Combustiblelemon · 21/09/2008 21:48

I don't rent. I'm not saying that they should charge the market rate, I'm just saying that the fact that they don't means that it is a benefit. Some people need the help. Some people don't. If we had a larger stock of social housing it wouldn't be an issue- everyone who needed one could have one. As it is, there is greater demand than supply, and I think that it is worth asking if people really need the help of reduced rents- because if they don't there are many on waiting lists and in B&Bs who do.

timewaster · 21/09/2008 22:02

it is not a 'benefit'.
it is not a 'benefit'.
it is not a 'benefit'.

Combustiblelemon · 21/09/2008 22:12

What is it then? Not what was it intended to be, what it is now.

ShyBaby · 21/09/2008 22:17

Ok im asking:

What would people like council tenants to do?

I have spent thousands on this house. Yes, more fool me, its not mine, I am wasting my money.

If I left this house the way it was when I moved in it would be a miserable life. Damp, filthy etc.

But if I do it up nicely I get slagged off for that too. My garden is generally neat, has flowers. (wow) I paid for my house to be painted (is it called roughcast?) because it looked shitty. I have outdoor lights fitted. I had a fence put up in place of the hedge that grew right across my front window. I had my bad garden done, slabbed, steps built, a shed put up, turfed.

From the outside it looks very nice indeed. But it has taken me 8 years to get it looking so good. On my own, I will never afford a mortgage. I will also lose any money I ever put into this house.

Should council houses look like shit, because thats what we expect..then we can slate the tenants for being lazy scrubbers?

Or should they look nice, so we can slate the tenants for obviously having money they shouldnt?

Is it not a good thing that many council tenants look after their houses and bring them up to a standard that quite frankly, the council wont? Every time the council comes in here to do a repair they trash something...costing me more than it would for the repair tbh.

What do you want!!??

Janos · 21/09/2008 22:21

Damned whatever you do ShyBaby.

I'm amazed people aren't making themselves homeless to get these council properties actually. Seeing as how they're such a marvellous deal and all.

cheesesarnie · 21/09/2008 22:23

i have all this to come!were on council list, going from private rent.must remember not to buy children new shoes if we ever get a council house as might be accused os splashing cash.

ShyBaby · 21/09/2008 22:25

Im very tempted to put up my pic of my free council kitchen again, last time I did it the thread went rather quiet.

Combustiblelemon · 21/09/2008 22:25

Personally? I want rent controlled housing with long term secure leases. This can be done on a private basis. As has been pointed out, council houses are often in bad condition. I want houses where the rents are more realistic but yearly rises are set within fair limits, and people don't need to worry about being kicked out with two months notice. There isn't enough social housing stock to meet demand, and the government has screwed private renters by failing to provide regulation/protection.

ShyBaby · 21/09/2008 22:26

New shoes? Taking the piss if you ask me. Disgraceful behaviour.

smeeinit · 21/09/2008 22:28

do it shybaby,do it....im wanna see your free kitchen!!!!!!
