Do you wash your vacuum head every day?

Following on from another thread in Chat, someone commented that you should be washing your vacuum head regularly, at least weekly if not more. It made me think. 🤔 I have no recollection of ever washing the head of the vacuum cleaner unless I was doing a deep clean of the whole equipment - which might be once every blue moon.
So my question is
Yes you should clean the Vacuum head every week - choose AIBU
No, that would be madness and a waste of time - choose YANBU

I don’t even know what a vacuum head is

Beachtastic · 25/10/2026 10:33

Unless "vacuum head" is a euphemism, no.

Have you ever discovered the Advanced Search function in MN? It would be very easy to use that to find the thread in question if you really doubt that it exists.

The thread does exist, that’s what prompted this thread. Lexie is upset because I didn’t actually quote directly from the thread, rather I summarised the gist of it.

I have a Vax cordless stick vacuum cleaner and I probably remove the trapped hair from the rotating roller once a week or so (there's 3 of us with long hair) I'll empty the bin every use because its tiny. I give the whole exterior of it a wipe down occasionally but the only parts I wash are the bin and the filter, but that's once every few months I think. If I dunked the head in water, it would never work again!

I have a DC with a dustmite allergy so I probably vacuum more than most people.

TerfOnATrain · 25/10/2026 10:37

I don't even wash the filters let alone the head. I mean, what components of a vacuum head can you wash? its just a piece of plastic and a brush.

I did used to have to regularly cut DD's tangled hair out of the brush at one time, but I bought a pet hair one and she moved out so no longer a problem.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/10/2026 10:41

I have never cleaned a hoover and never will unless I accidentally hoovered up cat poo or something which I have never done.

Every time I vacuum I remove the vacuum head and the tube, dissemble the head and unravel hair from the brush. Then I run water through the head and the tube. I’ve thrown out two vacuum cleaners in the past few years because I have a short haired dog who sheds hair everywhere and if I don’t do this they become hopelessly clogged with it.

For anyone with the same problem I now have a Henry rechargeable stick vacuum designed for pet owners and in that respect it’s the best thing I ever bought. It performs better than a Dyson or a Shark (neither model could cope with the pet hair), simply made, comes to bits and every part is accessible and washable, and it has a disposable collection bag rather than a collection bin. So I suppose whether it’s unreasonable depends on circumstance.

Thank you I’ll take a look x I have 4 short haired dogs- white fur 😧

Every day?!

I have washed the soft roller (hard floors) of my handheld Dyson about 3 times. I’ve probably had it 10 years.

Your home must be very clean! I do mine several times a year, but I've got a dog.

Createausername1970 · 25/10/2026 11:00

Has never crossed my mind.

I will unravel hair or anything else wrapped round the rollers.

I do wipe the see-through bin out on a fairly regular basis, but that is mainly so I can see what's in their easily and whether anything needs to be retrieved when I empty it. (Lego etc).

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/10/2026 11:03

I have a Miele Cat and Dog, I don't think anything is washable. I remove the hair from the spinny thing, change the bags (they seal up, and I have a dust allergy so I can't be emptying anything where it's loose) and change the filters. Any cleaner I've had uses my vacuum cleaner so no chance of any cross contamination. I'm good with that

It starts to smell and parts of the machine can get clogged with dust and dirt and it reduces function.

Doesn't your machine have filters? They're the bits that you should keep clean and wash regularly to keep the machine doing its job properly.

CherryKerry · 25/10/2026 11:10

I throw the whole Dyson in the washing machine on a boil wash everyday. It does mean I then need to drag the washing machine down to the laundrette to throw it in their industrial sized top loading machines but saves me a fortune on tinfoil hats.

XenoBitch · 25/10/2026 11:29

I don't even use my vacuum cleaner everyday, let alone wash the head.

Not once in 30 plus years.

PDAblues · 25/10/2026 12:45

It never even occurred to me that you could do this.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhyohwhy · 25/10/2026 12:46

I only vacuum on a full moon. I’ve never washed it

WearingBeautifulShoes · 25/10/2026 13:02

Yet again I feel like I'm living in a parallel universe. My mind is blown that this is something that could ever enter someone's head. Happy to see most people on the thread are not clinically insane don't do this either.

MauriceDobson · 25/10/2026 13:24

I've just dusted for the first time in 2 months.

ChequerToRed · 25/10/2026 13:32

No, never have. I’ve got more important things to do, such as looking at interesting shaped clouds or wondering if dinosaurs sang a dawn chorus and what it might have sounded like.

Ponoka7 · 25/10/2026 14:37

sittingonabeach · 25/10/2026 08:52

I can think of other things to do other than watching TV before I got to the point that disinfecting the hoover was an activity to do like a hobby

It isn't a hobby, it's part of a cleaning routine, usually done when I'm planning on having a fairly relaxed day/evening, in my apartment. I don't have a full house to clean anymore.

Of course they did. The Land before time taught us that, then Jurassic Park confirmed it.

Why does it matter? The OP on that thread was certainly washing her vacuum cleaner head once a week.

Because it misrepresents the thread entirely
