To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

Teriyt · 22/10/2026 18:31

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

Well, you can believe me that I would be. I wouldn't express it as such, but I would cry off the event and I would make sure it didn't happen again.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be invited again.

I can eat vegan snacks, but not a full meal.

Why not?

RationallyAngry · 22/10/2026 19:31

Oh no! I'd be so gutted OP. Our local Indian takeaway is fantastic (and a bit pricey because it's so good), but it's the sort of thing I'd look forward to all week. If someone swapped it out for a supermarket ready meal at the last minute, I'd be so disappointed. There's just no comparison.

If this happened in my friend group, we're all close enough and have the sort of relationship where we could say 'what the fuck did you do that for? We've been waiting all week to have a Taj's. Stick it in the freezer and we'll order in as planned'.

BasaFillet · 22/10/2026 19:31

Wouldn't bother me massively. Takeaway is lovely but it does make me feel a bit gross after, so greasy! Me and husband actually prefer M&S Indian most of the time as it's way lighter and still very tasty. And he's Indian lol

If I really wanted that particular meal I'd say something like "oh I really did fancy the takeaway from X place.. I might still go ahead and order mine, hopefully you can freeze my supermarket one? I hope thats ok, I've just been craving the takeaway!"

I have a group of girlfriends and we meet regularly, occasionally I'm not really feeling the places they suggest but theres usually something I like on most menus. Sometimes one of them is dieting and prefers certain places because of that. It's more about spending time with my friends so I'm happy to go with the flow mostly.

Perhaps she's short of money x

She will have spent more on the supermarket versions for 4 than just paying for her own.

@Teriyt Is she expecting you and the others to pay her for this crap?

DeeNiall · 22/10/2026 19:31

@Nottodaybob Ok. I don't eat Chinese food. If I ate in a restaurant I'd probably just have rice and maybe plain veg. Not allergic but it would make me ill.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 22/10/2026 19:32

Please don’t reply saying you’ll order in (at her house) because, frankly, you’ll look ridiculous. She did something she thought was helpful and nice. I agree with you that it’s a massive disappointment but if they’re good friends then don’t be the person who sits there with your big take away when everyone else is just going with her plans.

JulietteRoche · 22/10/2026 19:32

BugJuice · 22/10/2026 19:31

Why not?

Because there is nothing in there that would constitute an actual meal. Why is that so hard to understand? I follow a fairly high protein diet as a rule, and vegan food just isn't it.

mintleavesandthyme · 22/10/2026 19:01

Sorry but I think you’re a horrible friend and just plain ungrateful. This might be a bit disappointing but maybe she can’t afford the takeaway. I’d be grateful for her hosting and being able to spend time with my friends. Maybe take a fun pudding over if you’re that bothered.

This is me too. When I am having a catch up with friends I don't care what we eat (or don't eat) happy to have crisps and snacks.

Catching up with my friends us what's important to me.

You are coming across very snobby OP.

If you actually read her replies, she has allergies to most legumes and soya.

Yes she said in the OP she is! Rude

This is all fine if agreed.

Its the changing of the plan without asking that’s really the issue

HughJarsed · 22/10/2026 19:33

When I am short of money and working hard, my Friday takeaway is a real treat I look forward to. It honestly keeps me going in the week. So it is a big deal to me and I budget for it.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 22/10/2026 19:33

I wasn't eating with dc running through the restaurant and noise travels.

It was a hideous place even with dc..

‘Suitable provision’ - sounds like a cracking Saturday night 😂

I was making an off hand comment re Tesco.

Is everyone so literal on here all the time?

Off hand comments and sarcasm don't really come over well in the written word. They come over as literal.

There’s more vegan food than legumes and soya.

If the host pulled stunts like that regularly, I wouldn't want to be! My father is a chef and I take food very, very seriously. I wouldn't dream of serving ready meal junk to my friends, I would think that very rude.

If food is more important to you than your friends, that's quite sad really.

OriginalUsername2 · 22/10/2026 19:35

I’d be gutted, but I don’t get takeaways often so it would be really exciting for me. Supermarket stuff doesn’t come close!

TheFishFish · 22/10/2026 19:35

PointyBirdsArePointyPointy · 22/10/2026 19:26

I am fuming on your behalf OP. If she had suggested that in the first place then fine - well, sort of fine. A supermarket curry is just not the same and I’d probably opt out of that anyway. I’d be telling her that as the plans have changed I’ll take a rain check —and stay at home with a takeaway—

With that sort of attitude towards people I imagine you dont get many invitations anyway.

Imagine binning off an evening with friends over such a petty thing.
