Do you wash your vacuum head every day?

Following on from another thread in Chat, someone commented that you should be washing your vacuum head regularly, at least weekly if not more. It made me think. 🤔 I have no recollection of ever washing the head of the vacuum cleaner unless I was doing a deep clean of the whole equipment - which might be once every blue moon.
So my question is
Yes you should clean the Vacuum head every week - choose AIBU
No, that would be madness and a waste of time - choose YANBU

I occasionally wipe down the bottom of the cleaning head (the surface which touches the floor) with an antibacterial wipe. Does that count?

I regularly remove the head and use the cylinder to get into corners etc and have pondered about doing the same with the edge touching the floor but have never actually done it.

But why? It's literally for collecting dust and dirt from the floor which then goes straight in the bin Confused

It starts to smell and parts of the machine can get clogged with dust and dirt and it reduces function.

Oh my god ocd at its best.
Like hell...im busy relaxing.

I have a Dyson with different attachments, so have separate for the mattress, skirting boards and my plantation shutters. I wouldn't go from the floor to the shutters and would need to wash the brush, if I was. I do wash the connecting plastic bits. I think if you have pets etc you probably need to. I have a cockateil, so I'm conscious of feathers/seeds etc being not good for lungs. My DD has a long haired cat, so rinses her vacuum, but has different attachments. If you don't have clutter, or toddlers etc, vacuuming is quick. We aren't TV watchers and like to keep active (someone asked about how people have time). The more organised you are, the easier life is.

I avoid this problem by not licking the floors or inhaling the carpet 👍

The OP of the other thread does have a crawling baby so potentially they are doing this

It looks quite grimy and grey. As a family we are quite dry-skinned and 'sheddy', for want of a better word. When we hoover, we get a LOT of dead skin particles that look grey and sit in the crevices of the machine.

A crawling premature baby born at the cusp of viability.

Especially if you vacuum, rather than brush, so are picking up food/crumbs. As well as pet hair. The cylinders need an occasional clean.

I can think of other things to do other than watching TV before I got to the point that disinfecting the hoover was an activity to do like a hobby

I only vacuume once in a blue moon so washing any part of the vaccume cleaner wouldn’t even be on my radar. The obsession with cleaning on MN is off the scale. How do people have time for all these cleaning chores? They must have no life.

MN clean-freakery has IMO been off the scale for ages. I dare say any germs unfortunate enough to be trodden in to many MN homes will probably commit mass suicide on the spot.

Well yes they might need occasional cleaning but I was questioning why the PP thinks that needs to be done fortnightly. What is on your floors if your hoover is getting so smelly that quickly that it needs not just emptying but washing out, every other week? 😷

Edited as realised the reply wasn't from the same PP I originally quoted.

Bogstandardname · 25/10/2026 08:54

This is really bringing out the cleaning anxiety in me. I just know that before the day's out, I shall be trying to wash the Shark head and probably ruining it. Are we talking wash or wipe , quite a difference.

Kerri126 · 25/10/2026 08:55

Er no, I take it apart and clean the filters and give it a quick wipe over when it feels like it’s not working properly anymore - maybe once a year at best? The roller get’s de-haired more often when I remember.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/10/2026 08:56

I don't even wash my OWN head every week.

I understand that urge to have the house germ free for a small and precious baby but really? A few carpet bugs are good for them (my kids grew up snuggling cats and dogs and licking chickens and they're all sturdy). It's bordering on illness to be that worried, even though it's understandable.

sittingonabeach · 25/10/2026 08:57

I wonder how some posters would cope with the hoovers in university halls 🤢

I'm not a fan of cordless vaccums like sharks and Dysons, but when I see them, or when I have used them, they seem like they are easily clogged and have small compartments.

I can imagine if that was our main hoover for our family of 6 with pets, we'd have to do it weekly or fortnightly, too.

I ensure my clients buy a corded hoover for me to commit to them. Even a really cheap one.

Fair enough! If we're talking about bagless vacuums I agree they look gross - bags all the way! 😅

Sherararara · 25/10/2026 08:58

We wash it when it needs washing, usually every few months. Usually it will need de-clogging with something stuck or hair wrapped around the roller so we take it apart to clear it and take the opportunity to wash it.

Her baby was born at 24 weeks. She probably doesn't want it to die.

Lench · 25/10/2026 08:59

My vacuum cleaners seem to break on an annual basis, so I don’t have much of a chance to clean them before I’m having to replace them

That's why I said it's understandable. But also why it's bordering on an illness. Her baby is crawling now. Germs are everywhere.

Thelonelyshrew · 25/10/2026 09:00

My nana, born at the end of the 1800’s always said a pek of dust never killed anyone. She was right!

All the clean freaks on here are totally OTT. Surely we have to build up some immunity?!

Ratherhaveacupofteaandabiscuit · 25/10/2026 09:01

Christ, this has taken me back to 1997 when I had the misfortune to work with a horribly passive aggressive woman who asked me how often I washed my vacuum.

If you are reading this Lynne, I never liked you.

Maybe it’s because you don’t disinfect them everyday!

I agree the different views on this thread might be a reflection of who has what type of hoover. We had a Dyson in our rented flat and it was flipping useless, as well as big and noisy. So maybe they're more prone to clogging. I can see how the would get smelly if you have dogs as well 😷

I now have my mum's old Miele from the mid-90s - it's so much better and has never needed to be washed (and I have no idea how you would even wash the "foot" without breaking it).
