To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

I wouldn't care tbh because it would be about the conversation and company to me.

Tell her you’re doing a Smithy, order your own (don’t forget the Sag Aloo) and you’ll eat it in the car😉

I’ll never understand why he wanted so many bhunas! Chuck in a jalfrezi or rogan josh fgs.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 22/10/2026 19:24

I would be very annoyed too. A good takeaway is a treat. Supermarket food cannot even come close.

Which involves food. If food is so unimportant, don't make it part of the event. I have vegan friends whom I never meet for meals as I can't eat vegan food. That isn't a problem. Bad food, however, is.

Are you unable to eat all food that is not meat or dairy?

Fizbosshoes · 22/10/2026 19:25

Lots of people missing the point that this was a mutual agreement to get a takeaway that they would each pay for and they usually take in turns to host.

Considering how nearly all of MN cook everything from scratch it seems strange that doesnt seem to apply when its a supermarket curry.
Although the vote says most people think there is a massive difference between a ready mean and an actual takeaway!

PointyBirdsArePointyPointy · 22/10/2026 19:26

I am fuming on your behalf OP. If she had suggested that in the first place then fine - well, sort of fine. A supermarket curry is just not the same and I’d probably opt out of that anyway. I’d be telling her that as the plans have changed I’ll take a rain check —and stay at home with a takeaway—

Bananacrepewithnuts · 22/10/2026 19:26

Perhaps she's short of money x

HughJarsed · 22/10/2026 19:26

I would say, ‘oh what about x? I was looking forward to that!’. It’s poor friend behaviour for her to unilaterally make a decision like this, and in my view a bit rude.

To be fair, I can't go to most vegan restaurants as I'm allergies to legumes (beans and lentils) including soya. I'm ok with very small amounts of soya but it's rare a vegan restaurant has something beyond plain rice or chips that I can eat.

Yes I'd assume this which is why I'd be peeved but not saying anything

What a fuss about nothing.

Just enjoy the evening with your friends with no drama @Teriyt and have an Indian takeaway at home in a week or so if you're that desperate for one.

Yes.

This is the crux. I don’t like people making decisions for me. This case is worse because they decided something, and the friend just went and did her own thing regardless

Really cannot believe a lot of the responses. Most are really passive aggressive and snobby or you just want to embarrass your mate.
seriously who cares?!

EarringsandLipstick · 22/10/2026 19:28

This is mad to me! I assumed everyone would be voting YABU, like me but votes & comments prove me wrong!

Now I guess I’m the wrong demographic, I don’t like takeaways, at all. I don’t love ready meals either but I’d greatly prefer it to a takeaway.

I also would be appreciative of a friend organising the get-together & wouldn’t overly care about the food choice.

I can eat vegan snacks, but not a full meal.

Supermarket takeaways are rank. They just have this weird undertaste and always make me feel a bit ill. I'd be livid if someone just decided that they were going to have that instead of an actual takeaway. I would say I was ill, which wouldn't entirely be a lie, as if I ate one I would genuinely feel unwell.

Sorry but I just can't imagine being livid over this.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 22/10/2026 19:28

Some people's idea of a treat isn't what others anticipate.
We used to eat out with other couples on a Saturday night..
All met in our own cars at the edge of our village...then followed whoever was choosing that week.
Once followed and realised we were at Wacky Warehouse..
For the ill informed its a place with soft play..
Dh was fuming when I refused to get out of the car !
*none of us had dc with us..

This 100% I was also going to say the friend made the effort to get the curry and host

My stomach cares. People who say they don't care about food are annoying IMO.

Whisperwaves · 22/10/2026 19:29

I wouldn't care. It would be more about spending time with my mates than what we were eating.

Minniliscious · 22/10/2026 19:29

The only decent curry from a supermarket is the Asda Bom Bahia range - their slow cooked beef madras and lamb Bhuna is actually really good. This is coming from a food snob. Having said that though, I’d be really disappointed OP.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 22/10/2026 19:29

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:55

My friend has asked what curries they are so I’ll find out soon hopefully!

Tell her to put the supermarket curry in the freezer and that you want takeaway (nicely of course) don't be a doormat!

The softplay is called wacky warehouse. Which are attached to various different Greene Kings/Hungry Horses.

You wouldn’t have been eating at a softplay fgs
