To think he’s too old for her

I have 3 children, eldest is 17 and in 6th form. She is 18 in April.
She is quite a quiet and studious girl, good group of friends, she is learning to drive and works part time. I know she has had boys who she’s liked but there’s been no boyfriends that I have known of.
About a month ago she went out to a pub and saw friends from the year above, who work together and who were out with their colleagues. One of these colleagues started chatting to my daughter and they hit it off. He is 27.
They have been somewhat inseparable ever since. I haven’t met him, but I have invited him over so hopefully I will get to soon. He has his own place so they tend to go there if they’re not out.
Its hard as she is smitten and I can’t say he has done anything wrong as such, but I just struggle with why an adult would want to date a school girl (albeit one who will be an adult in a few months). I have had the usual chats about being careful/contraception etc.

A real mixed bag and I think this is what I’m struggling with. She is so nearly an adult. She is happy and in the throes of a new relationship. But it just doesn’t feel right.

A few people have asked what her friends think of it all and tbh I’m not sure, I know they’ve all met up as a group a few times so I assume they don’t think it’s overly weird.

Realistically, is there much you can actually do though? I'm asking this genuinely and kindly - would expressing your doubts and concerns land well or would she get defensive and view him as more desirable?

I don’t think there is to be honest, and I am wary of saying too much and pushing her away, especially before I’ve even met him.

You may have found this to be a positive experience but ask yourself when you reached 21 years of age, would you have gone out with a 15 year old school boy?

I think we can all agree that majority of men are programmed to find younger women attractive, but still doesn’t mean they should have sex with 15/16/17 year olds. The potential for manipulation and emotional harm for a teenager with a significant age gap is too high.

Yes it happened in the past but we don’t live in our grandparents era anymore where women’s inferior status to men was universally accepted.

In 2026 we should be questioning whether the law should actually permit an adult to have sex with a 16 year old. Yes there are safeguards in place to stop teachers etc and for 16/17 yr olds in care, but that doesn’t stop the creepy neighbour and the nearly 30 yr old male.

Some EU countries do have lower age limits but if you actually look more closely, for many of them there will still be safeguards and exceptions in place to stop exploitation of minors.

Its absolutely not the same though, a 15 year old boy is a long long way off his prime even if his brain is telling him to hump anything that moves. They don't really start filling out until they're in their 20s. I was a late bloomer but some of my friends at school were knockouts at 16, getting into clubs and looking closer to 21 than their real age. I had to use a borrowed ID!

Ok so by that token the law should make allowances for the fact 15 yr old girls ‘mature’ faster and men just ‘cant help’ themselves?

I said earlier in other posts that age of consent laws are a compromise but I'm happy with our's being 16.

CPS don't tend to press charges when one person is just over and the other just under the line if there are no other crimes being committed which I'm also fine with. I think any girl under 16 should be protected from grown men seducing them into sex they might later regret. But I'm also well aware that a girl's sex drives don't stay dormant until they hit the age of consent and that 20-something guys will always have a certain appeal to mid-teens girls and mid-teens girls who have completed puberty will always be appealing to older guys just due to facts of biology. It's only because of modern social norms that it isn't all that common for men to have much younger partners anymore, like has happened for most of recorded history.

Women in their early 20s probably aren't interested in mid teens boys because there's no biological reason. They aren't capable providers or protectors.
