To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

And? Are you trying to shame her for enjoying something in life? Not everyone enjoys a bland time, love.

An M&S ready meal with mates = bland
an Indian takeaway = party central!

God forbid we should actually enjoy anything in life!

“A shop bought dessert on its own is forgivable”

Just re read this again @AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer

Still don’t think you sound like a bit of a twat?

Nope - I think your Christmas sounds boring and it’s nice to make an effort when you’re hosting people on a special day 😊

Because I think that a shop bought cake is not something that needs anyone to “forgive” in any scenario

and a home made cake to you means that Christmas is “exciting”

a 💐 in that case for you

Tbf those supermarket packs are quite good. I doubt the op's friend was suggesting a cheapo frozen thing maybe those boxes where naans, bhajis etc all included.

Indian takeaways are very overrated. Tikka masala tastes the same if from a takeaway or a supermarket imo. Some of you seem to think high end chefs are dishing it up in takeaways Grin.

At least read the OP's posts. It wasn't one of the 'packs'. It was a basic Asda tikka masala and rice. No sides.

And you clearly live somewhere with terrible takeaways. But even if the quality is no better, a takeaway will almost always have larger portions if nothing else. And better naans. Even the worst takeaways I've had have far better bread than I've ever found in a supermarket.

We are howling in a seperate chat 😂😂

no words

Its hilarious isn't it, some being so very sniffy about supermarket fast food as opposed to 5 star takeaways Grin

Anyway let's op the op's poor friend has ditched those who howled rather unkindly in the separate group chat.

@sportsmum

surely a good time with friends is more fun and less bland than good food?

What’s wrong with having both?

@OrangeBlouse

well, that’s ideal!
But surely if you have to pick one or the other, vast majority of people would prefer good company over good food?

Say you'll order your own food, thanks.

Trying to get people to pay her for shitty ready meals is ridiculous.
To a previous poster, yes, food matters, of course. Most people like it and would look forward to a delicious planned meal.

I don't think it's right to go to someone's house and then order a takeaway for yourself! Either go and eat what's provided, or don't go and have a takeaway at home. The food isn't the main reason for meeting up.

No, because if the food is bad you won't have a good time.

People keep saying that the food isn't the main reason for meeting up, but if you meet for a meal, it kind of is.

But the only reason the OP would have to pick is because her friend moved the goalposts!

Granville82 · 25/10/2026 04:45

She's short of cash. Be nice, the evening is about spending time together not food. Get a takeaway another time.

If the host/friend genuinely can’t afford the takeaway then that’s different, and I’d probably bring other stuff to contribute to the evening. But if she’s just bought the supermarket food because she believes it’s the same as a takeaway then no, that would irritate the life out of me.

And yeah. If you’re meeting up for food then food is kind of important isn’t it? I once paid £22 for a salad in some godawful vegan salad place to meet a good friend and am still traumatised it. It wasn’t even a great salad 😅

Yeah, I’d be slightly annoyed but maybe she hasn’t got enough money to splurge on a takeaway, so she did the cheaper option

Its only her own she had to pay for.

what an awful way to treat a ‘friend’

MissingMeadow · 25/10/2026 12:14

I went out for breakfast this morning and I was looking forward to nice food and a catch up with my friend.

According to some people on this thread I should have just invited my friend over and handed her a bowl of cornflakes instead.
