Do you wash your vacuum head every day?

Following on from another thread in Chat, someone commented that you should be washing your vacuum head regularly, at least weekly if not more. It made me think. 🤔 I have no recollection of ever washing the head of the vacuum cleaner unless I was doing a deep clean of the whole equipment - which might be once every blue moon.
So my question is
Yes you should clean the Vacuum head every week - choose AIBU
No, that would be madness and a waste of time - choose YANBU

The only time I might consider it is if I had to take it apart for a blockage, I think that has only happened once

EndorsingPRActice · 25/10/2026 09:51

I’ve never had a vacuum with a washable head so no. This does not in any way concern me.

PigletJohn · 25/10/2026 09:52

I damp-sponge with detergent the casing and inside when I change the bag and filters, also the ends of the tubes where they connect. If dirty they can seize.

I would clean the head if it was dirty, e.g sucked up something wet or sticky or smelly. A head with spinning brushes or rollers occasionally needs to be cleared of threads or hairs.

I also have a builders wet-and-dry canister vac, and I wash it out after use and leave to dry, but not if it's just house or car dust.

Sasha07 · 25/10/2026 09:52

I clean the dust from the cylinder after each clean. I wipe/wash it out weekly. I only clean the base after I've washed the carpets. Mental to wash it daily or even weekly. Unless you deep clean your home then keep on top of every single thing, at every single moment that it gets 'dirty', you'll always be transferring 'germs'.

Germs can be good for you and basic cleaning hasn't killed anyone yet! Being a germaphobe has made way for people being more susceptible to allergies as the immune system is built to fight against things. Don't come at me if you can't understand the difference between walking on a day old, unmopped floor barefoot compared to licking the chicken packet out of a wheelie bin.

DH hoovered up a spilled curry once, leading to washing the hoover. How that man is still
alive is a mystery.

I thought that was the point of a vacuum cleaner.

AsACloud · 25/10/2026 09:53

We have a dog that sheds more than expected so vacuum often. I have never thought to wash the vacuum head! However, we have an air compressor in the garage (with a lead to pump air into tyres) and I use this to blast clean all the Dyson parts when I empty the bin compartment. Very satisfying…although a friend caught me doing this one time and said I was like Monica in Friends, when she uses the handhold vacuum to clean the big one 😂

CatSquirrelDuck · 25/10/2026 09:55

My husband rants and complains that no one else ever cleans the vacuum filter and it won't work properly if you don't ... so he does it ... does that count? 😂

PigletJohn · 25/10/2026 09:58

LBFseBrom · 25/10/2026 09:53

I thought that was the point of a vacuum cleaner.

Most vacs are not intended for sucking up wet material. A fine spray of droplets is likely to coat the internal parts, including the fan and motor. This is not cleanable without dismantling.

Vomit, curry and animal muck will be persistent, once inside.

Wet and dry vacs are different.

Every time I vacuum I remove the vacuum head and the tube, dissemble the head and unravel hair from the brush. Then I run water through the head and the tube. I’ve thrown out two vacuum cleaners in the past few years because I have a short haired dog who sheds hair everywhere and if I don’t do this they become hopelessly clogged with it.

For anyone with the same problem I now have a Henry rechargeable stick vacuum designed for pet owners and in that respect it’s the best thing I ever bought. It performs better than a Dyson or a Shark (neither model could cope with the pet hair), simply made, comes to bits and every part is accessible and washable, and it has a disposable collection bag rather than a collection bin. So I suppose whether it’s unreasonable depends on circumstance.

Brickiscool · 25/10/2026 10:02

I didn't even realise this was a thing

Seziah · 25/10/2026 10:04

I wash the filters occasionally, but not as much as I should. I give the robot vacuum a wipe over every now and then, but nothing will make it as dirty as when it rolled over cat sick and I had to unscrew the wheels to clean the crevices with bleach 🤮. So no, unless it’s dirty I don’t bother

Flomingho · 25/10/2026 10:06

Not every day, that seems excessive but I wipe down with an anti- bacterial wipe e very so often. Once I put all the parts in water to clean them and then couldn't get rid of a stagnant water smell and had to bin the hoover, so worry about doing this now.

Bumcake · 25/10/2026 10:09

It’s honestly never even occurred to me as something to do.

The weirdest cleaning foible I know is someone who cleans her front door keys fairly regularly.

SausageLabLady · 25/10/2026 10:10

I wash the filters when they’re dirty but the only time I’ve cleaned the head is when I accidentally hoovered some puppy poo up thinking it was a leaf 😂

gullgal · 25/10/2026 10:11

sittingonabeach · 25/10/2026 08:39

I remove hair that gets caught on it, but that’s it

Yes I remove any debris. Nothing more

Myli1 · 25/10/2026 10:12

I’d wash it if I was completely stripping down and dismantling the vacuum cleaner, and only after ensuring I’d removed any electrical components, but that would only be if there was a problem with it, like it stopped sucking or something.

UniquePinkSwan · 25/10/2026 10:14

Absolutely not

Denim4ever · 25/10/2026 10:16

I clean it every now and then but, as it's not a wet and dry vacuum cleaner, I definitely don't use water. Plus, who vacuums every day?

BeRightThere · 25/10/2026 10:18

On a Henry ? Never

On a robot cleaner ? Never

Munchyseeds2 · 25/10/2026 10:23

Never!!
I do know that DH occasionally removes my hair that gets wrapped around it.

Absolutelyawefull · 25/10/2026 10:24

What! Why would you 🤔

FirmSnake · 25/10/2026 10:24

I take mine apart and wash the whole thing when it stops working properly. About once every 3 years.

Comtesse · 25/10/2026 10:27

UnPetitDunPetit · 25/10/2026 08:43

The Venn diagram of people who do this and people with too much time on their hands is a perfect circle.

You are not wrong

LibertyLily · 25/10/2026 10:28

Our Henry (actually Hetty 🩷) is 18 years old and I've never done this!

Gingercatlover · 25/10/2026 10:29

I have never done this, would never occur to me to do this. I vac daily.
