Hi Guys.
Just wondering where I went wrong in life, the outside looks perfect, house, 2 cars, kids, dog, good jobs etc ....

If life was a box, are you

(A) In the box looking outside the box

(B) Outside the box looking in the box

(C) There isn't option C, you are either of the options above

At 40 years old my epitome is, I have been living as an option A, however, I think I am an option B

YANBU = Clarity
YABU = Delusions / Menopause

Did you mean epiphany?

catdistributionsystem · 14/10/2026 14:00

Huh?

Comeonbabygrillmycheeseburger · 14/10/2026 14:00

If life is the box and you’re outside the box, wouldn’t that mean you’re dead?

Sillycally · 14/10/2026 14:03

Yes, that's what I meant, obviously you understood and thank you for correcting 😀

Which are you? I would guess B?? 😂

Epitome? Do you need to look the word up? I’m not sure what your title means at all

loratadine · 14/10/2026 14:06

My vote is option D, you bought a bottle of Baileys at the weekend to put away for Christmas, but you got bored and opened it today and had it for lunch.

DearlyDiego · 14/10/2026 14:07

I don't understand the question, or what your epiphany is.

If I try to deconstruct it, do you mean
A) living for how others perceive you(r) happiness/success?
B) You are genuinely happy/successful and don't care what external people think about it?

Not sure what you mean by outside the box looking in etc but at age 40, if I were to objectively view my life, I’d think I’m doing reasonably well. Husband that I get along with, who is a hands on parent and whose parenting style complements mine. No debt. mortgage paid off. But not perfect either — I’d like to build a bigger pension and save more (I refuse to rely entirely on my inheritance), and I’d like to upgrade from a flat to a house.

Ultimately I’m grateful for what I have so far while also aiming for improvement.

Wotsupmog · 14/10/2026 14:10

Could you say more about the box?

DeftGoldHedgehog · 14/10/2026 14:11

I don't quite get your meaning, do you mean everything seems perfect on the surface but isn't?

QiBengong · 14/10/2026 14:15

Are you off your box OP?

I don't want to unpack this at all, let it remain a mystery.
Its never good to box oneself in, much better to box clever
Its either Schrodinger's box or Pandora's box
Either way, there is a certainty of bad stuff and a scraping of hope

Matzochist · 14/10/2026 14:22

Outside the box mostly, but the good job didn't arrive with the rest of my order. The mental health leaked out of the corner somewhere along the way. Oh, and I exchanged the dog for some guinea pigs.

Definitely a lot of option "A" this afternoon 😂

Schrodinger may have a view on (C)

KittyAndPatch · 14/10/2026 14:30

Who cares about how perfect your life looks to other people? Why does a dog add to the perfect family image?

FancyKitten · 14/10/2026 14:31

Have you be just been to a work motivational thingy? Sounds a bit like that…

Fiftyandme · 14/10/2026 14:31

You are incredibly unreasonable to have an epitome

TrappedByThisDesk · 14/10/2026 14:32

If the box is life, I am in the box looking around inside the box.

Well, I read the title as 'episiotomy', which made me even more confused than others on this thread.

@QiBengong

Wow, that is a class response.

I've never heard of the Schrodinger's cat, you are clearly very intelligent😊

I suppose I am metaphorically speaking within my AIBU

The "box" is your mentality, and the A or B options are how YOU conform to societal expectations.

For example....

It’s a big box of pinot Grigio from the sounds of it!

Bigtrapeze · 14/10/2026 14:48

I'm not completely sure that you mean an epiphany either, OP. They don't normally come with a multiple choice answer option. I've ruled out episiotomy but part of my brain is trying to work out what you meant as I am intrigued.

In terms of trying to answer your question, I'm pretty content with my box when viewed from inside or outside, and I don't mind what others think about it.

Surely OP is too cheerful for it to be that, although might have been treated to some good drugs during labour perhaps...
