When I see smokers with babies, I really want to yell at them...

Given the fact that smoking can increase the chance of cot death, breathing problems, glue ear and a whole host of other nasties (not to mention cancer) why is it that every time I go into town or for a walk in my local area I see 'parents' who think it is OK to smoke all over their children? It makes me want to yell very loudly!!!

you should spend less time being self righteous

Do you weave lentils?

Sophrosyne1 · 05/09/2008 18:48

Hmm, I don't remember saying I had a problem with people smoking. I have a problem with them blowing smoke all over their buggy, toddler or small child. Being a teacher and having taught 6 year olds whose clothes, hair and school books reek of fags, I feel this is warranted.

Addiction may well be a problem for these people but they can keep their unhealthy, addictive habit away from their children - can't they?

Agree wholeheartdly.

children who are smoked over are in danger. It may not be immediate but could in effect be life limiting. Would you feed you're kids something that has been proved to give them cancer?[hmm}

spicemonster · 05/09/2008 18:50

I was being deliberately provocative. As I suspect the OP was. Irritating isn't it? One could almost say troll-like ...

expatinscotland · 05/09/2008 18:51

NB: MNHQ, can we please get rid of the AIBU board?

tamarto · 05/09/2008 18:51

Do they bend down specifically to blow the smoke al over the toddler or small child? If so YANBU somehow i doubt it though.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 05/09/2008 18:51

i smoke when im with my kids when i am outside. and the smoke is blowing away from them.

would you rather me do it inside my home with them there? and all the windows closed so that you cannot smell it?

or are you expecting people to say that you should have some right to tell me what i can do in front of my children?

aibu to think that people should not drink when they are with their children? yes i probably am and so are you on this one.

expatinscotland · 05/09/2008 18:51

Yes, I would agree, spicemonster. An increasingly common occurance round here .

FAQ · 05/09/2008 18:53

bloomingfedup - has been proved to increase their risk of getting cancer you mean.

If a parent who smokes is in full charge of their DC 24hrs a day 7 days a week how are they supposed to keep their habit "away" from their cchildren.

Surely in these circumstances it's better that they smoke outside than sit in the house "blowing smoke at their children"

bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 18:54

FAQ

Smoke outside in the garden.

FAQ · 05/09/2008 18:55

ermm - I do when I'm at home - but if I'm out and about in town (as I regularly am) then I smoke then too - and my DC often come out into the garden with me......as it's safer than leaving DS3 on his own to fall off the table/piano/chair/window sill

findtheriver · 05/09/2008 18:55

Possibly unreasonable to hate smokers as a group. Entirely reasonable to think it's disgusting that anyone smokes around ANYONE else, not just children. It's a fucking disgusting habit. If you're an addict, smoke on your own - don't inflict it on others, especially helpless babies - and get help.

francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2008 18:57

lol at tomarto

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 05/09/2008 18:57

yes i do that! i never smoke inside my house but what is the difference in smoking outside in my yard and having a quick one while walking to the park?

unless of course you think that i should leave my children unattended in my house while i go outside to smoke there is no difference at all.

francagoestohollywood · 05/09/2008 18:58

tamarto

bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 18:59

I think if you do not feel happy leaving your kids in the house while you go outside to have a smoke - then get help to stop.

If your kids are with you - you are MAKING them inhale posion.

tamarto · 05/09/2008 19:01

bloomingfedup, no more so than when we take our children near roads with cars on, exhausts are nearer to toddler height than most mums are.

FAQ · 05/09/2008 19:01

no - because right now I'm not "strong" enough in myself to try and stop - having almost all my adult life suffered from one addiction or another IMO smoking is the least damaging of the ones I've had.

Desiderata · 05/09/2008 19:02

... whenever I see a mother with a fat arse, I really want to yell at them.

Equally as unreasonable, in the great scheme of things, wouldn't you say?

Live and let live, Soph. Worse things go on in the world.

FAQ · 05/09/2008 19:03

very true tamarto - and no less toxic (increase the risk of brain damage and the risks of suffering from cancer)

bloomingfedup · 05/09/2008 19:03

Car fumes can't be avoided. Excuses, excuses. Really.

spicemonster · 05/09/2008 19:04

yawn

This has become like the 'there was someone that didn't have a child parked in the parent and child parking bay' threads. Shrill. And very fucking dull.

I think everyone knows that an awful lot of people disapprove of smokers with children. I'm sure your pursed lips haven't escaped their notice.

I don't particularly like people who spend their lives so focused on other people's shortcomings they fail to notice their own but that's not terribly interesting to anyone but me so I don't start threads about it.

FrockHorror · 05/09/2008 19:04

Well if this thread is anything to go by, I'm surprised I've not had a knock on the door from SS seeing as I FF and smoke (although not at the same time )
