AIBU to have an an epiphany at 40 years old

Hi Guys.
Just wondering where I went wrong in life, the outside looks perfect, house, 2 cars, kids, dog, good jobs etc ....

If life was a box, are you

(A) In the box looking outside the box

(B) Outside the box looking in the box

(C) There isn't option C, you are either of the options above

At 40 years old my epitome is, I have been living as an option A, however, I think I am an option B

YANBU = Clarity
YABU = Delusions / Menopause

Is this a case of box wine?

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 14/10/2026 16:01

I think I’m out of my box. No idea what this is about at all.

Could somebody please close the lid?

outerspacepotato · 14/10/2026 16:01

Double

SerendipityCat · 14/10/2026 16:04

There was a duplicate thread, now deleted, where the replies were a little more …robust, and Sillycally’s responses even more gnomic. I think it’s wine o’clock wherever she is, and it’s given her the false impression that she’s making sense.

GoodLordMother · 14/10/2026 16:04

Doesn't an epiphany normally involve clarity and therefore a freedom from worries/fears/confusion/decision making?!

What on earth are you talking about OP? What are you doing with all these boxes? Was it in fact a box of wine you got stuck in?

Dragonscaledaisy · 14/10/2026 16:04

godmum56 · 14/10/2026 14:55

for me life is and always has been option c

There is no box.

Same here. The OP's description of their life is far from my ideal of 'perfect' at 40.

Whatshitnow · 14/10/2026 16:05

Need more clarity regarding the boxes, OP.

I'm guessing you mean something like "are you participating fully in your life or do you feel like you're watching life pass you by"

But I could be wrong. I'm a very amateur psychologist. Not my area at all.

Do like a box of Malbec myself. Those boxes I do like. 🍷

JuliaAgrippina · 14/10/2026 16:10

An epiphany is a sudden, striking realization or intuitive insight that allows a person to understand a problem, situation, or concept from a new and deeper perspective - they do not tend to involve muliple choice or boxes

IME boxes choices are for cats.

I've been ruptured!

Ruptured* *means to burst, break, or tear open suddenly, usually under physical pressure or stress - do you mean rumbled meaing discovered?

Is this I have a house two kids is there more to life moment - cause that's probably just middle age.

I wanted kids cats and a house and have them - I think other things like to live on the moon and to be an international spy/world renounce nobel prizing winning scientist were always going to be out of reach really. Not sure where that leaves me with your box choices.

Schrödinger's midlife crisis is always a fun time.

ThatCyanCat · 14/10/2026 16:14

Is it a box of frogs?

My vote is option D, you bought a bottle of Baileys at the weekend to put away for Christmas, but you got bored and opened it today and had it for lunch.

I was going to say the same, except I suspected that cooking sherry was involved.

theemmadilemma · 14/10/2026 16:18

Not so much with the words today are you OP?

MakeThatMakeSense · 14/10/2026 16:18

I'm outside and inside the box all at once, and yet I am nowhere at all...

BoredZelda · 14/10/2026 16:19

Comeonbabygrillmycheeseburger · 14/10/2026 14:00

If life is the box and you’re outside the box, wouldn’t that mean you’re dead?

Surely once you are dead you are in the box?

wishingonastar101 · 14/10/2026 16:19

Dry itchy box over here...

You are incredibly unreasonable to have an epitome

Yeah, I want one now.

Little boxes,
On the hillside,
Little boxes,
Made of ticky-tacky

EmpressaurusKitty · 14/10/2026 16:21

My epiphany at 40 was that if I didn’t get divorced NOW I could spend all my life trapped in a box.

So I did & built the life I wanted instead.

Well, I read the title as 'episiotomy', which made me even more confused than others on this thread.

😅😅😅

God I hate that song. Not just because musically it's crap, but because if she objected to cheap identikit housing, it should be because she's angry about commodifying a human need like housing. Instead she decided that if people live in identical houses (likely without much choice) then they must also be identical people. What a thing to judge people on.

Did you go badly wrong in life, it sounds pretty OK or are you having a midlife crisis and wish you had gone to live on a beach in Thailand as a teenager and never come back.

CarpetSlipper · 14/10/2026 16:34

Life isn’t a box.
