It’s 3 days, not 3 months! Some people are clueless and thick

Live opposite a couple with their teenage son. Yesterday as washing up, looked up randomly as you do. Saw the three of them carrying 4 packs of 24 rolls EACH! So 288 loo rolls. So are they going to use 1 and a third rolls each per hour in the 72 hour period? Or around 4.5 sheets per min.

God there are some very thick people about

when people are paying £100 for 24 Andrex who'll be the thick one?

Get a grip use newspaper

LilyBunch25 · Today 09:28

Firstly, calling anyone thick, especially in the thread title, is rather rude. Secondly you have absolutely no idea why they've bought that quantity and its literally nothing to do with you and certainly doesn't justify calling them thick and clueless 🙄 special offer? medical condition? Halloween party? Don't want to buy it for a while? Etc etc.

Cosyblankets · Today 09:29

I get mine from costco.
Think it's a pack of 40

I buy lots of sardines regularly as they’re a treat for the dog. Cats love them too so people are probably buying them for pets. Also, tinned Sardines have had a supply issue for the past 3 months so it’s likely that people are selfishly stockpiling them in case they go out of supply again. If so, it’s nothing to with the 3 day advice

I LOVE sardines. I always buy bunch at once. I am now fuming I didn't stock up on mackerel before it became not a mackerel mackerel....
Half my stocking up is basically due to risk of the item I like changing

Gengha · Today 09:31

I think we can see where all the Covid panic buyers are now. Probably also would be furious if their usual purchases weren’t available

MaidOfSteel · Today 09:32

It’s like Covid all over again. And by that I mean the nasty, judgemental posts here on MN. Like the OP’s.

TroysMammy · Today 09:32

I bought my usual packet of 36 toilet rolls at the end of September. My ex-partner who went through them at a phenomenal rate moved out on 2 October. One toilet roll has been lasting me a week so it will be ages before I buy more. If there is a problem after then I'll use my cat, he's used to licking shit off his fur 😂

User3353821614 · Today 09:33

I’ve literally seen zero people stockpiling anything, supermarket shelves are full and no trolleys full of tins and bottled water.

Realistically though, if things get BAD; we gonna need more than three days’ worth. It will be ok if the worst that happens is a power outage.

Same here with the mackerel- jack mackerel indeed...! I do always have loads of sardines as I and the cat love them though she was miffed when I was struggling to get them in spring water which is her preference!

Me neither. South east?

MargotLeadbetterOBE · Today 09:35

Toilets won’t be flushing. Hope they’re digging a long drop in the back garden 😂

Scottishskifun · Today 09:36

Would hate to be your neighbour when I get back from a costco shop!

I think it depends on your area OP up in the NE of Scotland it's not unusual to be storm ready we get regular power cuts and delivery delays to supermarkets due to weather conditions.

I've had my winter stock in since beginning of October. It includes things like bread flour and yeast, UHT milk, water, tinned food and spare dog food.
We have a wood burner and gas hob (gas has always stayed on in power cuts).
We have power banks, solar charge banks etc.

It's not unusual for us to get several days interruption and roads blocked with snow drifts.

The longest the power was off was 8 days and with the whole area out and a dog there wasn't many options!

Many communities this is normal prep - ask anyone who lives on Shetland!

CosyDenimShark · Today 09:39

It's utterly ridiculous!
I had my (normal) weekly food shop delivered yesterday. The driver said to me "Gosh, you're lucky, only 2 substitutions". I said "Oh, has the storm cut supply or something?", he replied "No, the shelves are absolutely bare in store, everyone's panic buying because of what the Government have said!"
Bloody idiots!

Roundbutsquaretoo · Today 09:40

I'm going to miss the point of the thread entirely but we have a 5-6 person household and do generally get through 1-1.5 rolls a day, especially during holidays. If toilet roll (especially branded!) is on a good deal, I'll buy a decent amount because it saves me money in the long run.
If they are stocking up, well we don't know when those 3 days worth might come about! And I'd rather be in a position to give family a couple rolls in a proper pinch.

BatmanBinSuparman · Today 09:40

I'd buy

tinned rice pudding, peaches, oats, soya milk, sardines, pilchards, sweetcorn, crackers, riveta, dates, corned beef, candles, camping light and water.

but this could all go off before its needed

at least with gas you can make flat breads with the flour, and heat food up which is in a tin

I get them in bulk as I can't be arsed to carry them back when I'm walking 😂

Did you mean Charmin ? 😉

Smartiepants79 · Today 09:43

Have you never met anyone who bulk buys before? Why on earth would assume that they’ve bought it to cover three days?? And not the next few months. We buy our toilet rolls in bulk. About enough for 3 months in one go. Have done for years. Lots of people do this if they can store it. It saves money.

newrubylane · Today 09:44

user1471538275 · Today 08:51

Not sure about 3 year supply.

1 loo roll per person per week - so 288 would do a family of 5 about a year

What??? We don't go through anywhere near that amount. I buy six rolls a month for four of us!

Sirzy · Today 09:45

When my sister goes to Costco she gets a load for me. If it’s on the right offer I will stock up for 3 months as I’m lucky to have space to store it and it works out a lot cheaper!

You're very quick to judge, @fld . You have no idea who the loo rolls are going to be used by. Could be they have a Costco/a n other cash and carry card and are buying them for both sets of parents and parents' parents, Auntie Mildred, child at uni or other children not at home, neighbours that they are friendly with (which would rule you out). You just don't know. Use your imagination instead of condemning people - it's a much nicer way to live.

If you're that worried there will be none left for you, pop out and get a 4 pack. That should last you for a while by the sounds of it.

Lurker85 · Today 09:52

I always have a massive supply of toilet roll, everyone always took the piss out of me… until Covid hit 😆

AlwaysSometimesNever · Today 09:52

I’ve never understood the loo roll obsession. Surely loo roll is a fairly easily substituted thing if you do run out? Paper, leaves, rags etc? Thrown into bin bag not flushed?
We live very rurally and have power cuts all the time. We keep the basics for a week in as standard, especially in winter. It’s just sensible planning where we live.
