Since the Manchester attack, I, on the other hand, am even more out and proud.
There are so few of us that many people go through life thinking that they have never met a Jewish person. We are something…else…a bit weird…different…unknown strangers. Many people think about things like the attacks, “Oh, well, it couldn’t happen here. There aren’t any Jews here. And anyway, we’re not like that. It couldn’t happen here.”
I want people to understand that Jewish people are no different to them. We are ordinary. We are your neighbours, your colleagues, your friends. We are nurses and doctors and firefighters and plumbers. Yes, it could happen here. Yes, hatred and violence could happen in your community.
Hatred and violence towards one group is entryism for hatred and violence towards others.
Do not be complacent just because you don’t think that there are any Jewish people in your community.
