Do you wash your vacuum head every day?

Following on from another thread in Chat, someone commented that you should be washing your vacuum head regularly, at least weekly if not more. It made me think. 🤔 I have no recollection of ever washing the head of the vacuum cleaner unless I was doing a deep clean of the whole equipment - which might be once every blue moon.
So my question is
Yes you should clean the Vacuum head every week - choose AIBU
No, that would be madness and a waste of time - choose YANBU

Are they even washable?

MajorSamanthaCarter · 25/10/2026 08:36

Vacuum head? I'm not even sure what that is. I've never washed any part of a vacuum in my life.

Bogstandardname · 25/10/2026 08:37

Just wondering how on earth on I would be able to wash the head of a Shark vacuum and get it properly dry plus I think it may have some electrical elements inside it. Curious, and I hope this doesn't start me off me off on another chore I feel I should be doing.

rumerz · 25/10/2026 08:37

No!

Saturdaysfairies · 25/10/2026 08:37

Won't happen.

Maryqueenofstots · 25/10/2026 08:38

Skank monster here - 27 years of vacuum ownership across 3 different machines and I’ve never washed the head, let alone weekly.

3peassuit · 25/10/2026 08:38

I give it a quick wipe down every week if that counts.

idontknowwhattodo2026 · 25/10/2026 08:38

Liek you - once in a blue moon lol. I don’t even bacon every day?! Well not everywhere - sitting room and kitchen yes because I have a 4 year old who created the need to vacuum those rooms daily lol

Northernexiled · 25/10/2026 08:38

I have washed the soft roller (hard floors) of my handheld Dyson about 3 times. I’ve probably had it 10 years.

YouBelongWithMe · 25/10/2026 08:38

I do actually wash out the collection cylinder pretty often - perhaps once a fortnight. I would like to clean in the head but I haven't figured out how yet.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/10/2026 08:39

I only vacuume once in a blue moon so washing any part of the vaccume cleaner wouldn’t even be on my radar. The obsession with cleaning on MN is off the scale. How do people have time for all these cleaning chores? They must have no life.

sittingonabeach · 25/10/2026 08:39

I remove hair that gets caught on it, but that’s it

MellowSubmarine · 25/10/2026 08:40

What will happen if I don’t? I haven’t ever washed it, but have had to take out the little furry spinning bit in my shark where it’s got something wrapped round it. But I’ve never washed any of it.
Despite that, it still works. We have a cream carpet in our bedroom - the hoover has never marked it or made it dirty.

EBearhug · 25/10/2026 08:40

I remove all the hair that gets wrapped round it. I washed it once after accidentally sucking up some wet stuff. That's once in decades of vacuum-owning and using.

Bogstandardname · 25/10/2026 08:41

Yep, I wash the cylinder bits and pieces and change the filters, not every week, but the head, no.

One of the posters on the other thread that did disinfect regularly was a cleaner

Bergamotte · 25/10/2026 08:42

We never wash the main head with the spinning brush (just pull out the long hair and fluff which gets caught).

If I'm going to use the crevice tool to vacuum the sofa or something, then I do wipe the crevice tool first. (But some people think I'm a bit weird about things like that).

Edited

It’s all the germs we can’t see is the worry by the people who disinfect the hoover regularly. Also you need to hoover the house in a certain order so you don’t spread germs around

UnPetitDunPetit · 25/10/2026 08:43

The Venn diagram of people who do this and people with too much time on their hands is a perfect circle.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/10/2026 08:44

Christ no. Who are the people who have time to add to the existing mountain of obligations with pointless extra work like this?

DyslexicPoster · 25/10/2026 08:44

Occasionally I wrestle the arsehole shark to the floor and dig out all the crap and hair that get stuck in it's no wrap roller, that has all kinds wrapped around it. Never washed it.

I avoid this problem by not licking the floors or inhaling the carpet 👍

But why? It's literally for collecting dust and dirt from the floor which then goes straight in the bin Confused

Who said that?

I know I said every 4-6 weeks you should clean your vaccum to ensure good function. I also said professional cleaners like myself should be doing it between each client if they use their own machine and that includes changing filters and bags so it all gets very expensive.

Who said the average householder should do it every time they use it in their own homes?

itsnearly2027 · 25/10/2026 08:46

I saw that thread. She’s gone perfect baby mad
