in changing my ds on a bench in a shopping centre??

If i am please do tell me

Basically we were sat on a bench in a shopping centre eating our lunch. ds is very particular and won't have anything dirty on. He noticed butter on his clothes and started pulling at them and getting quite upset so i undressed him. I thought as he was undressed anyway i might aswell change his nappy before putting a new outfit on. The woman next to me is tutting. So i said have you got a problem? Of course she said no but it was obvious she did have a problem.

So was i wrong? Or was she wrong?

oooh i have another question. say you were in a restaurant/cafe with no changing facilities and you were the only people in there. would it be ok to do what someones NCT group did and change a wee only nappy there or should you go to the toilet and do it on the floor?

ladym - so what is the difference of asking "where shall i change ds' nappy" and you telling me that you would like me to di in the bathroom to "is it ok if i change ds' nappy here" and you saying actually could you do it in the bathroom. sorry about the questions just trying to plan should i make a new friend and not know where they routinely change nappies. not had this yet cos i've always seen where they do it before i've needed to change ds.

I wouldn't have gone in there if there wasn't any facilities. Already said I was useless at changing on knee/standing and hell would have frozen before I laid ds on a toilet floor.

Is that enough for now??

There's no difference, just ask your friend what she prefers. Its probably just me being a bit sensitive but its how I feel.

wornoutwaitress I wish I had the space to change Tink in the bathroom or on a changing table in "her room"!

Woollymummy you'd get your mat out rather than having your LO stand up when s/he would then be lying on a surface with everything on show?

Oh I would definately have changed my son on the bench. Babies and toddlers are an exception and should be treated as such. It's not as though an adult wees in a nappy and needs changing- they can just go to a toilet. With limited facilities, why should a baby have to sit in their own piss? It's only a wee wee nappy FGS. Anyone who tuts should get over it.

right so do we agree that nappy changing etiquette is if a bench is empty it is ok, if the floor is wet then it is ok to use a bench that is not empty as long as there isn't another one.

now just need people to decide on the empty restaurant and bus

When ds was small I lived in a 3bed terrace house, Tinkerbellesmum, it was hardly palatial!! Your point is......?

Hm, i probably sounded right callous before....what I meany was if I was in our local shopping centre (not actually v local, but our nearest) the floor is spotless and the benches are not cool to get stuff on, so I would think the floor is fine. Outside or inside I would use a mat always, to protect the floor and the bottom. If there is a bit of grass I would use that, if no grass then I change DD standing up, she is v good at staying still throughout, and DS who is tiny fits on my coat. Today DD managed to hold on from 11 am to 3.30 and we didn't have any access to a potty, so her nappy was dry until we managed to get on the bus and then when I checked she was soaking, so I did a quick standing up change on the bus, the old lady behind me actualy verbally egged me on and was obviously impressed that I hadn't made her sit on the nappy which was soaking wet. Comfort is always my highest priority, which is why I wouldn't wait until a "suitable" changing area presented itself, nor would I protentially mess up a public bench. Always carry your mat.

LOL a 3 bed terrace! I live in a small flat. I don't have room in my bathroom to do anything but walk in and I don't have a room for using as a changing room! So yes, to me a three bed terrace with room to change in the bathroom or a bedroom sounds huge!

i had to laugh, at the weekend, left the beach - sat on a bench to eat icecream, dh suggested he change out of his swimming trunks into his shorts - on the bench!
