When I see smokers with babies, I really want to yell at them...

Given the fact that smoking can increase the chance of cot death, breathing problems, glue ear and a whole host of other nasties (not to mention cancer) why is it that every time I go into town or for a walk in my local area I see 'parents' who think it is OK to smoke all over their children? It makes me want to yell very loudly!!!

soph, you are not oblivious and your op invited feedback, thus your argument does not hold up.
Fwiw, I don't like to see people pushing buggies with a fag in hand, but I don't know what kind of shit they might be dealing with, so I try not to judge. I am an ex-smoker and I used fags to help manage my depression. Smoking actually kept me going, at some expense to my physical health, but was preferable to the other self destructive behavior I had used in the past.

FAQ .. 'ave a chip, luv!

findtheriver · 05/09/2008 19:40

Actually having had time to reflect on this, I think the OP is being very unreasonable. Let the buggers smoke all over their babies if they want.

I love smoking. I don't smoke inside when my kids are around but I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with smoking outside when they are there (being careful not to blow it in their faces or flick hot ash all over them, naturally). WHY do you want to yell at people when you see them enjoying a fag outdoors in the company of their children? a) it is absolutely NONE of your business and b) what POSSIBLE harm do you think they are inflicting? You sound full of self-righteous and rather pointless anger.

PS Reading Desiderata's post with the Peter Ustinov quote has really cheered me up - what a brilliant take on life!

K999 · 05/09/2008 19:44

I smoke. I do it outside but the DCs can see. Yes, it is a bad example and NO I dont want them to smoke EVER but there are far worse things I could be doing....and since I last checked smoking was not illegal....

And of course, there is nothing better than a fag and a cold glass of Chardonnay once the buggers little darlings are in bed.

hf128219 · 05/09/2008 19:45

FFS - get a life.

Mercy · 05/09/2008 19:45

How can you smoke over a buggy with it affecting the baby/child?

If anything children in buggies are more likely to be breathing in car fumes.

I remember my friend's dd complaining about the smell of dog poo and traffic whenever she was in her buggy!

expatinscotland · 05/09/2008 19:45

Imagine being so angry and wound up all the time, though, at total strangers who are gong to do what they please.

Lots of things are sad in this world.

But anger takes so much emotion and is so negative, for the most part.

I just prefer not to be around folks who are so overwrought so much.

It's bad for the chi.

ScottishMummy · 05/09/2008 19:50

my parents and siblings all heavy smokers.i don't smoke.my earliest memory is walking to shop for benson&hedges with mum

smoking does not equate to bad parenting
it is (imo)smelly unhealthy costly but no definitive corelation between smoking and bad parenting

bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 19:52

Years ago people did'nt know any better. IMVHO it is very bad parenting to smoke around a child. Why????

expatinscotland · 05/09/2008 19:53

i hope your kids never grow up to make decisions or do things that you consider to be very bad parenting, bloomin'.

bellabelly · 05/09/2008 19:55

Don't know why????? - Tell us!

bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 19:56
Hmm
bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 19:57

Do what you want you will anyway.

K999 · 05/09/2008 19:57

oh FFS - smoking does not equate to bad parenting!! what a load of bollocks!

expatinscotland · 05/09/2008 19:58

yes, most adults will do what htey want so long as it is legal.

i won't be smoking around my kids because i don't smoke.

but i also have better things to do than keep tabs on what others are doing and critique them about it.

spicemonster · 05/09/2008 19:59

ScottishMummy · 05/09/2008 20:03

smoking is an behavioural pattern that has well documented adverse heath effects.the action component of the behaviour has contraindications not the person

hell much as i dont like smoking it doesn't make one bad.nor does eating adukki beans make one virtuous

happily my friends include smokers and non smokers ,tee total and drinkers
