DH refusing to look after the kids whilst working from home!

It’s half term and we both work from home in senior management jobs! DH is in the bedroom working from home and is refusing to have the kids in the room while he’s working and he’s refusing to help look after them during his working hours! So I’m having to work from home at the dining table while having to look after 3 going children with SEN! I feel like I’m going insane already and it’s only Monday! AIBU to think DH should also help look after the kids whilst working from home?

I can’t put my children in a holiday club because of their SEN! The last holiday club they were in wouldn’t have them because they couldn’t manage their autism and their meltdowns.

Neither of you should be looking after kids whilst working. Pay for childcare.

macaroon8 · 26/10/2026 12:35

Maybe should have sorted childcare?

Siennadollface · 26/10/2026 12:35

Didn't you make a plan for the week in advance? He's selfish sure, but if you're both working how did you expect to manage childcare between you?

LifeBeginsToday · 26/10/2026 12:35

Neither of you should be doing childcare while working.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 26/10/2026 12:35

You are both being unreasonable.

You're working from home. Not there to do childcare. Get a babysitter or use day-care...like most reasonable people with young children do.

amber763 · 26/10/2026 12:35

Probably you should have arranged childcare and neither of.you should be caring for kids while wfh. My employer would sack me or bring me back to the office ft.

Notanotherusername2626 · 26/10/2026 12:35

You are both being unreasonable.

You should have childcare so you can work. If they’re young enough to need looking after in this way, then you can’t realistically work with them at home.

Are you self employed?

NorwegianForest · 26/10/2026 12:35

Neither of you should be trying to look after them while also wfh.

Cornishbelle · 26/10/2026 12:36

You realistically can't expect to work efficiently from home with three kids there especially with SEN in the mix, it's unfair in both of you, is childcare possible?

Theimpossiblegirl · 26/10/2026 12:36

I know it's tough but surely your employers expect you to be working.

Saturdaysfairies · 26/10/2026 12:36

Why didn't you plan childcare for the holiday?
You both have to take responsibility.

NotNowMadam · 26/10/2026 12:36

Madness, OP. Why have you not sorted out childcare or taken annual leave?

ProfessorInkling · 26/10/2026 12:36

What did you do all summer?

Beckyboo8 · 26/10/2026 12:36

I can’t put my children in a holiday club because of their SEN! The last holiday club they were in wouldn’t have them because they couldn’t manage their autism and their meltdowns.

What do you usually do in the holidays?

IroningWhileWatchingTV · 26/10/2026 12:37

This has to be a wind up post

You have my sympathy as a fellow SEN parent but there are alternatives. Very expensive but they do exist.

Either way you can’t work with three SEN children at home. Take annual leave or carers leave.

What kind off job do you have where you can work, look after 3 children with additional needs and be on social media. Thats impressive

SereneFinch · 26/10/2026 12:37

What do you usually do in the holidays?

Usually it’s like this, DH refuses to help with the kids at all during his working hours and I have to look after the kids on my own whilst trying to work! But I’m fed up of it now and I think DH should be doing more to help!

There's no way anyone can work under those circumstances. One of you needs to take time off if the children cannot be elsewhere.

MellowSubmarine · 26/10/2026 12:38

This can’t be a serious post.

I’m sure people do do this but surely they would know it’s bad, and not post about it expecting sympathy.

Obviously both parents should use annual leave to share total school holiday days, or book childcare.

ChupacabraIsReal · 26/10/2026 12:38

Neither of you should be looking after children while you are working from home.
Do you have someone you could ask who could at least and sit with them while you're working? Siblings, friends, your parents. That way you could split the care up over the week.
Could they go to a friends, your parents etc?

I'm working on the assumption there are no spaces for them in care outside the home?

Beckyboo8 · 26/10/2026 12:38

I do take annual leave for some school holidays but don’t have enough annual leave to cover all school holidays!

i understand how hard it is. I sympathise.

but it’s not realistic for either of you to be able to work while minding 3 children. Have either of you got AL planned for later in the week?

Yes, he’s unreasonable. But so are you. Can you (both of you, not you specifically) not book childcare? Take annual leave?
