Shocked that no one helped the girl on the train

14 year old SA in trained

I am being unreasonable in think people need to stop being so absorbed on their phones whilst out in public. It seems no one helpped this child whilst she was being raped because they were too busy on their phones.

Autistic girl, 14, 'sexually assaulted on train by Afghan migrants'

Baryalai Rahimi, 25, and Mirebadurahman Sadat, 29, are said to have spotted the runaway teenager at a station in rural Kent before following her onto the London-bound train on February 5.

Would you say the same if they'd been staring out the window or deep in a book?

poor girl. Awful story and she would have been more vulnerable due to her autism.

LancashireButterPie · Yesterday 16:00

I'd have noticed.
I find it difficult to relax when travelling, I dont go on my phone and I stay vigilant.
I'm sure a lot of people would have stepped in if they'd seen something untoward.
Poor kid.

Everything is someone else’s fault, isn’t it? The men are responsible for this crime, not passengers.

More generally speaking I don’t blame people for not intervening. I’ve witnessed several uncomfortable situations on public transport in London and never stepped in. Too many people carrying weapons and staff turn a blind eye too. If you are brave/stupid enough to get involved this would be at great risk to your own personal safety. I’ve even witnessed the person who appears to be a victim turning on the person who has tried to help them before.

Haven't read the article but sadly I am not surprised. I have seen a couple of things recently that I have helped with, when plenty of other people have just stood around and done nothing.

I actually fell on the way to work this morning, 3 women walked right past me (one actually staring at me while I started to sit up and was looking and my palm, covered in blood). Thankfully, 3 builders who have been working on some flats nearby spotted me, ran over and helped. They actually sat me on some steps and one made me a cup of tea.

It is sad that many people nowadays just do not want to help.

I helped a young lady who was being abused by her partner verbally and physically, the police were involved and other public witnesses.

At the end she did not press any charges, made me and witnesses out to be a liar, defended her partner and they both harassed me with hate.

I am never helping anyone again in such a scenario unless the victim is vulnerable due to age (child / elderly) or due to a disability or if the victim is screaming for help and wants the help.

The rape happened in the train toilets. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people not to have been aware of it.

YABU because you made it seem like the passengers watched her being assaulted.

(Sorry, I’ve quoted you by mistake - I agree with your post)

I'm not sure why we are focusing on the passengers and not the rapists.

This.

Honestly, even just speaking from a purely observational perspective, there seem to be SO many of these crimes committed by asylum seekers. I see at least a few a week. Thats a lot for a supposedly small group of people.

Why do we not see the same committed by any other group? Chinese men? Nigerian men? Filipino men?

SiegfriedSassoon · Yesterday 16:08

Of they shouldn't have been in the country, absolute animals. But yeah, let's let them all in because white men rape too!

SpecialShark · Yesterday 16:09

TheLastSilverSaint · Yesterday 15:20

Do you think it's the government's fault when white British men rape kids, too?

Because that happens a great deal more often than kids being raped by refugees. There will be hundreds more sex crimes committed by white British men than by Afghan refugees.

The Daily Mail wouldn't even bother reporting this case if the defendants were British, and if they did, they'd totally be blaming the victim. They only give a shit about women and girls when it gives them a chance to stir up racist reactions.

What insufferable, disingenuous nonsense.

Indeed. Sick to death of it.

Cascadia · Yesterday 16:11

It's not clear to me what passengers paying attention would have seen. What is it you think they missed? The assault happened in the train toilet.

A lot of people just stare into space, or at their phones or books, and are unwilling to get involved, even if it means someone else gets harmed.

Last week on the train, a woman had to ask a group of four women to give up their seats for a heavily pregnant woman. The women had seen her and chosen not to get up. I’m sure someone will point out that the four of them might have had invisible disabilities, or raise some other familiar objection

Were you there? The defendant said that people were too busy on their phones to notice what was happening.

Who is the defendant?

I mean, what do you want people to be doing while they’re on the train? I either take a book or read a book on my phone on the Kindle app. I’m not going to sit for 2 hours on my way home from work on my own with nothing to do or read.

NovaF · Yesterday 16:17

I don't think anyone would pay attention to people walking past them on a train, and no one would know what was going on in the toilet. It is horrible what happened, she had no words to say no or ask for help, which also means no one could have helped her

They mean victim I think - interesting Freudian slip.

Goodness me, where do you live? Do you really see at least a few a week rapes committed?
I don’t think I want to know how you see them….unless of course you are talking BS…

What a breathtakingly stupid thing to say.
