It’s 3 days, not 3 months! Some people are clueless and thick

Live opposite a couple with their teenage son. Yesterday as washing up, looked up randomly as you do. Saw the three of them carrying 4 packs of 24 rolls EACH! So 288 loo rolls. So are they going to use 1 and a third rolls each per hour in the 72 hour period? Or around 4.5 sheets per min.

God there are some very thick people about

Does anyone know the best and cheapest place to bulk buy loo roll from? I am forever running out (completely missing point of thread too I realise)?

BountyMarsMilkyWay · Today 09:54

Sherararara · Today 08:20

You aren’t wrong. As evidenced on here by all the many threads and bizarre responses.
Wind up radios must all be sold out now. Never mind that a battery powered one and a couple of AA batteries will last a month.
People rushing out to buy tins of sardines. Do you eat sardines? Well no, but apparently that’s the only tinned food available.
It demonstrates just how limited critical thinking is in most people. That’s the real scary thing, never mind WW3.

Oh so that's why I couldn't even buy the 2 tins that we usually buy aa week. I can't stand them bur they're not for me anyway.
Now I know why there's been a shortage recently.

Justwonderingifthisisnormal · Today 09:54

I think you're thicker than 288 rolls of 3 ply!!!

grapesstrawberriespleass · Today 09:54

This doesn’t surprise me. But what does surprise me is that amount of really dim people posting on MN about stockpiling. “What do I need to stockpile?”, “What exact things should I buy?”. I don’t know, how about things like tinned beans, tinned veg, tinned fruit, non perishables, food that doesn’t need power to cook? I can’t believe people have to actually ask.

Have we truly lost the ability to think for ourselves? I really despair for the intelligence of the average UK citizen. It’s like people can’t do anything without having to come online to double check they’re doing it right. Handholds everywhere.

InjuredDuck · Today 09:55

They were probably on offer and nothing to do with panic buying at all. In fact, I haven't seen one instance of panic buying recently and I work in a supermarket.

nomas · Today 09:55

We buy (branded) loo roll at the market for really cheap and keep it in the attic and have been doing so since pre-Covid era.

It's not about stockpiling or being thick, it's about buying in bulk and paying a fraction of the price charged by supermarkets and Amazon.

Monty36 · Today 09:56

Actually loo roll is one thing we do manufacture in the UK. So unlikely to run out of it. Assuming they have the chemicals.

FYI there's a global shortage of sardines due to a number of factors in Morocco. It has nothing to do with panic buying.

PappyPatty · Today 09:58

And did they have a big sign above their heads saying "We definitely didn't grab a pack of bog rolls for Gran, Grandad and Auntie Doris"?

CruCru · Today 10:04

I’ve just had a look at the Times Online and this isn’t even on the top stories any more. There’s a political sketch down towards the bottom of the politics section of UK but that’s from a few days ago.

What is there is that the reservoirs are about to run dry. I think that’s a bit more of an immediate risk. It’s tempting to think that we now have enough water (because of the storms) but this isn’t the case.

Sillyme1 · Today 10:10

I went into Lidl quite late the other day and the bread isle was completely empty. I’m sure it was the time of day, but it did slightly raise fears in me if the worst came to the worse and food shortages are a reality. I’m buying things like tins of lentils and beans which are handy anyway, but I think fresh vegetables, fruit and water would be the most worrying shortage if the worst did happen.

Yep. But my cat still wouldn't accept my logical explanation.

LilyBunch25 · Today 10:13

CosyDenimShark · Today 09:39

It's utterly ridiculous!
I had my (normal) weekly food shop delivered yesterday. The driver said to me "Gosh, you're lucky, only 2 substitutions". I said "Oh, has the storm cut supply or something?", he replied "No, the shelves are absolutely bare in store, everyone's panic buying because of what the Government have said!"
Bloody idiots!

Hasn't been noticeable here, I've been in and out of Saunsburys, Lidl, Morrisons at different times in last couple of weeks and seemed pretty normal.

Portmore · Today 10:14

Probably been to costco. Can get some really good deals on things like loo roll.
It's worth it if you've got somewhere to store it.

Got over a years worth of laundry & dishwasher tablets in one go saving about £300.

DH buys stupid things that are a good deal but in reality don't work eg huge bags of frozen chicken that is hassle to store & defrost also A lifetime supply of party serviettes. Good deal if you were having a huge wedding but not so much for a family.

The laundry and DW tablets is something I would definitely do- they work out expensive over the year so that makes sense.

BatmanBinSuparman · Today 09:42

at least with gas you can make flat breads with the flour, and heat food up which is in a tin

Yep we have also used the wood burner to make jacket potatoes in power cuts and can heat up food as well.

We tend to find the biggest issue is supply interruption it is not unusual for supermarkets to be bare and then about a week to settle down again.
But communities up here are used to it and we all help each other out.

Anything we don't use over winter gets used for camping trips so doesn't get wasted.

Maybeitllneverhappen · Today 10:23

I'm a bit worried that if the water supplies stop they're going to have very blocked toilets. 🤢

Swissmeringue · Today 10:25

They could just be stocking up? I got 4 x 24 rolls from Costco a couple of weeks ago. I'm not prepping for the apocalypse but they were a really good deal and now I don't have to buy loo rolls for a year.

Don't be so patronising, of course I read the news, and decided this is a load of rubbish. 🙄
I always have 3 days supply of loo roll anyway.

Is that why I can't buy sardines? I buy two tins every week for my dog, he loves them. I did my online is order last night and all the tinned sardines were out of stock. It didn't occur to.me that people might be stockpiling them!

Discosnake · Today 10:32

LilyBunch25 · Today 09:33

Same here with the mackerel- jack mackerel indeed...! I do always have loads of sardines as I and the cat love them though she was miffed when I was struggling to get them in spring water which is her preference!

Spring water here too! Lidl usually has them. The mackerel is sad event. There are still some around but the price is not making me happpy

PoliteGreyDreamer · Today 10:32

I do feel there is some exaggerating going on here.

There are multiple headlines about wind-up radios running out. When I Google that loads come up as in stock, including some for a little more than £10 on Amazon. You would be much harder pressed to find a portable air con unit, despite it being October.

When the COVID toilet paper panic hit, the big toilet paper subscribers (Who Gives a Crap) stopped taking orders except for existing customers. That simply hasn't happened yet.

I'm not convinced batteries are an issue either. I saw some in the supermarket yesterday afternoon (I was buying a birthday cake for a relative) and they were available to select in my online ASDA order too.

MadMAGA · Today 10:32

I bought loo roll in bulk ready for Brexit. DH took the mick mercilessly. Oh, how smug I was when covid hit and we were passing out loo roll supplies to friends and neighbours who were short.

Skybluecoat · Today 10:33

Probably for Halloween surely?

Ponoka7 · Today 10:34

Nappy sanitiser and flannels. Small bucket. That's all you'll need. However my DD worked in retail during Covid and they were allowed to but the big multi roll packs. We told neighbours that we knew would struggle to ask if they needed a roll. People have vulnerable relatives to consider.
