“I’ll leave you to get on with it” - Aibu to not have greeted my DH this morning after blazing row?

DH upset me last night. We planned to watch a movie together after a long hard week and instead he chose to go the pub. I just said, in a tone I was careful of, I thought it was our night tonight? I’m a bit sad that we don’t get that time together now.

he shouted at me, told me to see a psychiatrist and then said our relationship is going to fail if I don’t change my form of thinking.

obviously this made me cry. I tried to hide in the kitchen to stop him seeing me cry but he came in before he left and saw me. He sighed and said “shall I just leave you to get on with it?” A pretty impossible question - if I said no it would mean he wouldn’t go and I’d get the blame.

he was gone for a few hours and came back to saying he was heartbroken about me being upset. I said I wasn’t upset he went the pub, I was upset that he screams at me and tells me it’s wrong to cry. We went to bed alone,

this morning he got up early with DC (he does Sundays, I do every other day). I walked into the living room and said a general good morning, kids came up to hug me. DH stayed laying on the couch. I made a cup of tea and sat down and he said, in front of the kids, “no hug, no kiss, no good morning? Fucking hell another shit day”

he’s since screamed again and told me he’s sick of me being sad, I need antidepressants and that he expects his wife when she walks into a room he’s in, to say good morning. WIBU not to after last night?

This sounds as though it's part of a much bigger problem.

He appears to talk to you like shit which is a big problem.

He also appears to think you're far too needy. If there's any truth in this then that is also a big problem.

Is there any truth to it?

Goodadvice1980 · 25/10/2026 12:19

Sorry OP, he’s demonising you. Do you suspect another woman might have caught his eye?

Haveacold · 25/10/2026 12:24

I don’t think I’m needy, I just have said for years I don’t like being shouted at. He has every week day evening filled with activities so I asked for one night a week!

Sounds like this is just a small part of a bigger problem. You need to look at the wider issue as opposed to just this one.

Absobeautely · 25/10/2026 12:32

Would you not rather divorce and enjoy life?
Being around a screaming man isn't making anyone's life better, including your children

Mischance · 25/10/2026 12:34

How very difficult for your children. I was the child caught in the crossfire of parental antagonism. It is not good.

Please find a moment to get your OH on his own and discuss this.

I am sorry you are feeling so sad.

Maray1967 · 25/10/2026 12:35

He talks like that in front of your DC?

Bloody awful.

Why is he 'sick of you being sad' and thinks you 'need antidepressants' and it's 'another shit day' then?

If you're not needy, why has he convinced himself of this?

He sounds like a dick.

LeaveTheWorldBehind · 25/10/2026 12:35

It doesn't sound like a happy marriage or home OP. In fact it sounds like he doesn't even like you and is trying to pick fights that he can blame on you.

whatthesigma · 25/10/2026 12:36

What worries me here is that you said “in a tone I was careful of”.

Do you usually have to ‘watch your tone’? Do you feel you are walking on eggshells? This is a much bigger problem than he going to the pub instead of sticking to the plans you’d already made.

shhblackbag · 25/10/2026 12:36

He sounds like a twat. Some men are fucking infuriating.

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/10/2026 12:36

Well he wasn’t so heartbroken he couldn’t go to the pub. Shouting at you isn’t on, and I’d be giving consideration to how your mental health is but I’d also be very aware of him using your mental health to threaten you.

Sounds like a shit show tbh.

Yeah, I picked up on that too. Not a nice way to live.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/10/2026 12:38

Stop crying and hiding in the kitchen and find your anger. He is an arsehole who treats you like shit. This must make for a miserable life for you and the children.

pinkyredrose · 25/10/2026 12:40

What an arsehole you're married to. And speaks to you like shit and swears in front of the kids?

Please don't subject them to any more of this angry piece of crap.

What's your housing situation, in joint names, his name etc?

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 25/10/2026 12:41

If he wants a wife who’s not sad he could try keeping his word when you have agreed to spend time together, not screaming at you, not swearing in front of the children, not expecting affection from a wife he has been verbally abusive towards. It’s no wonder you are sad.

Why have you put up with this shit of him shouting at you for years?

arethereanyleftatall · 25/10/2026 12:43

He’s a nasty horrible person op. You, and your children, would be happier if you didn’t live with him.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 25/10/2026 12:43

Truly, this man is what is making you “depressed” and sad.

Kick him to the kerb.

Start looking into leaving him. The way he speaks to you is awful. I wouldn’t treat my dog like that. Think about what he is showing the kids as well.

Big girl pants on, speak to people who can help (family, GP, divorce lawyer).

You deserve better. If that doesn’t hit, think about what you’d say to a friend or family member who wrote what you have.

FancyKitten · 25/10/2026 12:44

It’s him. Not you. He’ll frame it as being you.

He was heartbroken? But still went to the pub.

dontaskmeanythinginthemorning · 25/10/2026 12:45

Did you point out that you did in fact say ‘Good morning’, but that instead of acknowledging you he stayed lounging on the sofa (shouldn’t he be spending this one morning he gets up with the kids actually engaging with them…?) Where was your ‘Good morning’ if it’s such a crucial expectation of a partner to receive one? Where was your kiss, cuddle and cup of tea (which is the least he could do to make up for the fact that he ditched you for a better offer last night)? Don’t waste your life tiptoeing around this and don’t subject your children to it. I’m well over 40 and I’m still affected by living with a parental dynamic like this.

OffWith · 25/10/2026 12:46

He talks to you like that in front of your children?

And you still allow him in the house?

YABU to meekly take this abuse. You would however be very reasonable to start divorce proceedings.

arethereanyleftatall · 25/10/2026 12:47

How many Saturday nights have there been op, since you’ve had small children and thus at least one of you needs to stay in, where you have ‘just decided to go to the pub’? How would he respond?

ducks in a row time?

Pearlstillsinging · 25/10/2026 12:48

I'd be sad if I had to live in your situation but I would also be very angry and do something to bring about change. Don't put up with his bad behaviour any longer, unless you want your children to be sad, too.
