To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

I wouldn't be happy because, even if the supermarket curries happened to be really good (doubtful, but let's say for the sake of argument, they're amazing) I would want to choose my own type of curry.

What's the betting that, if the selection contains more than one type of curry, there'll be one the OP's friends all want and one none of them want.

I'd be really tempted to message back and say "Thanks, but I'd prefer to choose my own curry so I'll order for myself tomorrow." The friend can put the spare one in the freezer.

My friend has asked what curries they are so I’ll find out soon hopefully!

I'd reply,
"That sounds lovely, I'll pop by the (takeaway) and pick up a few bits to contribute"

DeeNiall · 22/10/2026 18:56

Block her and go no contact.

OrangeFlower14 · 22/10/2026 18:57

@Teriyt “It’s a c.£20 takeaway for crying out loud, who can’t afford that once in a while.”

quite a lot of people.

Anyway, you’re supposed to have a nice evening with your friend. I didn’t really think it was about the takeaway.

I obviously don’t know the ins and outs of her finances, but I don’t believe she’s doing too badly. It’s a c.£20 takeaway for crying out loud, who can’t afford that once in a while. The way her face rarely moves suggests she’s got plenty of disposable cash 😂(she’ll not mind me joking about that, it’s an in joke).

Even if she is hard up, she should have run this idea past you all.

Some compromise could have been reached where those who wanted had a supermarket curry, those who wanted a takeaway had a takeaway curry and you shared some sides from both supermarket deal and takeaway.

ThisCraftyAquaHedgehog · 22/10/2026 18:57

Sounds way more sensible to me.
Waitrose and M&S are fantastic, Tesco is great as well.

And surely it's about alcohol and friends more than the food?

Middlemarch123 · 22/10/2026 18:57

Tell her you’re doing a Smithy, order your own (don’t forget the Sag Aloo) and you’ll eat it in the car😉

ProfMummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 22/10/2026 18:58

"That sounds lovely, I'll pop by the (takeaway) and pick up a few bits to contribute"

Good idea but when OP arrives with all the nicer bits what's the betting everyone will snaffle them up first 😂

DontBotherJustChooseYourself · 22/10/2026 19:00

If she's strapped for cash, she could have just bought her own ready meal whilst you and the other friends order the takeaway, so this argument doesn't fly with me.

I'd be messaging, "Oh, you can pop the one you got me in your freezer and have it yourself at a later date; I'm really looking forward to the takeaway!"

CapeMylar · 22/10/2026 19:01

I’d be annoyed about this as I really don’t like pre-made curries. It wouldn’t just be a downgrade from a treat but something I actively wouldn’t want to eat. She should have checked before buying stuff in.

mintleavesandthyme · 22/10/2026 19:01

Sorry but I think you’re a horrible friend and just plain ungrateful. This might be a bit disappointing but maybe she can’t afford the takeaway. I’d be grateful for her hosting and being able to spend time with my friends. Maybe take a fun pudding over if you’re that bothered.

Schoolchoicesucks · 22/10/2026 19:01

Yeah, I'd be a bit disappointed. But go for the company. And host at mine next time (with proper takeaway).

weirdoexincident · 22/10/2026 19:01

I’d message her back, and say you’ve been looking at the menu and had really been looking forward to xyz, so ‘Does anyone have any objection if I order that myself, along with anything anyone else really fancies?’
It isn’t a rejection of her helpful idea, but you get what you prefer.

DiscoCherries · 22/10/2026 19:03

This is just not a hill I’d die on. Go and enjoy your night with your friends.

EmbracingUncertainty · 22/10/2026 19:04

I’d be disappointed but not enough to kick off about it

Hmm, even the very best supermarket curry I've ever had isn't as good as an averagely-decent takeaway one. Plus you get lots of interesting house specialities if it's a good takeaway, usually the regional cuisine that reflects the heritage of the chef or owners, things you simply don't find in the supermarket which are always the bog standard tikka, madras, korma, jalfrezi, balti, roghan jhosh and if you're lucky you might find a vindaloo.

JulietteRoche · 22/10/2026 19:04

Netcurtainnelly · 22/10/2026 18:38

Does it matter. Surely your looking forward to get together regardless of the food

Yes, it does. There's always one, isn't there? OP, I'd actually cry off.

She doesn't have to pay for all of it, though?

Gothwife · 22/10/2026 19:08

Are you friends and not best friends? If any of my friends did that I’d just tell them I want a proper takeaway but we have that kind of relationship. I do think I’d still probably just say you would prefer a takeaway as uiu e already picked what you’d like from the menu. It was daft not ask people first when changing their plans.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 22/10/2026 19:08

Ah sorry mate I'd set my idea on x meal from x place..
And take your own.

WaneyEdge · 22/10/2026 19:10

Supermarket curries are nothing like the food from a takeaway! The M&S ones always taste of the plastic trays and have next to no flavour. Can’t imagine others are much different; been a while as I refuse to buy them. I’d be gutted and would bring my own. It’s rude to just decide what everyone else will eat.

But she's not paying for OP- she wants OP to pay her part.
@Teriyt My friends know I'm a picky eater- I love food and eating but it really depends on what. I would have told friend that "sorry I can't eat that because I got really sick last time so obviously won't be able to even look at it. I will just get a takeout."

But.. If I wasn't paying, like if I was invited I would shut up and eat anything because I'm polite. Since you're paying no need to let her decide what you buy.

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 22/10/2026 19:12

I would also point out that supermarket naan bread is utterly pathetic.

theworsttime · 22/10/2026 19:12

Wewillmeetagainoneday · 22/10/2026 18:47

I'm not disputing that they would want food.
I just dont see an issue with what the hostess has done tbh. But then I'd probably prefer a glass or two of wine and some savoury snacks to a curry any day if I was wanting to sit and chat to friends.

Edited

I’d be annoyed because my choice is effectively taken away. I’m veggie so always order a paneer curry, often off-menu. Bet she wouldn’t have bought anything comparable down ole tescos

PinkyFlamingo · 22/10/2026 19:12

This should have been something that was discussed with everyone is the point!
