AIBU to smuggle bottles of water and Maltesers into the cinema tomorrow?

...rather than paying £400 for popcorn and cokes at the counter. Everyone smuggles right?

There is a big sign I noticed last time I went stating a zero tolerance for taking stuff in that you didn't buy there. I think they have a damn cheek and if their prices were at least reasonable not £3.40 for a popcorn I would buy it there.

No one's looking in my massive handbag without a fight but they seriously aren't going to ask me are they?

I am taking DS and his mates for this birthday treat, don't REALLY want to have to scuffle with the girl on the door!!!

WhispersOfWickedness · 17/03/2012 21:00

I was alerted to this being a 4 year old thread when I read one of the posts about someone buying their snacks in Woolies! Grin and Sad!

hedwig2001 · 17/03/2012 21:26

I always take a small rucksack with me to the cinema. Containing: bottled water & homemade popcorn divided into freezer bags. Not been stopped.
Yet!!

hedwig2001 · 17/03/2012 21:29

I did the same for DS birhday treat with his friends.

shagmundfreud · 17/03/2012 21:46

YANBU

When I go I take a RUCKSACK full of home made popcorn with me. Grin

PinkPepper · 17/03/2012 21:51

Odeons policy is to allow you to take food in, as long as it's not hot food i.e pizza or mcdonalds (which people want to do surprisingly often!)

They don't advertise it because they obviously make a lot from food & drink sales but staff wouldn't even notice and people pop out to the tesco over the road mid film sometimes.

exoticfruits · 17/03/2012 22:05

I always took my own in when the DCs were small-a few sweets and boxed drinks. I had them in my handbag. There is no way I would waste money on the cinema ones- and it saved any arguments about buying them if I could say 'we already have some'.
Now that I go on my own I don't need any. The amounts are ridiculous anyway-who wants a bucket of popcorn?
I don't care what the policy is-I would still do it.

Deadsouls · 17/03/2012 22:10

YANBU - it's really disgusting that they charge the prices that they do. I always always take my own stuff, no way am I being a sucker and paying ridiculous sums of money

sheepgomeep · 17/03/2012 22:19

4 Year Old Thread

Alerted to this by the mention of Woolies & popcorn only being £3.40 Grin

wentfrom3to6 · 17/03/2012 22:27

I didn't notice how old this thread was until someone said they went to woolies!

I always take bottles of water and sweets in my bag or DS pockets. I do buy popcorn sometimes. Never had any problems.

2rebecca · 17/03/2012 22:29

We make popcorn and smuggle it in in bags.

EvenBetter · 17/03/2012 23:25

I smuggle in homemade popcorn and my mum brings the chocolates and drinks :o
I don't get ripped off any other time, it's not going to happen in the cinema. I don't care if they're only trying to make money, not my problem. I could much easier watch the film online so they should be grateful to have anyone paying £7000000 per ticket.

Casmama · 17/03/2012 23:41

How does a four year old thread end up being resurrected? If it was someone searching for advice and then they forget it's an old thread and post then fair enough but cinema snacks????

odeon nachos are minging. Made the mistake of buying some once.. never again, I felt sick right through the film

blonderthanred · 17/03/2012 23:51

YABU if you are going to a small, independent cinema that sells tickets for £2 and popcorn for £1. But people still do. Cunts.

MissMogwi · 18/03/2012 00:44

I always do this. I sometimes buy massively overpriced popcorn, but always smuggle drinks and sweets in.

It's all part of the experience Grin

juneybean · 18/03/2012 00:54

WTF I was reading this and came across a local MNers old username and wondered if she had reverted back 'til I saw the date!

emmanana · 18/03/2012 01:36

Totally agree with you about the rip-off prices (The cost of the raw popcorn to fill a large bucket c£4 is less than the cost of the bucket (aprox 25p), but regarding the bag search, they cannot force you to open your bag, but if you don't they have the right to refuse you entry. I work in a central London Theatre, and all bags are searched (not for food, but for suspicious devices/recording equipment etc) If anyone refuses they are not allowed in. End of.
We had one woman kick up a stink, and when her bag was searched, she had 3 kittens in there. (Apparently the Mother cat wouldn't/couldn't feed them, so she was feeding them hourly with a dropper, and planned to do so during the 3 hour show. Yes she was refused admittance....

marcopront · 18/03/2012 02:44

Disclaimer : I don't live in the UK.

If I go to the cinema they always search your bag and will confiscate food. They also have a break half way through the film, so you can go and buy snacks and will deliver to you during the film.
There is also one screen where they have reclining seats. It's great.

Boomerwang · 18/03/2012 03:09

It might be a 4 year old thread but I never got to have MY SAY! Grin

If the prices were reasonable then you'd BU for taking your own stuff, but the cost of snacks in the cinema are extortionate. Besides, have you tried to carry 4 of those huge drinks, 4 trays of nachos, 2 bags of sweets and 4 bags of popcorn all at once? (Day out with service users, not a piggy family!!) I always bought bottled fizzy pop and a bag of minstrels from the kiosk just outside the cinema (in a mall) and if it was appropriate for the service user, I'd get one small bag of popcorn inside the cinema.

They should be pleased that I didn't just fire up Utorrent and download their movie for free.
