To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

OP posts:

"I'm just not keen on supermarket curries so I'll sort myself out and eat before I arrive"

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 22/10/2026 19:13

Nah I’d be having my take away one way or another. It’s not the same. Having been skint most of my life I would actually like to enjoy my spoils. Even if she is skint, it’s not fair to inflict it on others and I say that as a former skint person.

FlippingGiraffe · 22/10/2026 19:13

YANBU… same vibes as hoose rice! 😂

Moonnstarz · 22/10/2026 19:13

I can only assume she went for this as a cheaper option and didn't want to say openly she couldn't afford takeaway.
Though I still think she should have said something...money is a bit tight til pay day, I am going to Tesco later and thinking of picking up their Indian meal deal, what do you all think?

I’d reply ‘ I was really looking forward to ….(name of place you initially chose).’ Id prefer to stick to that.’ And see where it goes. I’m sure the rest feel the same way. She’ll learn she can’t make unilateral decisions for a group

This is what I would do/say.

Suggest she freezes it for another day and that you want to order from the takeaway as planned.

I’m going for an Indian takeaway with two friends tomorrow night as well and wondered for a moment if this was one of them 😂😂.

This is devastating, and the poster who thinks m and s is similar must never have had proper curry.

Devastating is a bit strong, I think. I agree that an M&S Indian takeaway boxed curry selection, is not on a par, with a 'proper curry'.

Bexisdaft · 22/10/2026 19:14

Sometimes Mumsnet is like another world to me. The thought of starting a thread about a close friend who was hosting me for dinner basically inviting people to call her a CF…. Alien to me

Yes, it does. There's always one, isn't there? OP, I'd actually cry off.

Really?
Sorry that is just so petulant: if you cant have what you want you will stay home and sulk instead?

mintleavesandthyme · 22/10/2026 19:01

Sorry but I think you’re a horrible friend and just plain ungrateful. This might be a bit disappointing but maybe she can’t afford the takeaway. I’d be grateful for her hosting and being able to spend time with my friends. Maybe take a fun pudding over if you’re that bothered.

But OP is being asked to pay for a supermarket curry she doesn't want.

If the friend was paying for everyone's meals, this would be a completely different AIBU and I think OP would get a resounding YABU. Most of us would happily eat whatever we were given barring allergies etc. if we weren't being asked to pay for it.

Cora0 · 22/10/2026 19:17

I think I’d just say “Oh no thanks, I really fancy [name of place] so I’m still going to order that.”

I don’t like ready meals and I’d be annoyed that she was changing things around without a care for what we’d all already agreed upon. Especially if getting together and ordering takeaway is the norm for the group.

TheCoolHare · 22/10/2026 19:18

No problem for me. M&S curries are fine. At least they’ll be hot.

I may be in a massive minority but I think takeaways are overrated. They arrive cold or lukewarm at best, cost a bomb, swim in grease, come with a load of packaging that needs binning and give massive indigestion and then dehydration headaches.

I’d genuinely rather cook than have a takeaway.

I think this is what some people are missing.....OPs friend may be hosting but she's not paying! Everyone will be paying for their own share.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/10/2026 19:18

I'd be tempted to just say that I'll order my own. She can always cook enough for her and freeze some for another time.

Wewillmeetagainoneday · 22/10/2026 19:18

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 19:12

I’d be annoyed because my choice is effectively taken away. I’m veggie so always order a paneer curry, often off-menu. Bet she wouldn’t have bought anything comparable down ole tescos

Presumably your friend would know you are vegetarian and would make suitable provision for that?
OP doesnt say the food is from Tesco as far as i can see.

Supermarket takeaways are rank. They just have this weird undertaste and always make me feel a bit ill. I'd be livid if someone just decided that they were going to have that instead of an actual takeaway. I would say I was ill, which wouldn't entirely be a lie, as if I ate one I would genuinely feel unwell.

You obviously only go to very bad takeaways

tripleginandtonic · 22/10/2026 19:19

I think yabu, it's the get together thats important surely?

SuperSharpShooter · 22/10/2026 19:19

DeeNiall · 22/10/2026 18:56

Block her and go no contact.

😂
I could hardly contain my rage once when were invited to a friend's for Sunday Dinner only to be served homemade curry and boiled rice.
I mean, who fucking does that!

Im annoyed on your behalf OP supermarket curry is what yiu have when you can't be arsed to cook and just need a feed.
Outrageous 😆

Nottodaybob · 22/10/2026 19:20

Id be really annoyed as well. We rarely have take aways and I'd have been looking forward to it. I also never eat ready meals.

To me, this is like arranging to go to the local independent restaurant and her turning around saying she's booked Bella Italia.

I wouldn't pick up my own takeaway and wouldn't say anything but I'd not be happy and if it happened again I'd say something.

Which involves food. If food is so unimportant, don't make it part of the event. I have vegan friends whom I never meet for meals as I can't eat vegan food. That isn't a problem. Bad food, however, is.

momtoboys · 22/10/2026 19:22

I would be livid. What a disappointment!

BugJuice · 22/10/2026 19:23

Askandyforcompo · 22/10/2026 18:36

It depends where from. M and S is probably better than some takeaways.

Really? I haven’t had supermarket Indian ready meals before but we got the expensive ones from M&S a couple of weeks ago and it was awful! Nothing like a good Indian restaurant.

JoshLymanSwagger · 22/10/2026 19:23

@Teriyt what do you normally order? If that's not what she's got, I'd tell her to stick her "bargain purchase" in the freezer and you'll all carry on as normal and order something hot to be delivered.

MysteryParcel · 22/10/2026 19:23

ThisCraftyAquaHedgehog · 22/10/2026 18:57

Sounds way more sensible to me.
Waitrose and M&S are fantastic, Tesco is great as well.

And surely it's about alcohol and friends more than the food?

As a person of Indian origin I’m honestly surprised you think any of these are “fantastic” or “great” to be honest, they’re no better than a “bad” takeaway in my opinion.

‘Suitable provision’ - sounds like a cracking Saturday night 😂

I was making an off hand comment re Tesco.

Is everyone so literal on here all the time?
