Shocked that no one helped the girl on the train

14 year old SA in trained

I am being unreasonable in think people need to stop being so absorbed on their phones whilst out in public. It seems no one helpped this child whilst she was being raped because they were too busy on their phones.

Autistic girl, 14, 'sexually assaulted on train by Afghan migrants'

Baryalai Rahimi, 25, and Mirebadurahman Sadat, 29, are said to have spotted the runaway teenager at a station in rural Kent before following her onto the London-bound train on February 5.

The rape happened in the train toilets. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people not to have been aware of it.

I think it's very unreasonable.
Jurors were shown CCTV footage showing Rahimi brush past several commuters as he led the girl to a toilet cubicle, where she was allegedly raped three times.

No one thought it was odd that a man was taking an unrelated young girl into the toilet? There aren't many young Afghan girls wandering around, so I'm presuming they could tell as she wasn't of the same ethnicity.

They were molesting her before then:
The girl said Rahimi asked her to sit on his lap five minutes into the train journey. Asked why she did so, she replied: 'I don't know. It's a bit hard for me to say no to men. He's bigger than me, stronger, and I can't do anything"
She said Rahimi kissed and sexually assaulted her while she sat on his lap, adding: 'He didn't ask if he could touch me or kiss me"

Would you be surprised to see two men with an unrelated girl sitting on one of the men's lap?

The girl said when Rahimi suggested going to the toilet, 'I was trying to tell him no', and described becoming upset during the alleged assault because it 'really, really hurt'.

Surely her distress would be visible to anyone when she's frightened and in severe pain?

I can understand people being frightened of a couple of thugs who think they can get away with assaulting a child in full view of witnesses. But surely someone could have approached the victim and asked if she was all right? She obviously wasn't all right, but that could have given her a chance to get away from the attackers.

@Ohhh1

YABU.

Of course it's dreadful what happened, but it's ridiculous to blame the passengers on the train. How on earth were they meant to know what was going on? Confused

When I'm on a train, I have my music in my ears, and a book or magazine in my hand ... I'm not looking around to see if everyone's OK.
The girl was 14. Where were her parents? Why are you not focussing your anger on them? Or (as some posters have said,) the rapists!

Your post is laden with prejudice

Ministry of Justice statistics state Afghani men 3-7 times more likely to commit sex crimes than white Brits. Prejudice, aye?

Can you link your stats? Because that's what I've read.

YANBU but then when I'm on a train I don't have my nose in a phone as I tend to look out the window or vaguely read a book. What I do do is notice my fellow passengers, maybe even chat to them a bit if they're that sort..

If I was seated nearby I would definitely have noticed the inappropriate behaviour and politely intervened. Possibly this may have threatened my safety but that's how I am.

If my efforts didn't work then I would have been a bit more vocal until some of the other passengers felt moved enough out of their little bubbles to add to my voice. I would have urged someone to get a member of staff too.

Some of those passengers will have noted what was going on but didn't do anything and shame on us all for excusing that.

There's a huge difference between 3 times more likely and 7 times more likely, why is the statistic so imprecise? That discrepancy makes the statistic almost pointless, really.

Also, they're "3-7 times" (again, a huge difference in extremes there) more likely to be convicted than white men. That doesn't mean they commit 3-7 times more crimes. A refugee is far more likely to be reported in the first place than a white man, and then far more likely to be convicted as well. That could easily account for the difference.

She boarded the train with them so how are the other passengers supposed to know shes unrelated?

Perhaps if they'd looked closely they would have seen she was scared, but perhaps she didnt appear outwardly scared. She herself says shes good at hiding discomfort. Perhaps if theyd studied the situation they would have seen the men were older but its not unreasonable to not study every other group of passengers

The other passengers would have just seen 2 people walk passed, they wouldnt have necessarily seen him lead her to the toilet. They could have been walking to a nearby carriage

So you think that every Afghan male is a rapist? So are a significant number of indigenous British men.

Presumably the variation may be attributed at least in part to the reluctance of the relevant authorities in disclosing the data. But hey if only 3 times then that’s ok then .

Can you link your stats? Because that's what I've read.

Age-standardized data from the Ministry of Justice (analyzed for 2020–2022) indicates that Afghan nationals in England and Wales are convicted of sexual offenses at approximately 7 times the rate of British nationals. This is lower than initial claims (such as figures citing 20 to 22 times higher rates, which relied on undercounted population baselines or unadjusted data.

There were 19 Afghan men convicted of sexual offences last year.

That's not enough of a sample size to make any deductions.

By contrast, 80,000 white men were arrested for sexual offences last year.

Yay another “white men rape too post”
I’m sure this is of great comfort to the 14 year old child raped by two late 20’s Afghan migrants.

Do you think it's the government's fault when white British men rape kids, too?

Because that happens a great deal more often than kids being raped by refugees. There will be hundreds more sex crimes committed by white British men than by Afghan refugees.

The Daily Mail wouldn't even bother reporting this case if the defendants were British, and if they did, they'd totally be blaming the victim. They only give a shit about women and girls when it gives them a chance to stir up racist reactions.

Don't be so obtuse.

Look at percentages rather than straight figures.

Who would you rather your daughter be alone on a train carriage with? A group or recent immigrants off a boat or a groupd of local boys. Ideally neither, both risky but realistically would anyone choose option 1?

You are unreasonable for reading the daily mail

Two nearly 30 year old Afghan Refugees raped a 14 year old child and this is what you are more bothered about.

I was the only passenger recently to step in when a young boy was being racially abused on the platform but I’m not sure I would have noticed once on the train unless sat next to the people involved . I was reading a book on my phone whilst on the train yesterday. I was aware of people walking past but I couldn’t tell you their age or gender .

Your comparison is hardly fair.

Why are the locals 'boys'?

I've been harassed by a group of 'local boys' when I was younger, it doesn't make it any more palatable.

That's only because there are less of them! The data is clear. Foreign nationals are significantly more likely to be sex offenders than British born males. Afghans top the table. Per capita they are 7 times more likely to be sex offenders.

Ask whatever AI or search engine you like, dig into the details, dispute exactly how much more likely they are to rape - but the reality is that they ARE more likely to rape.
