AIBU to smuggle bottles of water and Maltesers into the cinema tomorrow?

...rather than paying £400 for popcorn and cokes at the counter. Everyone smuggles right?

There is a big sign I noticed last time I went stating a zero tolerance for taking stuff in that you didn't buy there. I think they have a damn cheek and if their prices were at least reasonable not £3.40 for a popcorn I would buy it there.

No one's looking in my massive handbag without a fight but they seriously aren't going to ask me are they?

I am taking DS and his mates for this birthday treat, don't REALLY want to have to scuffle with the girl on the door!!!

I wish they would stop having popcorn-full stop.It gives a horrible sickly smell if too many people have it is a small space.

changeforthebetter · 18/03/2012 07:43

I take cheese sandwiches, fruit, water, oat biscuits and my iPod. I buy one box of small popcorn and share it out between two kids. Presume the sight of me with the popcorn dissuades them from checking. If they ate nachos, ice cream and popcorn for two hours they would vomit all over the cinema!

YANBU. The prices for food are a joke. If they want to stop people bringing their own, then they should change reasonable prices.

I've never smuggled as DC too young to go atm. I will smuggle when the time comes though!

wellwisher · 18/03/2012 08:19

YANBU. Cinema popcorn is rank anyway - I'd take a bag of Butterkist from the supermarket, and my own drinks. Cineworld have a right cheek trying to ban people bringing their own!

45Sez · 21/03/2012 11:11

Terrible that Cineworld are allowed to search and confiscate the bags of Teenagers for sweets or snacks being sneaked in!How are they expected to pay the entry fee to see the film and the pay the extortionate prices for popcorn, drinks @ sweets etc.I say lower the prices or stop
Searching and confiscating their bags!I left a message on Cineworld on Facebook! They didn't like it,they removed it and have blocked me!![sadUnbelievable!! If you have any experiences of this leave you're message!

juneybean · 21/03/2012 11:21

Cineworld are robbing bastards anyways, their ticket prices have just jumped from £4.95 for a student to £6.00

MissFaversham · 21/03/2012 11:32

YANBU these places are a total rip off. I ALWAYS bring in outside stuff. If they weren't so ridiculously greedy this wouldn't have to happen. The mere thought of the prices in these places make steam shoot out of my ears Angry

whackamole · 21/03/2012 11:39

YANBU.

How they have the balls to charge over £2 for a small bottle of water is beyond me. We used to go to the shop next door and shove it in my handbag before we went - OH of course is an eejit and would always 'forget' and end up paying double the price...

HintofBream · 21/03/2012 11:47

CinemaCity in Norwich is very civilised. Nice bar/cafe, you are encouraged to take your wine in and holders are provided on the seats for your glass. Not sure how they would feel about full scale picnics but they are very laid back so probably would not mind at all. Quiet unwrappers and munchers obviously appreciated by others in the audience.

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 21/03/2012 11:48

If we're not going for dinner before the cinema I totally would smuggle supermarket popcorn and a couple of bottles of water - the prices in the cinema shop are extortionate.
However I have found several places that do cinema meal deals e.g. a decent burger joint - ?16 each for proper burger, fries and fizzy drink which includes the cinema ticket (normally about ?8 on it's own).
So a night at the cinema including dinner for myself and my DD is ?32 (about £27 - plus we are both too full to even think of eating any crap during the film (mind you I wouldn't consider the dinner relatively healthy but at least I don't have to cook!)
Beside another cinema I go to is an Italian place that does pizza and a soft drink for ?17 a head.
The deals are usually only Mon to Thurs though.

Floggingmolly · 21/03/2012 13:50

I do this all the time. You can do it quite openly in Ireland (or could when I last lived there); I couldn't believe the complete extortion when going to the cinema here for the first time, and it's invariably crap anyway. Go for it!

Elabella1401 · 21/03/2012 13:58

I always do this as a point of principle. I have explained it to my kids and they agree. We now stop at the supermarket on the way and they buy their sweets/drinks.

It was my daughter's birthday a couple of months back and she wanted to take 5 friends to the cinema. I bought carton drinks & several bags of sweets from the Supermarket then took a wad of the paper bags from the sweet section in the cinema and divvied them all up! If they think I am paying £5 each for a few gummy sweets then they need to seriously re-think their business plan!

However, I checked Cineworld's terms & conditions recently and it still states that you are not allowed to take in your own stuff. They shouldn't be able to get away with it! Grrrr.

Kikithecat · 21/03/2012 13:58

I always do. I've never tried to hide it either. Never saw a sign saying you couldn't do this.

RuleBritannia · 21/03/2012 14:00

Why must people eat and / or drink while watching a film? I went with a friend to see The King's Speech when it was on in Esher but we had nothing to eat or drink. We saw the popcorn prices (not that we would have bought any) so I know what you are talking about.

OneHandFlapping · 21/03/2012 14:09

I went with DH to one of the Curzons in Bloomsbury a while back. You could buy beer in the foyer, and take it in and drink it while you watched the film. It was very civilised.

At the big chains we always smuggle - haven't descended to bringing in our own beer though.

5madthings · 21/03/2012 14:12

yanbu at all we always take snacks, with 4 kids to take to the cinema (5 once dd is old enough) its bloody expensive enough, so ds4 who has one of those bags that has a lead attached! has them in his bag, they never check that!

tbh i dont think they check at all in norwich and cinema city is nice, for grown ups, i havent taken the boys there and when i go there i would buy something as its nice and not too expensive, but for the likes of the odeon etc always take my own!

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 21/03/2012 17:41

HintofBream, 5madthings Love Cinema City too, but we usually go to the scuzzy Hollywood in Anglia Square! There is litter all over the floor from the popcorn they sell. I think if cinemas are going to sell snacks they should employ people to clear up the mess or provide rubbish bins for people to tidy up their own mess!
didn't realise this was an old threa until someone upthread mentioned Woollies! Great subject though!

45Sez · 21/03/2012 20:27

Cineworld still search & confiscate bags off teenagers! They expect to force them to pay their extortionate prices!Sad

notaniphoneownerjustabadtypist · 21/03/2012 20:33

Their argument is that they don't make any profits on tickets so they need to sell snacks & drinks to make a profit. OR are they just being greedy/creating a captive audience?

Fecklessdizzy · 21/03/2012 20:38

Massive rip off ... We always take our own stuff!

In 2008?

I'd never have noticed something was amiss if a pp hadn't mentioned Woolies i.e. Woolworths

womaninatightspot · 22/06/2022 23:56

I bring stuff in. Just not in a carrier bag. TBH I've never been stopped or asked but I am subtle about it.
