To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

I would have thought the get together with your pals and the catch up was the main point of the evening? Surely what you eat is only secondary?

This is what I said. What a load of petulant people who have no idea how to nurture or enjoy their friendships.
She is hosting also, do any of the others ever host.
There's always people willing to go to others houses but never want to host

Fall out and you won't be enjoying any more evenings together at all.

pictoosh · 22/10/2026 18:46

Oooh annoying!

I'd probably go along with it for the sake of keeping the peace and not causing offence but I'd be quietly seething about it. Supermarket curries are not comparable. Naff.

Yes, we do all host. We take it in turns usually.

It's perfectly normal to want a catch up and good food.

I'm not disputing that they would want food.
I just dont see an issue with what the hostess has done tbh. But then I'd probably prefer a glass or two of wine and some savoury snacks to a curry any day if I was wanting to sit and chat to friends.

TFImBackIn · 22/10/2026 18:48

I wouldn't see a supermarket curry as a treat! I'd be really annoyed if I thought I was going to get a takeaway curry from a good place and ended up with a ready meal.

You haven't spoken to the others. You might be in the minority.
Surely you value your friendship and wouldn't want to fall out over something trivial.

ItWasThe80s · 22/10/2026 18:49

Ooh that would wind me up.

I don’t think I’d say anything but I’d mentally be planning to have a takeaway next weekend to make up for the lack of it and might stick a photo of it on the group chat in a passive aggressive fashion saying how yum it is

Twiglets1 · 22/10/2026 18:49

What a fuss about nothing.

Just enjoy the evening with your friends with no drama @Teriyt and have an Indian takeaway at home in a week or so if you're that desperate for one.

This.

Topseyt123 · 22/10/2026 18:50

That would annoy me. A supermarket ready meal wouldn't hit the spot.

I'd reply saying that I was looking forward to the takeaway from XXX restaurant as already discussed and that I would be ordering my own in.

Disturbia81 · 22/10/2026 18:50

They’re not bad, not as good as a takeaway but still taste good. Sounds like a big fuss over nothing.

Nofeckingway · 22/10/2026 18:51

No ! You could do that at home yourself . Tell her now so maybe if everyone agrees with you , she can freeze it . Or eat it herself.

Pippapotamus · 22/10/2026 18:51

Id be gutted and annoyed too. Id assume she was possibly skint but she should have run the decision past you all. There isnt usually a huge amount is there in supermarket curry packs so I think if the rest of you still want a takeaway order some tasty top ups or side dishes between you

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 22/10/2026 18:51

I wouldn't be happy because, even if the supermarket curries happened to be really good (doubtful, but let's say for the sake of argument, they're amazing) I would want to choose my own type of curry.

What's the betting that, if the selection contains more than one type of curry, there'll be one the OP's friends all want and one none of them want.

I'd be really tempted to message back and say "Thanks, but I'd prefer to choose my own curry so I'll order for myself tomorrow." The friend can put the spare one in the freezer.

Hyroplate · 22/10/2026 18:51

She's tried to do a nice thing and save you all some money. Or maybe she's feeling the pinch.

If she's got it wrong, friends would talk to each other about it.

Walkerzoo · 22/10/2026 18:52

So... You were going to buy your own takeaway, but now no takeaway and you have to pay for a meal deal which she has chosen....

Ohh I would be miffed.

IStillHearTheWaves · 22/10/2026 18:52

I'd be massively disappointed with that, but wouldn't say anything. I'd probably order the big, fat curry I'd been thinking about the next evening.

HoppityBun · 22/10/2026 18:53

I’d be annoyed but Waitrose and M&S are usually pretty good. It I definitely agree I’d prefer to choose my own, which was your original plan

MyArtfulGreySloth · 22/10/2026 18:54

Tell her you’ll pass on the meal deal and will pick up your takeaway en route to hers 😂

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:54

I obviously don’t know the ins and outs of her finances, but I don’t believe she’s doing too badly. It’s a c.£20 takeaway for crying out loud, who can’t afford that once in a while. The way her face rarely moves suggests she’s got plenty of disposable cash 😂(she’ll not mind me joking about that, it’s an in joke).

MrsKateColumbo · 22/10/2026 18:54

This would drive me mad, especially if there's different ones and someone has to have the reject one. If she was paying for it then fine but it's so rude to spend other people's money. I'd ask what there was and either say "yes ill have the x one" or "ill order my own as I prefer lamb"

Actually im feeling very cross about you missing out on a good curry 🤣🤣

ChaToilLeam · 22/10/2026 18:54

I'd be annoyed. If I were looking forward to a takeaway, I wouldn't want someone picking on my behalf from a supermarket selection. Some are okay but it's still not what I want. Hope she's not taking advantage of a 2-for-1 deal and not passing on the saving to you!

WearyAuldWumman · 22/10/2026 18:55

Similar happened to us for a family meal some years back. DH had paid for us all to go to a restaurant; for the reciprocal meal, the other family member had said that we'd get Chinese takeaway at hers.

Fine. We agreed.

Come the evening of the reciprocal meal, the family member had purchased Chinese meals from Morrison's - one between two. No, she wasn't hard up.

Doctordoolittle · 22/10/2026 18:55

I’d message back and say ‘I was really looking forward to the takeaway, so I will order my own thank you. But of course happy for you to cook your own.’
