To be a bit miffed at my friend’s idea of a ‘takeaway night’ tomorrow

My friend is kindly hosting a night for me and two others, a girly catch up.

When suggested we agreed on getting a takeaway and consensus from earlier this week was to get an Indian, and we earmarked the specific takeaway we’d order from.

My friend hosting has messaged to say she has picked up a ‘deal‘ from the supermarket this afternoon so she has got some ready meal curries and sides and said we can sort the money out on the night.

First world problem I know, but a supermarket ready meal doesn’t really hit the spot compared to a proper Indian takeaway so I feel a bit annoyed! She didn’t check with us before.

Suit yourselves - everyone I know has a starter even if it’s just something like melon and Parma ham. Otherwise you’re waiting until quite late in the day to eat. Even my otherwise very low key in laws do a starter!

That's just the people you know. Everyone does Christmas differently. None of my family do starters, and we all prefer to eat at around lunchtime rather than late afternoon.

ladyrushford · 24/10/2026 17:12

I am quite food orientated and if someone invited me over for a curry I’d expect a curry! I actually think it’s rather presumptuous to assume I’d would happily pay for a supermarket microwave meal in place of a decent meal and at my grand old age I’d tell the truth and say ‘I was looking forward to the curry and don’t particularly enjoy those meals. Would you mind if we continued with our original plan?’ And if not, I’d likely pull out.

I don’t understand the other friend’s thinking? It’s a bit a liberty.

pictoosh · 24/10/2026 17:14

We don't don't serve a starter at Christmas either. With the main meal, dessert, cake, cheese and chocolate all day, it's simply not needed.

But the person I was referring to didn’t have cheese or chocolate either! It’s not about the starter or the shop bought dessert, it’s about the combination of all of it making for a meagre time

LizzieW1969 · 24/10/2026 17:18

Re the OP, I wouldn’t like to be offered an Asda curry either. Though the issue would really be that I wasn’t given a choice.

I would also have the problem that I’ve got food intolerances so wouldn’t be able to eat ready meal curries anyway. I have to choose carefully what I eat.

Aye fair enough. It's nice to make it special. Xx

I’d reply ‘ I was really looking forward to ….(name of place you initially chose).’ Id prefer to stick to that.’ And see where it goes. I’m sure the rest feel the same way. She’ll learn she can’t make unilateral decisions for a group

This. It was rude to make this decision on behalf of group without any discussion. I'd text back I'm not keen on supermarket takeaway food so I'll stick to ordering from Indian thank you.

youre VERY food orientated to pull out of time with friends because the food isn’t to your liking!

Tbf those supermarket packs are quite good. I doubt the op's friend was suggesting a cheapo frozen thing maybe those boxes where naans, bhajis etc all included.

Indian takeaways are very overrated. Tikka masala tastes the same if from a takeaway or a supermarket imo. Some of you seem to think high end chefs are dishing it up in takeaways Grin.

dont talk shite. Indian takeaway tastes completely different to supermarket ready meals. Unless you’ve only had a really shite takeaway! Also the friend obviously WAS suggesting cheapo shitty ones as it was an Asda basic range micro meal.

I mentioned a similar situation in a pp. The lack of choice was and issue for us, in that we'd expected to be able to choose a meal and finished up having to eat half a Morrison's ready meal that we didn't particularly like.

The host was someone who always had a full meal whenever we paid and went round several times when we paid for everyone to have a three course meal at a Chinese buffet.

Agreed. My mum says shite like that, her taste buds are broken 🤣

They really don't, some of you seem to be confusing a takeaway with a restaurant. I know a lot of people enjoy a takeaway/junk food but they are not the top quality some seem to be professing.

Takeaways same 'shite' as supermarket packs.

No one is confused, you can get takeaways from restaurants,

Yes most Indian “take aways” are in fact restaurants anyway!

I’m not confused. Im also not claiming that Indian takeaway is healthy, but it’s delicious and fuck all like a shit Asda ready meal! A takeaway is a huge treat a ready meal would be a last resort coz I’ve finished work late and don’t have time to cook at 10pm.

Duchess379 · 24/10/2026 18:20

Yeah, I’d be slightly annoyed but maybe she hasn’t got enough money to splurge on a takeaway, so she did the cheaper option

Spotsmum · 24/10/2026 18:23

Netcurtainnelly · 22/10/2026 18:50

This.

What a useless addition!

A crap supermarket ready meal is depressing. Part of the joy of being with friends is indulging yourself, not trying the Tesco 2 for 1 offer.

Im shaming her for troughing down on a meal her skint friend couldn't afford. Who actually does that 😂

OrangeBlouse · 24/10/2026 18:36

But it’s entirely your assumption that her friend couldn’t afford it.

Mumofyellows · 24/10/2026 19:01

owlpassport · 22/10/2026 18:38

Just say 'oh thanks but I'm looking forward to a takeaway from xyz so I'll order in, but if you'd prefer to cook that's fine!'. I know she's hosting and it's a little rude, but not as rude as buying supermarket food and expecting you to pay for it.

This!

It was the cumulation! A shop bought desert on its own is forgivable. But in combination with no starters, nibbles or proper Christmas dinner it comes across as miserly

“A shop bought dessert on its own is forgivable”

Just re read this again @AllIwantForChrismasIsAKitchenAidStandMixer

Still don’t think you sound like a bit of a twat?

Ah what a disappointment.
